What is an RTS game?
A real-time strategy (RTS) game is a strategy game where you build a base, gather food, wood, gold, or minerals, and fight while time never pauses for a turn. You click units. You queue buildings. A bad 20 seconds can lose the match.
Age of Empires, StarCraft, and Command & Conquer are the usual examples. If the clock stops so you can think, or a village waits on a timer, you are in a different hobby.

Google still ranks pages that mix other genres into “best RTS games.” That wastes a Saturday. Use this filter before you buy.
- Frostpunk 2 is a city-survival sim. You can pause the city. You do not 1v1 a rush. A January 2026 PC list still ranked it #2 as an RTS. It is a great game. It is not this query.
- Total War: Warhammer 3 is a turn-based campaign map plus real-time battles. You do not boom villagers in fog of war. Same stale list put it at #3.
- Stellaris is a pause-friendly 4X. A February 2026 all-time list parked it next to StarCraft II. Different click speed. Different hobby.
- Civilization is turns. Clash of Clans is a village with timers. XCOM is a small squad on a grid. If you wanted those, start with our Android strategy list or games like Clash of Clans.

What ranking lists still get wrong in 2026
We opened the pages that still rank for this keyword. Four stale calls keep getting copied into AI answers.
- Stormgate is still treated like a live ladder. Frost Giant turned off Versus and Co-op in a May 2026 offline patch after its server partner shut down. A few players later tested peer-to-peer on a PTR. That is not a public NA ladder. Steam has sat near single-digit concurrent players this month. PC Gamer reported the shutdown. If a 2026 list still ranks Stormgate as a multiplayer pick, stop reading it.
- Dawn of War IV is not out. KING Art Games moved launch to December 3, 2026. Commander Edition starts November 30. You cannot play it this week. Play Dawn of War — Definitive Edition ($29.99) until then. PLAION posted the date.
- Warcraft III did not stop in 2003. Wrong as of 12 September 2026. Blizzard shipped Forsaken Kingdom, the first new official campaign since The Frozen Throne. It is $29.99 DLC, not a free patch. Price split: what is free vs paid.
- Age of Empires Mobile is not Age of Empires II. The phone game is a live-service empire with timers. The PC and console campaign you remember is Definitive Edition.
PCGamesN went back to StarCraft II in July 2026 and said nothing else quite hits like it. That tracks for 1v1 micro. It does not mean you should ignore Age of Empires IV, which is the healthier modern ranked scene.

1. Age of Empires IV — best overall, best modern ranked RTS

This is the one we would install first on a US PC in 2026. Civs play differently. You do not need StarCraft-level clicks to win. Matches turn on builds, map control, and when you take a fight — not on 300 actions a minute.
World's Edge launched Yue Fei's Legacy on May 7: eight Song–Jin missions, mounted villagers, Iron Pagodas, Eruptors. Raiders of the North (Vikings and Scots) is dated Q4 2026. Ranked still pops. Steam recent reviews sit Very Positive (about 84% in the last 30 days when we checked).

StarCraft II turned 16 this summer. The ladder is still there. NA players in 2026 report queues in seconds to about a minute in most leagues. All three races and the full unit roster are free in Versus. Ranked unlocks after 10 first-wins-of-the-day, or any small purchase.
The campaign is still the best RTS story teaching tool we have. Play Wings of Liberty for $0. If you like it, buy the rest. Co-op commanders go to level 5 free. PCGamesN replayed the campaign in July 2026 and said the polish still has not been matched.

If you care about “will I find a game at 11 p.m. in Texas,” this is the answer. Steam Charts shows about 16,800–17,200 average concurrent players over the last 30 days, with peaks over 26,000. No other classic RTS is even close.
The Last Chieftains (February 17) added Mapuche, Muisca, and Tupi. The Viking Sagas adds Danes, Saxons, and Varangians, reworks the base Vikings for free, and ships a 15-mission Harald Hardrada campaign. That is not a dead 1999 game. That is a 2026 live service that still feels like Age 2.

The catch: the civ roster is huge. Start with Franks or the Art of War tutorial, not a random new DLC civ. Best for: nostalgia plus a real 2026 player base.

Blizzard dropped this on 12 September at BlizzCon, then put it in the shop the same day. First new official Warcraft III campaign since 2003. 5. Age of Mythology: Retold — best mythology RTS, best DualSense RTS

Villagers plus gods. You still boom an economy. Then you drop a meteor. Retold is the 2024 remake that actually got 2026 content: Freyr, extra pantheon packs, then Obsidian Mirror with Quetzalcoatl, Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli, and a 12-mission campaign. Expansion Pass owners got it on day one. Game Pass covers the base game, not every DLC.

