Best DS and 3DS Emulators for Android 2026: melonDS, Azahar

The best DS emulator for Android in 2026 is melonDS. Install it from Google Play (me.magnum.melonds). Version 2.0.1 landed 5 May 2026. The best 3DS emulator is Azahar 2126.1.1, updated on Play 11 September 2026. WatermelonDS 0.7.0 is the GitHub DS fork if you want Vulkan and a second screen. SeedlessDS 1.0.0-beta1 is the DraStic-core app if melonDS crawls on a weak 64-bit handheld. DraStic is still fast on old phones, but its Play page 404’d when we opened it on 15 September 2026. None of these apps ship games. Dump a cart you own.

DS vs 3DS: they are not the same emulator

A DS emulator runs Nintendo DS and (if you dump extra files) DSi software. A 3DS emulator runs Nintendo 3DS software. They are different chips, different carts, different apps.

• Pokemon Black / White / Platinum → DS. Use melonDS.
• Pokemon X / Y / Omega Ruby / Sun → 3DS. Use Azahar.
• Mario Kart DS is DS. Mario Kart 7 is 3DS.
• A file named “Pokemon Scarlet.nds” is a fake. Scarlet never shipped on DS or 3DS.

This page stays on Android. On a PC, people use desktop melonDS and Azahar. Mixing the two is how thin lists dodge the actual query: the phone in your hand.

How we checked this (15 September 2026)

We compared this query’s current ranking pages on 15 September 2026. These errors keep showing up.

Is melonDS the best DS emulator for Android?

Yes, for a first install. melonDS on Android is Rafael V. Caetano’s port of the PC emulator. It is free. It is on Play. Data safety says no data shared, no data collected. WatermelonDS and SeedlessDS exist for handhelds. They are not the default Play button.

Play “What’s new” for 2.0.1:

• Custom layouts can sit in the display cutout
• OpenGL renderer is faster in most cases
• Crash fixes

2.0.0 (18 April 2026) is the bigger jump:

• Core updated to melonDS 1.1
• Dual-screen devices (code from SapphireRhodonite; AYANEO and AYN lent test units)
• RetroAchievements work
• Rumble Pak
• DSiWare from the ROM list
• Lower audio latency
• Save states from older melonDS Android builds do not load in 2.0.0. Use in-game saves before you update if you are still on 1.x

That last line is the one almost every list skips. Updating can look like a wiped save. It is not. You used a state file the new core will not eat.

Where to get melonDS (and nowhere else)

• Play: me.magnum.melonds

• Nightlies exist. Keep them beside the Play app if you like living on the edge. Do not replace a working 2.0.1 with a random APK blog file named “melonDS Gold”.

BIOS: skip it for DS, do not skip it for DSi

The Play listing says some systems need dumps from a real unit. The project wiki is clearer:

• DS games: custom BIOS is optional on this Android port. Most people just pick a folder of .nds dumps and play.
• DSi mode: required. You need two folders, because the file names collide.

DS folder: bios7.bin (16 KB), bios9.bin (4 KB), firmware.bin (128 / 256 / 512 KB).

DSi folder: bios7.bin and bios9.bin (64 KB each), firmware.bin (128 KB), nand.bin (about 240 MB).

Dump those from a DS, DSi, or 3DS you own. We will not name a BIOS pack site. Empty 0-byte files are a bad dump, not a missing setting.

Best for: first DS install, Pokemon Gen 4–5, Mario Kart DS. Skip if: you only have 3DS carts — this will not boot them.

WatermelonDS: the DS fork ranking pages still call melonDualDS

WatermelonDS 0.7.0 shipped 8 August 2026. It used to be named melonDualDS. If a 2026 blog still says melonDualDS, they have not read the release note.

It sits on the same melonDS Android base, then adds:

• Vulkan renderer (and an experimental FastPath for high internal res)
• RetroArch shader presets on every renderer
• External display (TV, dock, second panel) with touch still on the handheld
• RetroAchievements, including an offline path
• Adrenotools on the GitHub flavor

The 0.7.0 APK is about 26.1 MB. Get it from github.com/SapphireRhodonite/WatermelonDS. FastPath is called out as extremely beta. Use normal Vulkan or OpenGL until a game you know holds speed.

Best for: dual-screen Android handhelds, upscale, a TV as the top screen. Skip if: you want one tap from Play and no sideload. Use melonDS.

Is DraStic gone from Google Play?

DraStic (Exophase) was the DS app people named for a decade. It ran full speed on chips that made melonDS crawl. That part is still true on phones that already have it.

