The best PPSSPP games in 2026 are God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Mega Man Powered Up. You play them on PPSSPP, which is free on Google Play with no ads and no in-app purchases, updated to v1.20.4 on 16 May 2026. The emulator ships with zero games, so every pick below assumes you supply your own legal copy.

Most pages on this query are broken in one of two ways. Some list games that were never made for the PSP at all — a page ranking today recommends “GTA 5 PPSSPP” and “God of War Ragnarok PPSSPP”, neither of which exists. The rest describe real games but never say whether the game runs on your phone, how big the file is, or where the file is supposed to come from.

We fixed all three. You get a grade per game from PPSSPP’s own crowd-report database, three settings profiles taken from PPSSPP’s official documentation rather than copied off another blog, and a legal-sourcing section that names no ROM site because it does not need one.

How our compatibility grades work (and where they come from)

Every game on this page carries one of five labels. They come from PPSSPP’s own crowd-sourced compatibility report database, which the emulator uploads to when players opt in.

• Perfect — reports cluster on full speed with no visible bugs across several different GPUs.
• Playable — it finishes, it looks right, but reports show frame drops in specific scenes or on mid-range chips.
• Issues — reports contradict each other on similar hardware, or a known effect renders wrong.
• Broken — recent reports stop at the menu or fail to boot at all.
• Unrated — we could not find enough current reports to put a number on it. We say so instead of guessing.

Three honest caveats, because this is the part every other page skips. The database is crowd-sourced and nobody moderates it, so a single bad report is one person’s phone, not a verdict.

Grades also move with the PPSSPP build. A large share of the “doesn’t boot” entries in the database were filed on builds from 2016 to 2020 — v1.3.0.1, v1.6.3, v1.9.0, v1.11.3 — not on the current 1.20.4. Update the app before you blame the game.

And the same game can grade differently on two phones with the same chip. When that happens, the file is usually the problem, not the emulator. We come back to that in the under 500MB section, because it is the single most useful thing on this page.

How we picked (26 August 2026)

• The game had to actually exist on the PSP. That sounds like a low bar. It rules out nine of the fourteen picks on the page currently ranking for this query.
• Compatibility from PPSSPP’s crowd-report database, read in August 2026, graded on the five labels above. Where the data is thin or contradictory, the entry says so.
• Genre spread on purpose. Action, open world, RPG, tactics, co-op hunting, fighting, racing, puzzle, platforming and horror. Our first draft had six racing games and no horror at all, so we cut three racers.
• A legal path to the file. Every pick can be dumped from a disc you own, or copied off a PSP you already own. We link no ROM site and we name none.
• A note on the modern re-release wherever one exists, because for a lot of these games buying the remaster is the better answer than emulating.
• App facts from the live Google Play listings on 26 August 2026: price, the “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases” flags, the update date, the install band and the score.

What we did not do. We did not personally run all 32 games on a rack of test phones. Nobody who publishes a list this size has, and the ones who claim it are not telling you the truth.

Our test device work covers PPSSPP itself, the settings profiles, and the Android storage setup. The per-game grades are read from the community database and labelled as such. That is the honest split, and it is why the “Unrated” label exists.

Grouped by genre. Each entry lists the compatibility grade, the disc ID where we could verify it, whether a legal modern version exists, and whether you need a gamepad.

One note on disc IDs. Region and disc revision genuinely change how a game runs, and the ID PPSSPP prints beside the game in its list is the fastest way to tell what you actually have. Where two sources disagreed on an ID, we left it out rather than print a number you might match against the wrong file.

Action and adventure

1. God of War: Ghost of Sparta

Grade: Playable · Disc ID UCUS98737 · Dual-layer UMD · No modern re-release · Gamepad strongly recommended.

This is the best-looking thing on the PSP and the reason people install an emulator in the first place. Ready at Dawn built a full God of War on a handheld with one analogue nub and it still moves at a proper pace. On a recent Snapdragon it scales to 3x rendering without complaint.

The catch is the spread in the reports. The same flagship-class GPU shows up as both Perfect and stuck-at-the-intro in the same week, which almost always means somebody is running a stripped, re-encoded file rather than a clean dump. The quick-time-event prompts are also miserable on touch.

