The best games on Nintendo DS are Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros., Chrono Trigger, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and The World Ends with You. This list has 50 picks: 30 in detail, then 20 more. Each one shows its US release date, Metacritic score, and ESRB rating.

We also tell you how to play it today. New DS games are long gone, so there are three ways in: a used cart, an official Android version, or an emulator. Seven of the 50 have an official Android version on Google Play. We checked the facts on November 1, 2026.

How we picked these 50 (checked November 1, 2026)

  • Real DS games only. Each game came out on the Nintendo DS in the US. Dates are US dates. Where two sources gave different days, we show only the month and year.
  • Scores, dates, and ratings. Metacritic scores and ESRB ratings come from Metacritic's DS list. We cross-checked the top 30 against each game's Wikipedia page. Sales come from Wikipedia's best-selling DS games list or the game's own page. The dates behind those sales numbers differ by game.
  • Android facts are live. Prices, ratings, and dates come from US Google Play listings we opened on November 1, 2026. Ratings change every day.
  • We compared this list with the pages ranking for this search. That includes IGN, GameSpot, Cultured Vultures, Retro Dodo, Collider, and ENEBA. 19 of Metacritic's top 20 DS games are in our 50. The one left out is Flipnote Studio, an app. Most of those pages skip how to play each game today, and none of them gave ESRB ratings or a table of microphone games.
  • A spread of types. Six groups, so a platformer fan and a puzzle fan both find something.
  • We did not replay all 50 for this update. We do not claim to have. Scores are critics' scores, not ours.
  • No ROM links. Emulators are legal. Game files are the line. See the legal note below.
  • Photos. The Nintendo DS photo at the top and the Pokéwalker photo are public domain, by Evan-Amos, via Wikimedia Commons. The score chart is ours.

The numbering counts the games. It is not a strict ranking. Unless an entry says otherwise, we found no Google Play listing for the game (exact-title search, US store).

The DS sold 154.02 million systems worldwide by March 31, 2016. It launched in North America on November 21, 2004 at $149.99.

  • Prices and ratings move. Check the listing before you buy.
  • Play also has DS emulators from other developers. We do not review them here. Our DS and 3DS emulator guide covers the ones we trust.

How to play DS games in 2026

Pick the way that fits you. Most people end up using two.

  • Real hardware. A DS, DS Lite, or DSi plays DS carts. So does a 3DS-family system. Nintendo says all DS games are compatible with 3DS family systems, except a few that need the GBA slot. DS games do not show in 3D, and they do not use StreetPass or SpotPass.
  • Which DS to buy. The DS Lite has a Game Boy Advance slot. The DSi and DSi XL have an SD card slot instead, so they cannot play GBA games. Pick a DS or DS Lite if you also want GBA games or slot-2 extras.
  • Used carts. New DS games are gone. Buy used and look at sold prices, not asking prices. Rare carts like Radiant Historia cost more.
  • Official Android versions. See the Google Play section above. This is the cleanest option for 7 of our 50.
  • An emulator on your phone. Our best DS emulator for Android guide picks the app and shows setup. A gamepad helps. See our gamepad support list.
  • An emulator is legal. A game file you did not dump from your own cart is not.
  • We do not link to ROM sites. We do not host game files.
  • Nintendo has ended eShop purchases on Wii U and the 3DS family as of March 27, 2023 at 5:00 PM Pacific. You can still redownload what you bought.
  • Nintendo shut down most Wi-Fi Connection functions on May 20, 2014. That service ran DS online play, so online modes in these games are gone.

Touch, mic, and two screens: check this first

The DS had two screens, a touch screen, and a microphone. Some games lean on them hard. This matters most if you play on a phone.

Games that use the microphone

GameWhat the mic does
Zelda: Phantom HourglassUses the touch screen and the microphone. Wikipedia does not say how.
Zelda: Spirit TracksYou blow into the mic to play Zelda's pan flute.
The World Ends with YouNeku's attacks can use touch motions or shouting into the mic.
NintendogsYou say your dog's name and teach tricks by voice.
Brain AgeYou can say answers out loud. The speaking test can be skipped.
WarioWare: Touched! Some microgames ask you to blow into the mic.
Phoenix Wright: Ace AttorneyBlowing into the mic to find fingerprints is optional.
GTA: Chinatown WarsThe mic can whistle for a taxi.

