WhatsApp working on the new disappearing images feature

Facebook-owned, the most popular messaging application, WhatsApp is likely to launch a new self destructing images update.

Disappearing images

After creating a dilemma whether to use WhatsApp or not in India because of the new privacy policy of WhatsApp, the app is working on a new feature where the images would be self destructed for both, the sender and the receiver once they leave the chat. According to WABetaInfo as posted on Twitter, WhatsApp will add a new toggle button next to the text box in the image preview (while sending images) window. Tapping the toggle button will show a pop-up saying, “This media will disappear once you leave this chat.” and then the self-destructing images will disappear as soon as the user leaves a chat. Those receiving the media will also be notified about the incoming media and a notification saying it would disappear soon. It is also said that WhatsApp would not allow users to export these images which means you can’t save these photos in your gallery or copy them to another app.

However, there is a catch in this, even though WhatsApp would not allow the users to export these disappearing images, a user can take a screenshot of these images and share them further without notifying the sender about a screenshot being taken. This could mean that WhatsApp is trying to upgrade the privacy but with loopholes in it. A lot of people have switched to Telegram and are considering switching to safer mediums of instant messaging which would not breach their privacy, post-WhatsApp’s Privacy Policy issues in India. This could be a step taken by WhatsApp to show their users about the company updating their privacy and trying to make it secure for its users, yet with loopholes to look out for in their updates
