A Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman acknowledged an explosion at 5601 W. West End Ave.

At least eight persons were taken to hospitals by 10 ambulances.

One male was in serious-to-critical condition and the other was fair-to-serious.

A woman was hospitalized in fair to serious condition. One man was in serious-to-critical condition and the other was fair-to-serious.

Deputy Fire Commissioner Marc Ferman said one victim was across the street.

The Fire Department had to shore up the building during an ongoing search around 11:15 a.m. Ferman claimed everyone had left the building.

At least one unit's roof fell, and other windows were blown out.
