Dewars Farm Quarry is home to the largest collection of dinosaur footprints in the UK, with hundreds of tracks scattered across the site.
Discovered by a Quarry Worker
A big discovery often starts small—Gary Johnson, a quarry worker, felt some unusual bumps on the quarry floor and stumbled upon something historic!
Tracks of Jurassic Giant
The footprints belonged to Megalosaurus, a massive 30-foot-long predator, and Cetiosaurus, a giant 18-meter-long plant-eater.
Dinosaurs Walked at a Human Pace
Surprisingly, the dinosaurs that left these tracks walked at about 3 mph—the same pace as an average human stroll.
Incredible Footprint Detail
These footprints were so well-preserved that scientists could even see how the mud squished under the dinosaurs' feet as they walked.
Perfect Conditions for Preservation
The tracks stayed intact because the mud was just right—not too wet, not too dry. Before the weather could ruin them, a storm buried them and locked them in time.
Drones and 3D Tech in Action
Scientists didn’t just dig—they used drones and 3D cameras to scan and create detailed digital models of the footprints.
More Fossils Found
Alongside the dinosaur footprints, researchers found fossilized burrows, shells, and plant remains—offering a glimpse into the lush ancient world these giants roamed.