This is the actual 2026 sci-fi RTS launch other lists still skip. Starlance Studios and Ironward mix StarCraft-style bases with hero units and a Helldivers-like Galactic War. Early Access has 13 campaign missions, 10 co-op missions, four main factions, and skirmish vs AI or other players. Steam says they plan about a year in Early Access.
PC Gamer's Fraser Brown still recommended waiting for 1.0. That is the honest call if you hate unfinished UI and a thin ladder. Buy it now only if you want to live in Galactic War and accept bugs. Do not treat ~100 Steam CCU as a StarCraft replacement.

Tanks, cover, retreat, artillery. Italy and North Africa. It is still the best-looking WWII RTS you can buy new. English Steam reviews are Mixed (about 62%). That gap is the story: the tactics engine is great, the launch year was rough, and $60 full price feels high in 2026.

- Company of Heroes 1 or 2 is the tighter classic if you only want one (some all-time lists still rank CoH2 over 3)

11. Command & Conquer Remastered Collection — the real Westwood start

Tempest Rising is the new C&C-like. This is the actual 1995 Command & Conquer and 1996 Red Alert, in 4K, with the expansions, rebuilt multiplayer, and the Frank Klepacki soundtrack. Petroglyph (ex-Westwood) shipped it in 2020. It still holds because the campaigns are complete and the sale price is snack money.
- Best cheap weekend if you missed the '90s on a CRT
- Includes the secret missions and a map editor
- Online is a hobby crowd. Buy it for the campaigns
The catch: old mission design, modern paint. Best for: “games like Command and Conquer” when you want the original, not a $40 homage.
12. Sins of a Solar Empire II — best space 4X in real time
US price: $49.99 on Steam · PC · Very Positive overall (~84% of ~8,700 reviews)
You run an empire across a star map. Fleets meet in real time. It is slower than StarCraft and much bigger. Capital ships level up. Trade, culture, and diplomacy sit next to the laser show. Ironclad and Stardock shipped it in 2024; it is still the space RTS people actually launch in 2026. Healthier than treating Homeworld 3 as a safe first buy.
- One match can eat an evening. That is the feature
- Mods help the late-game AI, which players still argue about
- Not a “click 80 workers” game. Good if Age 2 feels too frantic
The catch: $50 is a lot if you only wanted a 20-minute skirmish. Best for: Homeworld brains who also want 4X.
Best RTS for beginners in 2026
Start with Age of Empires IV if you have Game Pass or about $40. Tutorials, then the campaign, then ranked. You can win with brains, not 300 APM.
Age of Mythology: Retold is the friendlier console start. Gods make mistakes less punishing. Halo Wars 2 on Game Pass is the pad game that never asks you to box-select 80 villagers.
Do not jump into StarCraft II ranked on night one. Play Wings of Liberty or vs AI first. ZeroSpace is a bad first RTS because Early Access still fights you.

PC Game Pass is $13.99 a month in the US after Microsoft's April 2026 cut. Ultimate is $22.99. One month is less than a single $39.99 RTS.

Age of Empires IV vs Age of Empires II: which one?
Pick Age of Empires IV if you want the modern ranked ladder, clearer civs, and 2026 support (Yue Fei now, Raiders of the North later this year). Pick Age of Empires II: DE if you want the huge Steam crowd, endless campaigns, and The Viking Sagas on September 22.
Both sit on Game Pass. Play a skirmish of each this week. Keep the one you replay. You do not need both DLC piles.

- Frostpunk 2, Total War, and Stellaris labeled as RTS. Buy them if you want those games. They will not scratch a StarCraft itch.
- Dawn of War IV this week. It launches December 3. Pre-order only if you already decided on KING Art's sequel, not because a list ranked it as playable.
- ZeroSpace as a $40 “safe” StarCraft replacement. It is real. It is Early Access. PC Gamer said wait. We agree unless you like unfinished sci-fi.
- Age of Empires Mobile as the best RTS. Timer empire. Fine with friends. Not this list's job.
- Homeworld 3 as a safe first space RTS. The series is beloved; the 2024 sequel split the room. Sins 2 is the healthier space pick right now.
- Any APK named “Age of Empires 2 Mobile Official.” That is a clone. The real Definitive Edition is on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
How to pick an RTS in 10 minutes
- Name the job. Ranked 1v1, a long campaign, couch play, or free chaos. Mixing jobs is how you uninstall everything.
- If you have Game Pass, start there. Age of Empires IV for ranked. Age of Mythology: Retold for gods. Age 2 if you want the biggest queue. Halo Wars 2 for a pad.
- If you have $0, install StarCraft II and Beyond All Reason. Play one Wings of Liberty mission and one BAR skirmish vs AI. Keep the one that feels fun.
- If you loved Red Alert, buy Tempest Rising on a 25% sale ($29.99 beats $39.99), or grab C&C Remastered when it is $4.99.