Best for: a modern phone and a Bluetooth pad. Skip if: your phone is mid-range Mali and you have no controller.

2. God of War: Chains of Olympus

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID UCUS98653 · Dual-layer UMD · No modern re-release · Gamepad strongly recommended.

The first PSP God of War and the more reliable of the two under emulation. The USA, Europe, Asia and South East Asia discs all sit at Perfect in the database; only the Japanese release drops to in-game. Kratos in a shorter, tighter campaign is a good fit for phone sessions.

It leans hard on GPU readbacks, so weak Mali and PowerVR parts either crawl or lose effects. Turning on “Skip buffer effects” will fix the speed and delete the blood, the fog and the Medusa gaze along with it.

Best for: your first PPSSPP game on a decent phone. Skip if: you only have the Japanese disc.

3. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10509 · No gamepad, no chance · Legal modern version: yes, from 27 August 2026.

A mainline Metal Gear Solid built for a handheld, with base management, co-op missions and Kojima’s full script. The USA, European and Japanese retail discs are all rated Perfect. On a phone the mission-sized structure works better than any console MGS.

The timing here is almost comic. Konami’s Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 lands on PS5, Xbox Series, Steam, Switch and Switch 2 on 27 August 2026 — the day after this article publishes — with Peace Walker based on the HD Collection build.

Disc revision also matters more here than anywhere else. The Japanese v1.03 disc and the demo builds are rated menu-only or worse.

Best for: anyone who wants the whole Snake story on the phone. Skip if: you own a PS5 or a Switch. Buy the collection.

4. Daxter

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID UCUS98618 · No modern re-release at all · Gamepad recommended.

The best 3D platformer on the system, and Ready at Dawn’s other PSP triumph. The most recent report on the current build comes back Perfect. It is bright, fast, and it holds up better than most PS2-era platformers do.

Daxter has never been re-released on anything, so a disc is the only route. Older mobile GPUs and a couple of desktop chips still throw failures in the database, and camera control on touch is rough because the PSP had one nub.

Best for: platformer fans with a controller. Skip if: you want to play one-handed.

5. Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters

Grade: Unrated · Disc ID UCUS98633 · No modern re-release · Gamepad required.

A genuine mainline Ratchet game built by High Impact, and the other showpiece platformer next to Daxter. Weapon upgrades, arena challenges, the whole loop, on a handheld. Any “best PSP games” list that leaves it out was written by someone who never owned the console.

We are marking it Unrated on purpose: we could not pull enough current reports to grade it honestly, so test your own copy before you commit an evening. A PS2 port from 2008 exists but is long out of print and on no modern store, so there is no legal alternative.

Best for: Ratchet fans. Skip if: you want a guarantee it runs on your chip.

6. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

Grade: Issues · Disc ID UCUS98641 · No modern re-release · Gamepad recommended.

Bend Studio’s stealth shooter is the game with the most current emulator news attached to it. PPSSPP 1.20 restored ad hoc multiplayer in the Syphon Filter games, and 1.20.4 in May 2026 fixed a lens-flare bug caused by wrong backface culling. That is a dated, specific fix you can see for yourself.

Reports are thin and they disagree: one PowerVR chip plays it, a near-identical one stops at the menu. Precise aiming on a touchscreen is also a compromise here in a way it is not in an isometric game.

Best for: stealth fans who like the co-op angle. Skip if: you need a safe bet.

7. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10450 · No modern re-release · Gamepad optional.

The PSP cut of the Wii reimagining, and it carries the strongest recent compatibility record on this page: several Perfect and Playable reports across Mali and Adreno chips in August 2026. It is also the only horror game most PSP lists forget entirely. PPSSPP 1.20 shipped a fix for a Shattered Memories save data bug, which tells you people are still playing it.

The chase sequences are the whole point of the game and they are exactly where mid-range hardware drops frames. It is also short, five to six hours, and the Wii original is the better-looking version.

Best for: a weekend, in the dark, with headphones. Skip if: you want a long game.

Open world

8. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10041 · A native Android port has existed — check Google Play first · Gamepad optional.

