Look west just after sunset on 16 August. A 19%-lit crescent Moon sits beside Venus, which shines at magnitude -4.3 — brighter than any star in the sky.
Around 14-16 August Venus hits greatest eastern elongation: its largest apparent gap from the Sun. That is why it lingers in the west long after sunset.
The Kappa Cygnids peak overnight. Rates are modest, but these meteors are slow, drawing long gentle streaks — and a 21%-lit Moon leaves the sky dark enough to see them.
First Quarter Moon. Along the terminator — the line dividing lit from dark — shadows run longest, so even cheap binoculars show craters in sharp relief.
Saturn rises in the east after dark and stands high before dawn, drifting through Pisces. A small telescope turns that yellowish dot into a ringed disc.
Reddish and understated, Mars sits low in the east before sunrise all month. It is far from Earth right now, so it reads as a rusty star rather than a disc.
Late in August, Jupiter climbs out of the sunrise glow low in the east. It is the brightest thing in that patch of sky, and it rises earlier every morning.
The Full Moon washes out faint stars, so skip the deep-sky hunting. It is also the setup for the finale: only a full Moon can pass through Earth's shadow.

Not one of these needs equipment beyond your own eyes. Step outside, give them ten minutes to adjust to the dark, and look up before the month runs out.