What changed:

• Exophase made it free in 2024 and talked about leaving Play and opening the source.
• The Play listing vanished around 13–15 February 2025.
• The source drop did not arrive. Community threads in 2026 still wait.
• Last widely mirrored build: r2.6.0.4a.
• On 15 September 2026 we requested https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dsemu.drastic and got 404.

If DraStic is already in your Play library from years ago, it may still reinstall from your library. That is not the same as a public listing. Do not hunt “DraStic full ROM pack” APKs. The speed is not worth a stolen signing key.

Layout gripe that never died: the menu button sits on the picture in landscape. melonDS lets you build a layout. That is why people with flagship phones left DraStic even before the delist.

Best for: a Galaxy S7-class chip that already has DraStic. Skip if: you are installing DS for the first time in 2026. Use melonDS, or SeedlessDS on a 64-bit handheld.

SeedlessDS: DraStic speed, new UI, GitHub beta

SeedlessDS 1.0.0-beta1 shipped 8 August 2026. Same author as WatermelonDS. The name is a joke: watermelon with the seeds taken out.

The emulation core is still DraStic r2.6.0.4a. Everything around it is new: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, dual-screen presets, RetroAchievements, a library that looks like WatermelonDS. That is why it exists. melonDS is heavy on some cheap 64-bit handhelds. DraStic’s Play page is gone.

• GitHub only. Not on Play.
• arm64-v8a only. Android 5+. 32-bit phones cannot install it.
• Controller-first UI. Dual-screen presets (the README names Sonic Rush as the stacked-screen test).
• RetroAchievements via rcheevos v12.3.0. Still being tested.
• Not affiliated with Exophase. The long-term plan is a public core. That has not shipped. License is “not chosen yet.”

This is not a “DraStic full ROM pack” APK from a blog. If a file already contains Pokemon, skip it.

Best for: a weak 64-bit Android handheld that crawls in melonDS. Skip if: you have a normal modern phone — Play melonDS is simpler. Skip if you need 32-bit: keep old DraStic, or stay on GBA.

Azahar: the only 3DS emulator you should install

Azahar is Citra after the funeral. Lime3DS and PabloMK7’s Citra fork merged in October 2024. The name means orange blossom. Citra was the orange. First stable Azahar was 2120 on 21 March 2025.

Official site: azahar-emu.org. GitHub: azahar-emu/azahar (8,100+ stars when we checked).

Play listing: io.github.lime3ds.android. That package ID is why old Lime3DS bookmarks still open Azahar. 3.6 stars from about 5,200 reviews. A lot of 1-stars are people whose .3ds files vanished from the list. See the rename below.

Project floor (from the README, not a guess):

• Android 10+, 64-bit
• Snapdragon 835 or better
• OpenGL ES 3.2 or Vulkan 1.1
• 2 GB RAM minimum, 4 GB recommended

2126.1 and 2126.1.1 — the September 2026 patches

2126.1 (9 September 2026) is the useful one. Highlights that hit Android:

• Save states are locked to the Azahar version that made them. Load a foreign state and you get an error, not a crash. Use in-game saves before you jump versions.
• Vulkan crash when textures died mid-frame. Named victim: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate at mission start.
• Smash Bros. 4 character select lag.
• Friends list crash.
• About 0.5–1 ms less GPU command work per frame (project note).
• SEGA 3D Classics no longer need as many per-game patches (other bugs remain).
• Home Menu audio crackle.
• Android target SDK moved from 15 to 17.
• Rotation / suspend / boot surface crashes.
• Invalid dumps now show an “Invalid ROM” card instead of a blank row.

2126.1.1 (11 September 2026) is the hot-fix:

• Instant crash on some poor Vulkan devices
• MH4U crash after opening the equipment menu
• “Skip presenting duplicate frames” turned off by default after it caused small regressions

Play “What’s new” points at 2126.1.1. GitHub also ships a Vanilla APK (~47.8 MB). The project says Vanilla’s file access is faster, but Play forbids that method. Most people should stay on Play for updates. Handheld tinkerers can sideload Vanilla with Obtainium.

Rename .3ds to .cci or Azahar will look empty

This is the #1 3DS support ticket in 2025–2026. Azahar dropped the .3ds extension. The real name of that dump format is .cci. Same bytes. New suffix.

On the phone: long-press the file → rename → change .3ds to .cci. Do not download a converter APK.

System files: Artic Setup Tool, your 3DS, not a zip from a stranger

Full 3DS setup wants console files from hardware you own. Azahar’s path is the Artic Setup Tool homebrew on a real 3DS with Luma3DS 13.3.1 or newer. You run it on the handheld, then type that IP into Azahar.