The PSP GTA that actually exists, and the one PPSSPP has visibly worked on this year: version 1.20.4, released 16 May 2026, fixed a GTA crash that appeared when the game was modded with higher-polygon assets. Multiple Perfect reports across Mali and PowerVR hardware back it up. Liberty City on a phone still works.

Rockstar has also shipped a native Android port of this game in the past. We could not verify the state of that listing for this article, so open Google Play and look before you build an emulator setup for it. Most of the failing reports in the database are on PPSSPP builds from 2018 to 2021, not on the current one.

Best for: a 20-hour crime story offline. Skip if: the native port is sitting on the store for a few dollars.

9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10160 · No modern re-release · Gamepad optional.

The better of the two PSP GTAs and the one that never got a mobile port, which makes it the genuinely emulator-only pick. Recent reports on flagship Adreno and Mali chips come back Perfect on 1.20.4. Empire-building missions give it more structure than Liberty City Stories.

Mid-range Mali remains the weak spot — the same recent batch of reports includes two menu-only results. Radio-station licensing also means the tracklist differs between regional discs, so your memory of a song may not match your copy.

Best for: the best PSP open-world game, full stop. Skip if: your phone is an entry-level Mali device.

10. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Grade: Unrated · No modern re-release we could confirm · Gamepad optional.

The third PSP GTA, which almost every list forgets. The 2010 PSP release expanded on the DS original, and the top-down camera makes it the most phone-friendly Grand Theft Auto ever made. The drug-trading economy is still one of the smartest systems Rockstar has shipped.

Its Android port was delisted from Google Play years ago and the iOS version is gone too, so check the store yourself rather than trusting an old article. The stylus-derived minigames map awkwardly to PSP buttons, and we could not find enough current reports to grade it.

Best for: people who want GTA without a camera to fight. Skip if: you dislike top-down driving.

Role-playing games

11. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10336 · Dual-layer UMD · Legal modern version: Reunion · Gamepad optional.

One of the cleanest big-budget PSP games under emulation. Every European disc revision in the database is rated Perfect, and the most recent report we found on 1.20.4 is Perfect too. Zack’s story still lands, and the mission structure suits short sessions.

Square Enix released Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion in December 2022 on PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch and Steam, with rebuilt combat and new voice work. That makes the PSP disc a preservation choice, not the best way to play it. The DMW slot-reel effect also shows its seams at high internal resolution.

Best for: preservation, or players who prefer the original combat. Skip if: you can buy Reunion.

12. Persona 3 Portable

Grade: Playable · Disc ID ULUS10512 · Legal modern version: yes, since January 2023 · Gamepad optional.

Menu-driven, 2D-heavy and text-first, which makes it close to an ideal phone game — especially with the portrait interface PPSSPP added in the 1.20 series. Its report page is one of the busiest in the database, with fresh entries across Mali-G31, Mali-G57 and Adreno 610.

Those budget-chip reports skew Playable rather than Perfect, and the culprit is nearly always the pre-rendered anime cutscenes rather than the game itself. Atlus put P3P on Switch, PS4, Xbox, Game Pass and Steam in January 2023, so the legal copy is cheap and everywhere. It is also a 60 to 100 hour game.

Best for: commuters with a long attention span. Skip if: cutscene stutter would ruin it for you.

13. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep

Grade: Playable · Legal modern version: yes, inside HD 2.8 · Gamepad recommended.

Story-critical for the series and one of the most technically impressive PSP releases, with three separate campaigns. The European and Japanese discs are both rated Perfect in the database, and Android reports on Mali-G52 and Mali-G57 come back Perfect or Playable.

This is the clearest example of a game that hates specific platforms: nearly every iOS report on file fails to boot, and one budget Adreno chip does the same. It is also fully superseded — the Final Mix version ships inside Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 on PS4, Xbox, Switch and Steam.

Best for: Android users filling a story gap. Skip if: you own HD 2.8 already.

14. Ys Seven

Grade: Playable · Disc ID ULUS10551 · Legal modern version: yes, on Steam and GOG · Gamepad recommended.

Falcom’s party-based action RPG runs better than almost anything of its scope on the PSP. On flagship Adreno hardware it is consistently rated Perfect, which is rare for a game this busy. Combat is fast and the dungeons are short, so it fits phone sessions well.

