If Every US Car Went Electric

The Grid Gets a Bigger Job

Powering every vehicle would take roughly 800 to 1,900 billion extra kilowatt-hours a year. That is 20 to 50 percent more electricity than the country generates now.

Unless You Rent

Filling Up in Public

The US has about 253,000 public charging ports, roughly 73,000 of them fast. Some 122,600 stores sell fuel today — and a pump serves a car in five minutes, not forty.

The Road Money Vanishes

Federal fuel tax has sat at 18.4 cents a gallon since 1993 and supplies most Highway Trust Fund revenue. Electric drivers buy no gallons, so the roads need a new bill.

What the Air Gains

Transportation is the largest single source of US greenhouse gases, about 28 percent of the total. Every tailpipe along every highway simply stops emitting.

But Not Every Particle

Battery packs make EVs heavier, so tires shed more dust. Regenerative braking cuts brake dust sharply — one study found 83 percent less. Cleaner air, dirtier rubber.

Lithium demand is set to more than triple by 2040, and announced mines fall roughly 40 percent short by 2035. Three countries refine 86 percent of battery metals.

Americans buy about 16 million vehicles a year and keep them 12.8 years on average. Even if every new car sold were electric, clearing 289 million takes near two decades.
