Apple Watch Series 12 in the 46mm aluminium case now starts at $449 in the United States, $20 more than the equivalent Series 11. The smaller 42mm aluminium model holds at $399, which is the only figure Apple put in its announcement — the increase sits one click deeper, in the store configurator.

What actually changed

The larger aluminium Apple Watch had started at $429 since the Series 4 arrived in 2018, and the step up from the small case to the large one had cost $30 that whole time. That gap is now $50. The same $20 carries through to the cellular version, which moves from $529 to $549.

Nothing else in the lineup moved. Titanium and ceramic cases are priced exactly where the Series 11 equivalents were, and the $100 premium for cellular is unchanged across every configuration.

Every US price, in one place

Apple's press release lists a single number. These are the actual starting prices on Apple's US store, before bands, engraving or AppleCare:

  • 42mm aluminium, GPS — $399
  • 46mm aluminium, GPS — $449
  • 42mm aluminium, GPS + Cellular — $499
  • 46mm aluminium, GPS + Cellular — $549
  • 42mm titanium, GPS + Cellular — $699
  • 46mm titanium, GPS + Cellular — $749
  • 42mm ceramic, GPS + Cellular — $899
  • 46mm ceramic, GPS + Cellular — $949

Titanium and ceramic are cellular-only, so there is no cheaper GPS-only route into either. The ceramic case is the new option this year, and it is also the heaviest and physically largest of the three at any given size.

Where this applies

These are US prices. Apple opened pre-orders on 9 September in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the UAE, the UK, the US and more than 50 other countries and regions, with watches reaching stores on Friday 18 September. Local pricing is set per market and does not track the US figures at a straight exchange rate, so a $20 change in the US does not reliably mean a proportional change in pounds, euros or rupees — check Apple's own store for your country rather than converting.

Why a quiet $20

Memory prices have been the story behind most hardware pricing this year, and Apple has already raised prices on several existing iPhone models against that backdrop. The Series 12 is part of it too: we reported earlier that Series 12 and Ultra 4 doubled their RAM to 4GB while the $399 and $799 headline prices stayed put. What the store listings show is that the headline price staying put is not the same as the lineup staying put — the larger case absorbed part of the cost instead.

Google made a more visible version of the same call, as we covered when the Pixel 11 price rose on spiralling RAM costs. Apple's approach keeps the number people quote intact and moves the one they discover at checkout.

If you are buying

The practical question is whether the bigger screen is worth $50 rather than $30 to you. The 46mm case is the one to pick if you rely on watch faces with many complications or read a lot of text on the wrist; the 42mm is easier to live with on a smaller wrist and now saves more than it used to.

Trade-in is the other lever, and it can wipe out the difference entirely — Apple raised its US trade-in values across iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple Watch earlier this year, so an older Watch is worth checking before you pay the size premium outright.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Apple Watch Series 12 cost?

In the United States the Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 for the 42mm aluminium case with GPS. The 46mm aluminium model starts at $449, and adding cellular costs $100 more in either size. Titanium starts at $699 and the new ceramic case at $899, both cellular only.

Did Apple raise the price of the Apple Watch Series 12?

Partly. The $399 starting price is unchanged from the Series 11, but the 46mm aluminium model went up $20, from $429 to $449, and its cellular version moved from $529 to $549. Titanium and ceramic prices match the equivalent Series 11 configurations.

Why does the 46mm Apple Watch cost more than it used to?

Apple has not explained the change. It lands during a memory chip shortage that has pushed up prices across the industry, and the Series 12 also doubled its RAM to 4GB. Keeping the advertised $399 entry price while raising the larger size is a way to absorb cost without changing the number Apple quotes.

When does the Apple Watch Series 12 go on sale?

Pre-orders opened on 9 September 2026 and the watches reach stores on Friday 18 September. Apple listed Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, the UAE, the UK and the US among more than 50 countries and regions in the first wave.

Is the 46mm Apple Watch worth the extra $50?

It depends on how you use the watch. The larger case gives you more room for watch faces with several complications and makes messages and lists easier to read at a glance. If you mostly glance at the time and notifications, or have a smaller wrist, the 42mm now saves you more than it did on the Series 11.