Drop to mid-range and it falls off quickly, with menu-only and in-game results on Mali-G52 and Samsung Xclipse parts. Ys Seven also has an official PC release on Steam and GOG for a few dollars, which is the strongest “just buy it” case in this whole article.

Best for: flagship phones. Skip if: you have a PC. Buy it there.

15. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC

Grade: Unrated · Legal modern version: yes, remade in 2025 · Gamepad optional.

The PSP original of the game Falcom is remaking right now. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter launched on 19 September 2025 for PS5, Switch, Switch 2 and Steam, and 2nd Chapter is dated for the fiscal year ending September 2026. That makes the PSP disc the archival version of a series in active revival.

It is text-dense, and small UI text on a phone screen is a real problem rather than a nitpick. We could not grade it against current reports, and it is a 50-hour game before you reach the sequel.

Best for: series completionists. Skip if: you want to start with the remake, which you probably should.

16. The 3rd Birthday

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10567 · No modern re-release · Gamepad recommended.

The Parasite Eve sequel in all but name, with a real-time squad-possession mechanic nothing else copies. It is also quietly one of the best low-end picks here: the database carries a Perfect report on an Adreno 506, which is a 2016-era budget GPU. Technically it should not run this well.

The catch is the game, not the emulation. The story is widely thought to have wrecked Aya Brea as a character, and the Overdive mechanic plus one-nub aiming means a controller is close to mandatory. Square Enix has never re-released it.

Best for: budget phones that still want a real action game. Skip if: you loved the original Parasite Eve.

Tactics and strategy

17. Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions

Grade: Issues · Disc ID ULUS10297 · Legal modern version: yes, since September 2025 · Gamepad optional.

The most requested tactical RPG on the platform, with the rewritten Ivalice script and the hand-drawn cutscenes. European and Japanese discs are rated Perfect in the database and one recent Adreno report is Playable.

Here is the fact almost every competitor gets wrong: the famous slowdown during attack and spell animations is a bug in the PSP game itself, not in PPSSPP. No setting fixes it, and patching your file is not something we are going to walk you through. The 2026 reports are also rough, with failures on Mali-G52 and in-game results on Mali-G57.

Best for: people who want the 2007 original exactly as it shipped. Skip if: you can buy The Ivalice Chronicles, released 30 September 2025, which carries the same script with the slowdown gone.

18. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10565 · Legal modern version: yes, Reborn · Gamepad optional.

Yasumi Matsuno’s other masterpiece, and unlike Final Fantasy Tactics it runs cleanly. The database shows Perfect results on desktop Intel graphics, on Adreno, and even on PPSSPP’s software renderer. Turn-based grid combat is also the genre that suffers least from touch controls.

Tactics Ogre: Reborn arrived in November 2022 on PS4, PS5, Switch and Steam with rebalanced combat, voice acting and a rewind system, so the PSP version is the archival choice. If you use a community texture pack, note PPSSPP’s own FAQ warning: on case-sensitive systems the pack folder name must be lowercase or it silently does nothing.

Best for: tactics fans who want the original balance. Skip if: you want the modern quality-of-life features.

Co-op hunting games

19. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite

Grade: Playable · Disc ID ULUS10391 · No modern re-release · Gamepad required.

The reason ad hoc multiplayer matters at all. PPSSPP’s own multiplayer documentation names the Monster Hunter series as a set of titles expected to work well over the new relay servers, which removed the port-forwarding problem that killed PSP co-op for most people.

Its compatibility record is worse than its reputation. Only a handful of reports exist and the trend runs menu-only, then in-game, then Playable across 2025 and 2026, all on Mali hardware. There is no Android port to fall back on, the claw grip is brutal on touch, and the difficulty curve is not nostalgia-proof.

Best for: two people with controllers and patience. Skip if: you are playing alone on a touchscreen.

20. Gods Eater Burst

Grade: Playable · Disc ID ULUS10563 · No modern re-release of this entry · Gamepad required.

The best Monster Hunter alternative on the platform, and it emulates noticeably better than Monster Hunter does. Reports land at Perfect on a desktop AMD chip and Playable on PowerVR and budget Adreno phones. The faster, anime-styled combat also suits a phone better than Monster Hunter’s deliberate pacing.

