Opening night of a 30-show run at Madison Square Garden. Late in the set Harry Styles stopped singing to say four words about Dolly Parton — and the room lit up.
August 26 was night one of the residency. Deep into the set, Styles paused the show, stepped forward and spoke directly to the arena instead of counting in the next song.
"I just wanna give a proper thank you to all the musicians who have inspired me over the years," he told the crowd. Then, simply: "Dolly, we love you."
Parton's own recording of "I Will Always Love You" played through the arena. Thousands of phone lights came up, and the crowd sang the whole thing back to nobody on stage.
Parton died on Tuesday, August 25, at the age of 80. The tribute landed about a day later, on the first night Styles had a stage and an audience in front of him.
Opening night was not the show that had been planned. Styles reordered the set, rearranged several older songs, and played one number publicly for the first time.
The residency runs every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from August 26 through October 31. These 30 shows are the only US dates on his 2026 calendar.
When the run wraps on Halloween, Styles will have headlined 52 shows at Madison Square Garden as a solo artist — 30 of them in a single autumn.
His 2022 Love On Tour stand ran 15 straight nights and grossed $63.1 million from 277,000 tickets — the highest-grossing single engagement in the Garden's history.
Together, Together backs his fourth album: 68 shows in seven cities, Amsterdam on May 16 to Sydney on December 13. Its 12 Wembley nights beat Coldplay's 10 in 2025.
The moment of the night was a song he never sang. Twenty-nine more shows run at the Garden through Halloween, and none of them will open quite like this one.
