Nine settings worth changing the day it lands. The last one keeps an encrypted log of anyone who tries to break into your phone.
Long-press an app icon on the home screen or in the app drawer and pick Bubble. It opens in a floating window over whatever you are doing. Five bubbles max.
Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen, then turn on Widgets on lock screen. Swipe in from the right edge to reach them. Three standard widgets fit per page.
Settings > Display & touch > Dark theme. Android 17 lets you exclude individual apps, so the one that looks broken in dark mode can stay light.
Settings > Display & touch > Enhanced HDR brightness. It is on by default. Drag the intensity slider down and HDR clips stop searing your eyes at night.
Material 3 blurs backgrounds everywhere and text readability pays for it. Settings > Accessibility > Color & motion > Reduce blur effects turns it off instantly.
Pull down Quick Settings and tap Screen recorder. Android 17 adds Screen Reactions, so your selfie camera records over the screen with no editing app needed.
Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection. Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock ship on by default in Android 17. Confirm yours are.
Settings > Security & privacy > Advanced Protection. It blocks accessibility-service abuse, disables device-to-device unlock and hardens Chrome in a single tap.
Inside Advanced Protection, scroll to Intrusion Logging. Security events are stored end-to-end encrypted in your Google account, ready if the phone is ever compromised.