Results settle at Playable rather than Perfect on most Android hardware. It has documented bloom and glow rendering quirks in PPSSPP, so check that section of the graphics settings before you decide it looks wrong. Burst itself has never been re-released, though later God Eater games are on Steam and Switch.

Best for: anyone who bounced off Monster Hunter. Skip if: you need the co-op to work first time.

Fighting games

21. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection

Grade: Unrated · Disc ID ULUS10229 · No current-platform release · Gamepad required.

This is the fighting game to install, and Tekken 6 is the footnote. Dark Resurrection is widely held to be the best fighter on the PSP, it ran at a locked 60fps on real hardware, and it is a smaller single-layer disc than Tekken 6. It is also an ad hoc title, so it plugs straight into the relay-server section below.

We are grading it Unrated because we could not pull current report data for its disc ID, and we would rather say that than invent a number. Two hard rules for this game: frameskip above 0 destroys the input windows, and touch controls will not give you a single electric wind god fist.

Best for: a phone, a Bluetooth pad and a friend on the same network. Skip if: you have no controller.

22. Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX

Grade: Issues · Disc ID ULUS10062 · Legal modern version: partly · Gamepad required.

The most complete version of Alpha 3 ever released, with the largest roster in the series at the time. The 2D sprite work scales cleanly to 4x, which makes it one of the best-looking games here on a modern screen. One recent budget-Adreno report comes back Perfect.

Then newer hardware throws failures and menu-only results in the same month, which usually points at file quality rather than the chip. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 and the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection cover Alpha 3 legally, though not the MAX-exclusive roster.

Best for: Alpha 3 diehards who want the full roster. Skip if: a collection copy is good enough.

23. Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai

Grade: Unrated · Disc ID ULUS10081 · No legal digital version anywhere · Gamepad recommended.

A small 2.5D fighter that runs at full speed on almost any Android GPU. Shin Budokai and its sequel Another Road are genuinely well suited to short phone sessions. The sprite-over-3D presentation still looks sharp.

Two warnings, and they are the whole reason this entry exists. There is no legal digital route to this game on any platform, and Bandai Namco actively pursues sites hosting it. As a game it is also shallow next to the modern Dragon Ball fighters.

Best for: owners of the original disc. Skip if: you do not own it — buy Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero instead.

Racing and vehicular combat

24. Burnout Legends

Grade: Playable · Disc ID ULUS10025 · No modern re-release · Gamepad optional.

The best crash-racing on the platform and a strong mid-range pick. The database shows Perfect on Mali-G68 and repeated Playable results on Mali-G52 across mid-2026 on the current build. Crash mode in particular is perfect for two-minute phone sessions.

Criterion tuned the crash physics to 30fps, so pushing rendering resolution buys you nothing while the crash-cam slowdown still hammers weak GPUs. EA has never re-released it and the licensed soundtrack makes that unlikely. One failing 2026 report we checked was filed on a PPSSPP build from 2016.

Best for: short bursts on a mid-range phone. Skip if: you want simulation racing. Look at our Android racing game picks instead.

25. Ridge Racer

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10001 · No modern re-release · Gamepad optional.

Namco’s PSP launch title is still one of the smoothest things on the system, and PPSSPP’s multiplayer documentation names the Ridge Racer series as working well on the 1.20 relay ad hoc servers. Drifting is legible on touch in a way most racers are not. A recent report on an older Adreno chip is rated Perfect.

Ridge Racer 2 is the better version, with more tracks and cars, and it was Europe and Japan only, so US discs are the weaker package. The failing 2026 report in the database is on PPSSPP 1.9.0, a build from years ago.

Best for: arcade racing with a friend over ad hoc. Skip if: you want damage or open world.

26. WipEout Pulse

Grade: Playable · Disc ID UCUS98712 · No modern re-release · Gamepad recommended.

The best 2026-only story on this page. PPSSPP’s infrastructure-servers documentation says WipEout Pulse works well against community-run servers, which means a PSP game whose official online died over a decade ago can be played online again from an Android phone on PPSSPP 1.19 or newer.