  • The World Ends with You: two fighters, one on each screen.

On an emulator: the melonDS for Android README does not mention the microphone. It lists local multiplayer under missing features. Test a mic game before you count on it. Our emulator guide explains the two-screen problem on a phone.

Famous DS games we left out, and why

Readers will look for these. Here is what we did.

  • Flipnote Studio. Metacritic ranks it #2, at 93. It is a DSiWare animation app, not a game on a cart.
  • Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. They sold 8.52 million and scored 80. They are direct sequels to Black and White.
  • Big sellers. Mario Party DS (9.31 million sold, score 72), Big Brain Academy (6.15 million, 74), and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga (4.76 million, 80) sold well. Critics scored them lower than our picks.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and Scribblenauts. Several lists name them. Scores are 80 and 79, so they missed our cut. Super Scribblenauts, at 81, made the quick picks.
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. A few lists name Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky. We did not check them for this update.

Bottom line: where to start

  • Want one safe pick? Mario Kart DS.
  • Want a story? Chrono Trigger, on Google Play today.
  • Want puzzles on your phone? Layton: Curious Village in HD.
  • Want something different? The World Ends with You, or Radiant Historia.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best DS game ever made?

It depends how you measure. By Metacritic score, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars leads at 93, then Chrono Trigger at 92 and Mario Kart DS at 91. By sales, New Super Mario Bros. leads with 30.8 million. If you want one safe pick for almost anyone, play Mario Kart DS.

What is the most popular game on the DS?

New Super Mario Bros. is the best-selling DS game, at 30.80 million copies. Next are Nintendogs at 23.96 million (all versions), Mario Kart DS at 23.60 million, and Brain Age at 19.01 million, according to Wikipedia's list. The DS itself sold 154.02 million systems by March 31, 2016.

What are the top 20 Nintendo DS games?

Metacritic's top 10 for the DS, as of November 1, 2026, are Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Flipnote Studio, Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, New Super Mario Bros., and Meteos. 19 of Metacritic's top 20 are in our 50. The one we left out is Flipnote Studio, which is an app. See the quick picks and the critic score chart above for the rest.

Which Nintendo DS is best for playing DS games?

A 3DS-family system plays nearly every DS game, according to Nintendo, except a few that need the GBA slot. DS and DSi games do not show in 3D. The DS Lite has a GBA slot, and the DSi and DSi XL do not, so a DS or DS Lite is the pick if you also want GBA games.

Can you play DS games on a 3DS?

Yes. Nintendo says all Nintendo DS games are compatible with Nintendo 3DS family systems, except a few that need the GBA slot. DS and DSi games do not display in 3D, and they do not support StreetPass or SpotPass.

Can you still buy DS games new?

Not from Nintendo. Nintendo ended purchases in the Wii U and 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023. You can still redownload what you already bought. For DS games, you buy used carts or an official remake or port.

Which Nintendo DS games are on Android?

Seven of our 50 picks have an official Android version on Google Play: Professor Layton and the Curious Village and Unwound Future, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (as Ace Attorney Trilogy), Ghost Trick, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V, and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Layton: Diabolical Box and Dragon Quest VI are on Play too. The World Ends with You: Solo Remix was removed in July 2023.

Can I play DS games on my Android phone with an emulator?

Yes. DS emulators are legal, but you must use game files dumped from carts you own. We do not link to ROM sites. See our DS and 3DS emulator guide for the app we recommend. Test microphone games first, because the melonDS for Android README does not mention microphone support.

Can you still play DS games online?

No. Most Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection functions ended worldwide on May 20, 2014. Local wireless still works between DS systems in the same room, and some games, like Mario Kart DS, can start a race from one cart.

Which Pokémon DS game is best?

By Metacritic, HeartGold and SoulSilver and Black and White both score 87, Diamond and Pearl score 85, Platinum scores 83, and Black 2 and White 2 score 80. By sales, Diamond and Pearl lead with 17.67 million, then Black and White at 15.64 million and HeartGold and SoulSilver at 12.72 million. Pick HeartGold or SoulSilver for Johto and Kanto together, or Black or White for a story with only new Pokémon.

What are the best DS games for kids and for adults?

For young kids, start with Mario Kart DS, New Super Mario Bros., Yoshi's Island DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, and Nintendogs, all rated E. For adults, try Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Ghost Trick, and The World Ends with You, rated Teen, or Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, rated Mature.