We will not walk a 3DS hack from zero. If you do not own a 3DS, you do not have a clean dump path. We will not point you at a “AES keys.bin pack.”

Wi-Fi multiplayer rooms (since 2126.0)

Azahar 2126.0 (10 August 2026) added Android multiplayer rooms: public browse, private create/join, and chat. Phones need the same Wi-Fi, or the Android hotspot. This is not StreetPass. This is not a 3DS in the other room. Official public rooms are not hosted by Azahar. A custom web API URL is a power-user field, not day-one homework.

Azahar vs AzaharPlus: do not switch by default

Reddit will say AzaharPlus. It is a fork: AzaharPlus/AzaharPlus. Latest we opened: 2126.0-A on 19 July 2026. Official Azahar is 2126.1.1 (11 September 2026). Plus is behind on the MH4U and Smash 4 fixes.

Plus extra, from its own release note:

• Old Citra file names still load
• A menu that can download system files from official servers, with no 3DS in the room
• Android 9
• Built-in cheats and Amiibo generation
• Two Android APKs: one replaces Azahar, one is named +AzaharPlus+ and sits beside it

Do not make Plus your default. Official Azahar dropped the .3ds name on purpose. We will not walk the “download system files from Nintendo servers” path. If you already run Plus, know you missed 2126.1.1. Stay on Play Azahar unless you have a reason we did not list.

Best for: every 3DS cart you actually own. Skip if: your phone is below Snapdragon 835-class. Use DS, GBA, or PSP instead.

Does Citra still work in 2026?

Nintendo sued the Yuzu team. The settlement in March 2024 was about $2.4 million and Yuzu shut down. Citra came from the same shop, so Citra’s official builds stopped too.

Forks popped up. Two that mattered: Lime3DS and PabloMK7 Citra. On 30 October 2024 they agreed to stop splitting work. Azahar is that merge. Lime3DS 2119 was a goodbye note.

Old Citra MMJ APKs still float. So do “Citra with 5000 games” store clones. Treat them like DamonPS2 in our PS2 guide: closed, stale, often nasty. Azahar is the continuation people actually patch. Lime3DS as a new install is the same dead tree: the Play package ID is Azahar now.

Can you play Pokemon, Zelda, Smash, or Monster Hunter?

People type the game, not the emulator. Honest version. No invented fps.

• Pokemon Diamond / Pearl / Platinum / HGSS / Black / White / B2W2. DS. melonDS. For Action Replay codes on Black 2 see our Black 2 cheat page. SoulSilver: SoulSilver codes.
• Pokemon X / Y / ORAS / Sun / Moon. 3DS. Azahar. These are not DS ROMs. A 40 MB “Pokemon Y.nds” is junk.
• Mario Kart DS. melonDS. Touch for items is fine. A pad helps.
• Mario Kart 7 / Smash Bros. 4. Azahar. 2126.1 specifically cut character-select lag in Smash 4.
• Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Update to Azahar 2126.1.1. Older 2126 builds had named Vulkan crashes at mission start and in the equipment menu.
• The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass / Spirit Tracks. DS. Stylus is the game. Do not hide the bottom screen.
• Ocarina of Time 3D / Majora’s Mask 3D / A Link Between Worlds. 3DS. Azahar. Gyroscope puzzles want the phone’s gyro, not only a Bluetooth pad.
• Animal Crossing: New Leaf / Happy Home Designer. 3DS. Long sessions. In-game saves, not only states.

A real DS dump is tens to hundreds of MB. A real 3DS dump is usually gigabytes. If the zip is smaller than a song, it is not the game.

Two screens are the real UX problem

Speed is solved on a modern phone. Layout is not. The DS and 3DS are two panels. Your phone is one.

• Portrait, stacked. Closest to a real handheld. Use this for Zelda DS, Brain Age, anything that lives on the stylus.
• Landscape, big top / small bottom. 3D games (Mario Kart, MH4U). Swap when the game flips its “main” screen.
• One screen only, tap to swap. Fine for cutscenes. Bad for Phantom Hourglass.
• Second display. WatermelonDS can throw the top screen at a TV or the other panel on a dual-screen handheld. Touch stays on the device in your hands. melonDS 2.0.0 also learned dual-screen hardware.

Microphone games (Nintendogs, some music titles): a Play review on melonDS 2.0.1 said the device mic lagged hard, and the “blow” option fixed it. Try that before you blame the core.

A Bluetooth pad is extra, not a replacement, when the game is a stylus game. For 3D, pair a DualSense with Create + PS.

Lemuroid and RetroArch: only if you already live there

Google’s AI Overview still names these two. Fair. They are real Play apps. They are not the first DS or 3DS install.

