Switch or Switch 2? Answer this first

A lot of 2026 lists mix the two machines. Then you buy Mario Kart World and find out it will not load on the old Switch in the backpack. That is a wasted Saturday.

• Switch 2 exclusive means Switch 2 only. Bananza, Mario Kart World, Pokopia, Fortune's Weave, Splatoon Raiders, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, the Star Fox remake, Diablo 4, Valheim. No original Switch version.
• Switch 1 game almost always runs on Switch 2. Nintendo says over 15,000 Switch 1 titles passed basic tests. A tiny list still breaks (Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Overcooked! All You Can Eat). Ring Fit and Nintendo Switch Sports want the old Joy-Con, not Joy-Con 2.
• Switch 2 Edition is the old game plus a paid or free bump. Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild got the big paid editions. Odyssey, Splatoon 3, Scarlet/Violet, and Echoes of Wisdom got free performance updates. Check the eShop line that says “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” before you pay twice.

The hardware itself is $499.99 in the US after the 1 September 2026 rise (it was $449.99). UK buyers saw a separate bump; we covered the Switch 2 UK price.

What ranking lists still get wrong in 2026

We opened the pages that still rank for this keyword. Four stale calls keep getting copied into AI answers.

• They rank Switch 2 exclusives as if you still own a 2017 Switch. Tom's Guide and GamesRadar+ write “best Switch 2 games.” Google still sends “best Nintendo Switch games” traffic to pages that never say “this will not run on Switch 1.” We print the console on every row.
• They rank games that are not out. The Ocarina of Time remake is a 2026 window with no US month. Metroid Ravenous is 28 January 2027. The Duskbloods has no date. Nintendo already denied a 24 September claim. You cannot play those tonight.
• June lists missed September. GamesRadar+ last touched its Switch 2 20 on 29 June 2026. That page never saw Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave (17 September) or Diablo 4 on Switch 2 (15 September). A list that is three months old is a time capsule.
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is not Mario Kart World. World is Switch 2 only. Eight Deluxe still gets its own updates, including 8-player split-screen on Switch 2 hardware. If you only have Switch 1, Eight Deluxe is the kart game. Full stop.

Pokopia sales are the other gap. Two clocks exist, and lists mix them. Nintendo’s 30 June 2026 sell-in table has Pokopia at 3.68 million (behind Mario Kart World, Bananza, and Legends Z-A Switch 2 Edition). The Pokemon Company and Nintendo then said worldwide physical + digital passed 5 million on 14 August 2026, about four months after the 5 March launch. That is not a side cozy. The 12 best Nintendo Switch games to play in 2026

Ranked for US players who can launch a game today. Health (sales, 2026 patches, a live eShop page) beats nostalgia. Unreleased sequels do not get a free pass.

1. Donkey Kong Bananza — best Switch 2 game, best overall exclusive

US price: $69.99 digital · Console: Switch 2 only · Shipped: 17 July 2025 · Sales: 4.78 million as of 30 June 2026

This is the one we would install first on a US Switch 2 in 2026. You smash dirt. You punch a tunnel. Pauline sings. It feels like Super Mario Odyssey with a wrecking ball. Tom's Guide still calls it the system seller. That tracks.

• Destructible levels, not a straight 2D DK Country copy
• Hundreds of shiny collectibles if that is your brain
• No original Switch version. Do not buy it for a Switch Lite

The catch: $70 is a lot if you only wanted a short platformer. Best for: anyone who bought the new box and wants Nintendo's own game, not a port.

2. Mario Kart World — best party game, $80 on purpose

US price: $79.99 digital · Console: Switch 2 only · Shipped: 5 June 2025 (launch) · Sales: 15.39 million as of 30 June 2026, inflated by the hardware bundle

24 racers. Wall ride. Rail grind. Knockout Tour with 48 players. Free Roam if you just want to drive. A September Direct dropped 10 Super Mario Kart circuits into Versus for free, plus two new Knockout routes. We covered that SNES-track update the day it shipped.

It is less stuffed than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's DLC mountain. World is the new toy. Eight Deluxe is the old toy that still works on both machines.

• Online needs Nintendo Switch Online ($19.99/year individual in the US)
• Launch bundles used to pack this in. The $499.99 Choose Your Game bundle (Mario Kart World, Bananza, or Pokopia) jumped with the console price. Check the shelf before you assume the old $450 tag

The catch: $80 digital stings if you already own Eight Deluxe. Best for: the living room. Skip if: you only have Switch 1.

