HarmonyOS can replace Android OS on its smartphones “any time,” but that it will stick to Google’s platform
23rd July 2019, [UPDATE]
Huawei’s upcoming OS won’t be competing with Android and won’t replace any mobile operating system anytime soon. Rather , it would enter as an operating system for their official Televisions powered by this very new OS.
LATEST IN THE NEWS:
It is reported that it will be called ‘HongMeng OS’ for China market and ‘Harmony OS’ for the global market. HUAWEI Harmony OS will go official in August or September this year.
Asked by Le Point whether HongMeng would be faster than Android and iOS, Ren actually said that Huawei “hasn’t done a comparison yet,” adding “but it’s likely.”
Ren also said that “HongMeng is not designed for phones as everyone thinks. We didn’t develop the OS to replace Google—and if Google does withdraw its OS from Huawei, we will need to start building an ecosystem because we don’t have a clear plan yet.”
OS had been designed to run on networking equipment, not smartphones, and the low latency is needed to enable IoT processing to take place in industrial applications and autonomous vehicles, for example.
Harmony OS doesn’t have an ecosystem built around it. It’s just a technical system for operating networks. And so “it will take many years” to build an ecosystem that comes close to replicating that.
With its 5ms latency, it’s suited to IOT environments or you can take examples such as autonomous cars where information, commands, and responses need to flow quickly. It was originally designed to ensure telecommunications networks ran properly
