The OnePlus 8 is now receiving its last major Android update

The OnePlus 9 series received the flawed OxygenOS 12 firmware for the first day of its release. Even after that firmware was patched, it was riddled with bugs. The OnePlus 8 series received the stable OxygenOS 12 update in March 2022, six months after Google seeded the OS. In comparison, the OnePlus 8 series received the stable Android 13 firmware three months after its release. It appears OnePlus has taken steps to improve its OS update pace on its phones.

In the first week of November, OxygenOS 13 was released for the OnePlus 9 series. Now, it is the turn of the entire 2020 product portfolio consisting of the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and the OnePlus 8T to receive the latest Android build. OnePlus announced that the update will be released at a later date, but the stable firmware is already making its way to OnePlus 8 users.

Screenshots posted by Redditors and OnePlus forum users on XDA show that the OxygenOS 13 firmware is available for download on OnePlus and Reddit user accounts (via XDA). Additionally, OxygenOS 13 has been spotted on the OnePlus 9R, 9RT, and the OnePlus 10R. As of now, only the OnePlus 10R has been confirmed for an update. A release note for other phones should be out soon.

OxygenOS 12 introduces smoother system animations for better performance, in addition to Aquamorphic design. More customization options for Always-On Display, Sidebar Toolbox, enhanced Shelf experience, updated system icon theme, and a new Home screen world clock widget are among the new features. The OnePlus 8 series came with Android 10, so OnePlus is the last major OS update. All OnePlus phones will now receive security patches for one year.

Following Samsung, OnePlus is the only other company to have so quickly rolled out Android 13 to several of its leading phones released in the last couple of years. After the disastrous OxygenOS 12 rollout in 2021, OnePlus seems to have corrected its error.

When the OnePlus 9 series was first released, the OxygenOS 12 firmware was so poorly constructed that it was pulled immediately. Even the builds that followed were riddled with bugs. The OnePlus 8 series received the stable OxygenOS 12 update in March 2022, over six months after Google had seeded the OS. The OnePlus 7 series was the first to receive the stable Android 13 update three months after its release. The OnePlus 7 has been providing frequent OS enhancements for a while now, and it appears like the company has finally fulfilled its promise of releasing more timely software upgrades to its gadgets.