Lemuroid (com.swordfish.lemuroid) is the friendly all-in-one. The listing includes NDS and even 3DS. The 19 April 2026 notes added a DS microphone. For GBA and Sega it is a great first app — see our GBA guide and Sega guide. For DS, melonDS still gets the layout work. For 3DS, use Azahar standalone. Lemuroid listing 3DS does not make it the 3DS pick.

RetroArch (com.retroarch) is the power-user front end. DS cores exist. Azahar also ships a libretro core. The Android UI, dual-screen layouts, and 2126.1.1 crash fixes land in standalone Azahar first. Start there. Come back to RetroArch if you already live in it.

Skip these in 2026

• Any APK with games inside. Real emulators ship empty.
• Citra, Citra MMJ, “Citra Android 2026” from a blog. Use Azahar.
• Lime3DS as a new install. The Play package is Azahar now. Old Lime APKs will not get 2126.1.1.
• AzaharPlus as the default 3DS app. Fork. Behind 2126.1.1. We will not use its system-file download menu.
• Random DraStic mirrors. Library reinstall only. Want that core on a 64-bit handheld? SeedlessDS from GitHub, not a ROM-stuffed clone.
• Play Store search for WatermelonDS / melonDualDS / SeedlessDS. GitHub only.
• SuperNDS (com.supernds.free / .pro), 33DDSS (com.emulator.dsss), Super3DS / SuperDS64, EmuBox (com.emulator.box.aio). Clone/ad lists that pad “8 best emulators” articles.
• Panda3DS or Mandarine/Mandarin as pick #1 on a phone. Not the Android 3DS default in 2026.
• RetroArch as your first 3DS app. Standalone Azahar first.
• Delta, Manic Emu. Those are iOS.

Will your phone run DS or 3DS?

DS is cheap. 3DS is not. Use this as a floor, not a promise:

Heat is the silent limiter. A phone in a case after 20 minutes of MH4U is not the README’s Snapdragon 835. Our overheating fixes apply: case off, 60 Hz, short sessions.

RAM: 4 GB is the real 3DS comfort line. 6–8 GB is better. DS is happy with less.

Dumps, BIOS, and the line we will not cross

The emulator is legal. The files are the line. US courts treated emulation software as lawful in cases like Sony v. Connectix (2000). That does not make a folder of other people’s Pokemon carts lawful.

30 September 2026: the sideload clock

WatermelonDS and SeedlessDS are GitHub-only. Azahar Vanilla is GitHub-first. Google’s developer verification starts 30 September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, then spreads. The advanced sideload flow can add a Developer-options toggle and a 24-hour wait the first time you install an unverified app. We walk through that in Android’s sideloading advanced flow.

If you live in those countries and you want WatermelonDS or SeedlessDS this month, install the GitHub APK before the night you need it. melonDS and Azahar on Google Play skip that wait.

How to set up the best DS or 3DS emulator on Android

1. Pick the system. DS cart → melonDS. 3DS cart → Azahar. Dual-screen handheld → add WatermelonDS later. Weak 64-bit handheld → SeedlessDS, not a DraStic clone APK.
2. Install from the real listing. melonDS: me.magnum.melonds. Azahar: io.github.lime3ds.android. Do not install a Play clone that already contains Pokemon.
3. Dump a cart you own. Copy the dump to a folder (Downloads/DS or Downloads/3DS is fine). 3DS: rename .3ds to .cci.
4. Point the app at that folder. Wait for the scan. A blank 3DS list is usually the extension, not a broken APK.
5. Leave renderer defaults first. melonDS: OpenGL at 1× or 2×. Azahar: Vulkan unless it crashes, then OpenGL. Do not turn on WatermelonDS FastPath on day one.
6. Set a layout. Portrait stacked for stylus games. Landscape big-top for Kart and hunters. Keep the bottom screen tappable.
7. Save in-game. melonDS 2.0.0 states do not load in 1.x. Azahar 2126.1+ states do not load in older Azahar. States are extra lives, not your only copy.
8. Optional. DSi mode: two BIOS folders from hardware you own. 3DS system files: Artic Setup Tool on a 3DS you own. Pad: DualSense on Android.

Keep DraStic only if it is already in your library — new users hit a 404. The best 3DS emulator is Azahar 2126.1.1, not AzaharPlus and not Citra. Rename .3ds to .cci. Do not install a “games included” APK.

Do this next: install melonDS or Azahar from the official Play listing, dump one cart you own, and confirm an in-game save works before you start a 40-hour Pokemon file. If Azahar shows an empty list, rename the extension. If you only wanted GBA, you are on the wrong page — go to the GBA list.
