Activating Bedtime Mode on Android Devices
Setting up Bedtime Mode is relatively straightforward. Here’s how I did it on my Android phone.
- Open your Settings: The first step is to navigate to your device’s Settings. This can usually be done by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping on the gear icon.
- Access Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls: From your Settings menu, scroll down until you find the option for Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls, and tap on it.
- Select Bedtime Mode: Within the Digital Wellbeing menu, you’ll find an option for Bedtime Mode. Tap on it.
- Set up your Preferences: At this point, you’ll see a few options. You can choose to enable or disable Do Not Disturb during Bedtime Mode. I recommend keeping it enabled to block notifications and calls.
- Specify your Schedule: Next, set a schedule for when Bedtime Mode should be activated. You can set a start and end time and choose the days of the week when it should be active. Alternatively, you can select the ‘Turn on while charging‘ option to activate Bedtime Mode when your device is charging during a specific time range.
- Save your Settings: Once you’re satisfied with your settings, tap ‘Done‘ to save them.
Customizing Your Bedtime Mode
Bedtime Mode is not a one-size-fits-all feature. It allows you to tailor it to your specific needs. Here’s how I customized mine.
- Return to Bedtime Mode Settings: If you’ve already set up Bedtime Mode, you can return to its settings by navigating to Settings > Digital Wellbeing & Parental Controls > Bedtime Mode.
- Customize Screen Options: Under the Customize section, tap on ‘Screen options at bedtime.’ Here, you can choose to enable or disable different options like grayscale, dark theme, and dimmed wallpaper.
- Set up Wake-up Options: You can also set up wake-up options in the Clock app. Go to the Clock app, tap on Bedtime, and then choose ‘Get started.’ You can set up a wake-up alarm, select the days for the alarm, and even choose a Sunrise Alarm for a gentler wake-up experience. Changes made here will also reflect in the main settings menu.

Using Bedtime Mode with Quick Settings
You might find yourself wanting to activate Bedtime Mode outside of your preset schedule, maybe on a particularly busy day when you want to ensure a good night’s sleep. The Quick Settings menu provides a fast way to do this.
- Swipe down from your screen with two fingers to open the Quick Settings menu.
- Look for a tile called ‘Bedtime Mode‘ or ‘Sleep Mode,’ and tap on it to activate the feature.
Advanced Features of Bedtime Mode
A significant advantage of Bedtime Mode is its integration with other features on your Android device, providing a more comprehensive solution for managing your digital wellbeing.
For instance, apart from blocking notifications, Bedtime Mode can be set to activate other features like a battery saver mode or enabling certain accessibility features.
Moreover, if you use a smartwatch, you can sync its sleep mode with your phone’s, ensuring that both devices minimize distractions during your sleep.
