Stimulus update: $3,200 one-time payments must be claimed before deadline in four days

Millions of people remain eligible to receive COVID-19 stimulus payments that would be worth a combined $3,200. But the deadline to file a simplified tax return is quickly approaching.

The deadline for individual filers with little or no income to file a simplified tax return and check their eligibility for unclaimed payments or child tax credits is on Tuesday.

Income of less than $75,000 or joint filers who made less than $150,000 qualified for 3 stimulus checks. Those who do not file income taxes have until Tuesday to fill out simplified forms to claim it.

Families with children are also eligible for the child tax credit, which seeks to reduce financial and food insecurity. The credits benefited about 84% of children from July to December 2021.

Congress approved $931 billion worth of stimulus checks as part of economic relief plans during the coronavirus pandemic for nearly 165 million people in 2020 and 2021.

The sum was approved in 3 waves, two of which were signed into law by then-President Donald Trump in 2020, and a third COVID-19 stimulus bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021.
