New tracking device will help you find things more easily, even when they’re moving
Apple is getting ready to launch a new version of its popular AirTag tracker, and it’s bringing some exciting improvements that will make finding your lost items much easier.

The news comes from code found in an internal version of iOS 26, Apple’s upcoming phone software. The leaked information shows Apple has been working on several new features for what will be called the AirTag 2.
What’s New in AirTag 2?
The second-generation AirTag will include four main improvements that make it better than the current model:
Easier Setup: The new AirTag will have an improved pairing process. While the current AirTag is already pretty easy to set up, Apple wants to make it even simpler. This means you’ll spend less time connecting it to your phone and more time using it.
Better Battery Information: Instead of just telling you when the battery is low, the new AirTag will show detailed battery level reporting. You’ll know exactly how much power is left, so you won’t be surprised when it needs a new battery.
Track Moving Items: One of the biggest problems with the current AirTag is that it has trouble finding things that are moving around. The AirTag 2 will have an “Improved Moving” feature that lets you track items even when they’re in motion. This could be really helpful if you attach an AirTag to a pet’s collar or a moving vehicle.
Works Better in Crowds: Apple is also adding a feature for improving tracking in crowded places. This means your AirTag will work better at busy airports, shopping malls, or concerts where there are lots of people around.
How AirTag 2 Will Work
The improvements come from a new Ultra Wideband chip that will improve the Precision Finding feature. This is the technology that helps your iPhone point you in the exact direction of your AirTag.
When you’re looking for something with the current AirTag, your phone shows arrows and tells you how far away the item is. With the new chip, this feature will work even better, especially from farther away.
When Can You Buy It?
Apple originally planned to release the AirTag 2 in 2025. The product is labeled “2025AirTag” in the iOS 26 code, which shows that was the plan.
However, it looks like Apple has delayed the launch. Most experts now think the AirTag 2 will come out in early 2026, possibly around March or April.
What Will It Look Like?
Don’t expect the AirTag 2 to look very different from the current model. So far, there haven’t been any rumors about a new design. It will probably be the same small, round disc that looks similar to a coin or button.
The AirTag will continue to feature a replaceable battery, which is good news for people who don’t want to buy a whole new tracker when the battery dies. You’ll still be able to pop in a new coin battery when needed.
Some reports suggest Apple might make the speakers harder to remove. This would be a safety improvement to stop people from taking out the speaker to make the AirTag silent.
Other Apple Products Coming Soon
The same leaked code also revealed information about other Apple products:
HomePod Mini Update: Apple is working on a new version of the HomePod mini powered by the S10 chip found in the latest Apple Watch models. The current HomePod mini uses an older S5 chip, so this upgrade will make it faster and more reliable. However, it probably won’t get Apple Intelligence features.
Smart Home Device: Apple is also developing a new smart home hub device, sometimes called the “HomePad.” This product would use a more powerful A18 chip and could run Apple Intelligence features.
What Is an AirTag?
For those who don’t know, an AirTag is a small tracking device that helps you find your belongings. You can attach it to your keys, backpack, wallet, or anything else you don’t want to lose.
When you can’t find something, you open the Find My app on your iPhone. The app shows you where your AirTag is located. If it’s nearby, you can make it play a sound. If it’s far away, other people’s iPhones can help locate it without them knowing.
The current AirTag costs around $29 for one or $99 for a pack of four. Apple hasn’t said how much the AirTag 2 will cost, but it will probably be close to the same price.
Why the Improvements Matter
These new features solve real problems that people have with the current AirTag:
- Many people attach AirTags to pets or items that move around, but the current model struggles with this
- In busy places, it can be hard to figure out which bag or item is yours when there are many similar items nearby
- Users have asked for more detailed battery information instead of just a warning when it’s almost dead
The AirTag 2 appears to fix all these issues while keeping the same basic design that people already like.
Apple hasn’t officially announced the AirTag 2 yet, but with all these details appearing in the company’s software, an announcement is likely coming soon. Stay tuned for more information as we get closer to the expected launch date in early 2026.
