Google Chrome vs Brave Browser: Which is better browser?

More then 60 percent of the internet is surfed via Google’s top-notch browser Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox is not able to catch up with Chrome. We have Safari browser in second place, thanks to Apple.

Today in this post I am going to introduce to a new browser, Brave Browser. Well you might be wondering there are already tons of browsers namely Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge.. why bother about any other browser?

Edge browser is made from Google Chrome’s skeleton only and features all the needed functions which Google Chrome offers originally.

So let’s get into the depth of both these browsers, look at pros and cons and then we would be comparing side by side in various fields.

Google Chrome: World’s most used browser

Google Chrome is a cross-platform web browser which was developed by Google. Its first built was released in 2008 for Microsoft Windows, and later it was brought to Linux, macOS, iOS, and  Google’s own mobile operating system Android.

This is true. If you are using Chrome browser once you have logged in with your Google account then you won’t need to log in again for other various services provided by the company such as YouTube, Blogger, Google Analytics, etc.

It’s so easy.. you visit any site… You see Google Login, you press it and Taa-Daa! you are into the website with so much fast login procedure.

Speed

Mozilla Firefox was the ultimate browser before Google Chrome, but speed was one of the factors which defeated Firefox and became one of the favorites among internet consumers.

Google Chrome loads the web a lot faster than other browsers present in the market.

Chrome Extensions

One of the other features that Google introduced with the Chrome browser was the extensions and The Chrome Web Store.

What is a Chrome extension or Web Apps? Where to download free extensions for Google Chrome?

You can use apps to create documents, edit photos, play games, listen to music, and more.

There are two types of apps:

  • Apps that work like regular websites (For example, Gmail or Google Calendar).

Brave Browser

So, in the market, there is another browser that is gaining a lot of attention from the past couple of months. Its the Brave browser. But why this browser is gaining attention when already there are so many established browsers such as Safari, Netflix Navigator and Mozilla Firefox?

What is Brave Browser? An Overview

Brave is a free and open-source web browser developed by Brave Software, Inc. and it is based on the Chromium web browser. The browser blocks ads and website trackers. The company has proposed adopting a pay-to-surf business model in a future version of the browser.

I learned about this browser by stumbling upon various apps on Google’s App Store that time, I didn’t use it as much and just kept it as like that on my phone. But recently my co-worker told me about this browser and I was like… Yeah.. let’s try it and see what’s the fuss about.

And then I decided to use only the Brave browser and leave Chrome for a few days and go in-depth about this.

Experience after 24 hours [Exclusive]

So, after 24 hours I am writing this section, and believe me I just love the way how I surfed the internet for the last 24 hours.

I had blocked ads, so any blog or any anime sites regularly were loading like a charm. This is because the Brave browser blocks the ads on the site and shows you the content that matters to you. It’s more like the Reading mode in Safari, in iPhone, but in this case, it loads the full webpage just leaving out the ads.

Below you can see the stats after browsing the internet for 24 hours(normal daily routine browsing of mine.

24hrs stats by Brave Browser

As you can see that within 24 hours there were more than 50 trackers from which I was protected and more than 800 ads were blocked within 24 hours. You can imagine how many ads get loaded when you surf the internet!

Brave Shortcuts

Within this time period, I also happened to stumble across the various settings that the browser provides to the user and one of the features I liked is of shortcuts (this is available on google chrome also with help of some workaround!)

For example, if you want to visit Google, so instead of typing google.com or google.in you just type: g   and hit enter and Google.com page would be loaded (if you are connected to the internet! :P)

What is the safest and most secure browser available?

On the internet no one is secure! But in short, You can use the Tor Browser or Brave browser, which is one of the safest and secure browsers right now in the market.

Is Brave Browser faster than Chrome?

Brave browser is built on the base of Chrome only, but with features like ad blocking and privacy protection, somehow Brave Browser tends to be faster than Google Chrome.

Brave Rewards

Brave Rewards goes beyond anonymously supporting your favorite content creators. Private ads are enabled by default in Brave Rewards, providing the ability to earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) every time you view an ad. Ads are presented separately from your web content at a convenient time, and keep your personal details completely private and anonymous.

You can also control the number of private ads you’d like to see while you surf the internet, and earn 70% of the ad revenue that the Brave Browser Team receives from advertisers. In exchange for your attention, you’ll accumulate tokens as you browse.

You can contribute these tokens to the sites you love — with more options coming later. And Yes! you can also turn off private ads at any time in the Brave Rewards settings page if you no longer want to earn tokens by viewing them.

Question: Why does the Brave Browser look like Chrome?

Answer:  This is because it’s developed on the top of Google Chrome’s codebase and adds an extra layer of features to smooth the user experience on the browser.

What Is Basic Attention Token? Introduction to BAT

Basic Attention Token(BAT) improves the efficiency of digital advertising by creating a new token that can be exchanged between publishers, advertisers, and users. It all happens on the Ethereum blockchain. You can say it as one of the other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoins or Litecoin etc..

The token can be used to obtain a variety of advertising and attention-based services on the Basic Attention Token platform. The utility of the token is based on user attention, which simply means a person’s focused mental engagement.

At this point, I hope you got the understanding of what is a Brave Browser and what is their business model. I also cleared some doubts which generally people have when they compare Google Chrome with the Brave browser.

Excerpt from the Press Release of Brave Browser Blog

Brave is loved by our community for its speed, and while a lot of the improvements come from throwing out the likes of trackers and ads, we always try to make sure every component of the browser is engineered well and has minimal overheads. Although most users are unlikely to notice much of a difference in cutting the ad-blocker overheads, the 69x reduction in overheads means the device CPU has so much more time to perform other functions.

Secondly, the context in which ad-blocker runs matters: deeper integration within the browser means that we can run optimised, native code, and that there are less overheads of propagating request information across multiple processes up to an extension. But because the browser already does some of the work useful for the ad-blocker, we can avoid duplicating it and further reduce the overheads, resulting in an ad-blocker with the best in class performance.