3. Pokemon Pokopia — best cozy Switch game, and it is selling like a mainline

US price: $69.99 digital · Console: Switch 2 only · Shipped: 5 March 2026 · Sales: 5 million-plus by mid-August 2026

You are a Ditto. You rebuild land. Pokemon move in. Think Animal Crossing plus Dragon Quest Builders, not a gym-battle RPG. GamesRadar+ put it at #2 on a June list. The sales number is why we keep it this high in September.

• Free Dive update is live. Bubbly Basin is paid Expansion Pass Part 1. Parts 2 and 3 are late 2026 and 2027
• Excellent in handheld. Chip away for 20 minutes
• No PC, no phone, no old Switch

The catch: if you wanted to battle in Lumiose, that is Legends Z-A, not this. Best for: craft, build, befriend. More cozy cousins: games like Animal Crossing on phones.

4. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom — Switch 2 Edition

US price: Switch 2 Edition is a paid upgrade if you already own TotK; full copy is first-party full price · Console: base game on Switch 1, Edition on Switch 2 · Shipped: 12 May 2023; Switch 2 Edition 5 June 2025

Ultrahand still wins. You glue a fan to a log and the puzzle dies. On Switch 2 it holds 60 fps and looks like the machine can breathe. Zelda Notes in the phone app adds voice memories and extra challenges.

If you never played either open Zelda, start here, not Breath of the Wild. BotW is the cleaner first trip only if you hate the building toys. Both Switch 2 Editions are worth it if the 2017/2023 versions stuttered on the old chip.

The catch: do not buy the Switch 2 Edition if you do not own Switch 2. The original cartridge still plays on Switch 1. Best for: 100-hour adventure.

5. Hades II — best indie on the new box

US price: check eShop (Steam list is $29.99 class; Nintendo often matches) · Console: Switch 2 and other stores · 1.0: 2025

You are Melinoe. You fight Chronos. Each run teaches you one more trick. Supergiant shipped the full game after Early Access. Tom's Guide still ranks it in the top five Switch 2 games in September 2026. That is earned.

• Short sessions. Perfect handheld
• The first Hades is cheaper and still great on Switch 1
• If roguelikes make you tired, skip to Bananza

Best for: “one more run” people. Skip if: you wanted a long story with a save every 40 hours.

6. Pokemon Legends: Z-A — best Pokemon battles

US price: $59.99 class · Console: Switch 1 and Switch 2 (play it on Switch 2 if you can) · Shipped: 2025

All of Lumiose City. Real-time battles, not the old turn wait. It is the first mainline-adjacent Pokemon on Switch 2, and it also exists on the original Switch. Frame rate is the reason to prefer the new hardware.

The catch: it is not Pokopia. Do not mix the two. Z-A is catch and fight. Pokopia is build and host. Best for: Pokemon fans who wanted the city, not another route-and-gym tour.

7. Super Mario Odyssey — still the 3D Mario, now with a free Switch 2 boost

US price: $59.99 · Console: Switch 1, with a free performance update on Switch 2 · Shipped: 27 October 2017

There is still no new 3D Mario for Switch 2. Polygon said that out loud in September 2026. So Odyssey remains the answer. Capture a T-Rex. Throw Cappy. Moon hunt until 3 a.m.

Nintendo's own compatibility page lists Odyssey among the titles that got a free bump on the new chip. You do not buy a second copy for that.

Best for: everyone, both consoles. Skip if: you already 100% it and wanted Bananza's smash instead. Play Bananza.

8. Super Mario Bros. Wonder + Meetup at Bellabel Park

US price: Wonder is $59.99; the Switch 2 Edition adds Meetup minigames and remixed challenges · Console: Wonder on both; Meetup extras are Switch 2

Best 2D Mario since Super Mario World. Badge modifiers. Wonder flowers that break the level. The Switch 2 Edition piles on Vs minigames, extra characters, and nasty remix stages. Families will use the extra. Solo players still buy it for Wonder itself.

Best for: couch 2D. Skip if: you only wanted 3D. That is Odyssey or Bananza.

9. Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition — best big third-party port

US price: $69.99 class, often on sale · Console: Switch 2 (the old Switch never got a real version) · Includes Phantom Liberty

Night City on a handheld. GamesRadar+ said the Switch 2 build sits around medium-to-high PC settings. That is the whole pitch. You are V. Keanu is in your head. The 2020 launch mess is old news. This is the complete game.

The catch: it is large. Plan storage. Other hungry ports we measured: Oblivion Remastered at 61.5GB, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at 130GB. Cyberpunk is in that world. Best for: RPG hours on a train.

10. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave — newest Nintendo RPG, out 17 September

US price: $69.99 digital, $79.99 boxed, Dagdan Collection $119.99 · Console: Switch 2 only · Size: 29.5GB US eShop (27.5GB UK) · Shipped: 17 September 2026

This is the pick other 2026 lists still skip because they froze in June. Intelligent Systems. Dagdan Empire. Four routes. Same universe as Three Houses. Single player only. HDR on a compatible TV. Full store notes: file size and editions.

• Need a microSD Express card if internal storage is full. Regular microSD will not install games
• Boxed copy may be a game-key card. Read the back of the box

Best for: tactics fans this month. Skip if: you wanted smash or karts. Come back after Bananza.

11. Hollow Knight: Silksong

US price: $19.99 class · Console: Switch 1 and Switch 2 (it runs beautifully on the new chip) · Shipped: 2025

Team Cherry's sequel. Hornet. Tough. Pretty. The eShop melted on launch day. It is still one of the best $20 spends on either Switch. If you bounced off the first Hollow Knight, this is not easier. If you loved it, stop reading and install it.

Best for: metroidvania hours. Skip if: you wanted a chill evening. Play Pokopia or Yoshi.

12. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition

US price: $69.99 class · Console: Switch 2 · Includes Shadow of the Erdtree plus two new starting classes

The Lands Between in a backpack. FromSoftware. Delayed, then worth it. Tom's Guide still has it in the must-play pile in September 2026. Hard. Huge. Not a Nintendo exclusive. The exclusive above this rank exist so you buy the box. Elden Ring exists so the box can play what your PC already did.

The catch: if you already finished it on Steam or PS5, the Switch 2 copy is for travel, not a new hobby. Best for: souls fans who commute.

Best games if you still have the original Switch

You do not need to buy a $499.99 Switch 2 to have a great year. These still hold.

• Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild — the open Zeldas. Expect 30 fps wobble. The games are still the games
• Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Bros. Wonder
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — your kart game. World is not coming
• Animal Crossing: New Horizons — still the island. A Switch 2 Edition exists if you upgrade later
• Splatoon 3 — free boost on Switch 2; the game still inks on Switch 1
• Hades (the first one), Hollow Knight / Silksong, Stardew Valley
• Metroid Dread and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
• Pokemon Legends: Z-A — playable, smoother on Switch 2

• NSO + Expansion Pack — $49.99 / year individual, $79.99 / year family. Adds GameCube, N64, GBA, Genesis, and some upgrade packs

Online Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Diablo 4 need NSO. Save Data Cloud needs it too. Expansion Pack is worth it if you want GameCube Zelda or Mario Kart 64 in the app, not if you only race World once a month.

True free: Fortnite-class third parties on the eShop, plus the NSO classic library after you pay the sub. There is no free Bananza.

A 30% eShop event, the Nintendo customer appreciation sale, runs 13–26 September 2026. First-party $70 games are rarely in that pile. Indies and older first-party often are. Check before you pay list.

• Super Mario Bros. Wonder — both consoles. Badge assists help

How to pick a Switch game in 10 minutes

1. Name the box. Switch 1 or Switch 2. If you do not know, look at the kickstand. Switch 2 is bigger and the Joy-Con slide with a different click
2. Name the job. Smash, karts, Zelda, cozy, RPG, indie. Mixing jobs is how you buy four $70 games and finish none
3. If you have Switch 2 and $70 for one Nintendo game, buy Bananza. If the living room is the point, buy Mario Kart World. If the couch is calm, buy Pokopia
4. If you have Switch 1, buy Tears of the Kingdom or Odyssey or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Then stop
5. Check NSO. Online karts and Diablo need the $19.99 year. Cloud saves need it too
6. Check storage. 256GB fills fast. Revelation is 130GB. Fortune's Weave is ~30GB. Valheim is 210 MB. Plan the card (microSD Express only for games)
7. Do not pre-order a 2027 Metroid to play on a Monday night. Play Dread or Prime 4 if you need Samus now

If you buy one of the best Nintendo Switch games in 2026 for a Switch 2, make it Donkey Kong Bananza. Add Mario Kart World if the house plays together. Add Pokemon Pokopia if you wanted calm. On an original Switch, buy Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Leave the Ocarina remake and Metroid Ravenous off the Home screen until Nintendo ships them.

Do this next: open the eShop on the console you actually own. If it is Switch 2, download Bananza (or the kart demo of your choice if money is tight this week, then Bananza on payday). If it is Switch 1, start TotK in the first plateau shrine. Play one hour. If that hour is fun, you found your machine. Then pick a second game from the table — not a twelfth.