Treat that as an enthusiast bonus, not a reason to install. Those are fan-run servers with no uptime promise, they need manual configuration inside PPSSPP, and PPSSPP’s own doc admits opponent ship textures render incorrectly.

Pulse is also brutally fast, so it needs the low-latency settings profile or it feels broken. WipEout Pure is the cleaner offline pick if you only want one.

Best for: people who will enjoy the setup as much as the racing. Skip if: you want it to just work.

27. Twisted Metal: Head-On

Grade: Unrated · Disc ID UCUS98615 · Not on any modern platform · Gamepad recommended.

A PSP exclusive built for short sessions and four-player ad hoc, which makes it a far better phone fit than a sixth racing sim. Car combat with a lock-on doing the aiming is one of the few 3D genres that survives one analogue nub. It is the local-multiplayer pick on this list.

A PS2 port called Extra Twisted Edition shipped in 2008, so “never re-released” is wrong — it is just on nothing current. We could not grade it against recent reports, so test before you plan a games night around it.

Best for: two phones on the same Wi-Fi. Skip if: you play alone.

Small, low-end and touch-friendly

28. LocoRoco

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID UCUS98662 · Legal modern version: PS4 remaster · No gamepad needed.

The honest answer to “which PPSSPP game runs on a cheap phone”. The whole game is two shoulder buttons, the art is flat vector work, and 4x rendering costs almost nothing because there is barely any geometry to draw. Reports come back Perfect on modest Mali chips and on handheld PC hardware.

Because it is two buttons, a controller adds nothing — this is a genuine touch game, which is rare here. Old failing reports on Mali-400 and Mali-G76 were filed on PPSSPP builds from before 1.14, which is an update problem, not a game problem.

Best for: entry-level phones and anyone without a pad. Skip if: you want a challenge.

29. Patapon

A rhythm-strategy game where you drum four-beat commands to march an army, and it is still unlike anything else. Reports show Perfect on both mid-range Mali and flagship Adreno chips on recent builds. The 2D vector art scales to any resolution without artefacts.

Rhythm is the one genre where default settings will betray you. PPSSPP’s own recommended-settings page tells you to use Vulkan, set buffered graphics commands to 1 or none, turn VSync off and try Force Real Clock Sync — miss that and the beat drifts out from under you. Bandai Namco also released Patapon 1+2 Replay in July 2025 on PS5, Switch and Steam.

Best for: anyone with a good pair of headphones. Skip if: you can buy Replay.

30. Mega Man Powered Up

Grade: Perfect · No modern re-release · No gamepad needed, but it helps.

This is our answer to “best PPSSPP game for a 2GB RAM phone”. It is a full remake of Mega Man 1 with a level editor, it is small, it is 2D, and it has one of the most reliable compatibility records in the whole database — Perfect results on budget Adreno and Mali chips filed in mid-2026 on the current build. Four buttons means touch actually works.

Its level-sharing feature relied on PSP servers that are gone, so the editor is local-only now. Capcom has never put it in a Mega Man Legacy Collection, so used discs cost silly money, and some players dislike the chibi art. Its sibling, Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, is just as safe a bet and just as stranded.

Best for: low-end phones and short sessions. Skip if: you want the original Mega Man art.

31. Lumines

Grade: Perfect · Disc ID ULUS10002 · Legal modern version: yes, Remastered and Arise · No gamepad needed.

The PSP launch puzzle game that defined the system, and one of the very few PSP titles that is better on a phone than on a console. It is tiny, it is timeless, and the recent Perfect reports we found are on handheld PC hardware rather than Android. Blocks fall, the timeline sweeps, the music does the rest.

Android data is sparse and mostly old, so treat the grade as a strong signal rather than a promise. It is also rhythm-locked, so it needs the same low-latency settings block as Patapon. Lumines Remastered from 2018 and Lumines Arise from 2025 are both on modern platforms and PC.

Best for: five-minute sessions with headphones. Skip if: you would rather buy Arise. You probably would.

32. Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles

Grade: Issues · Disc ID ULUS10277 · Legal modern version: partly · Gamepad recommended.

Three games on one small disc: the 2.5D Rondo of Blood remake, the unlockable original PC Engine Rondo of Blood, and the full Symphony of the Night. For an under-500MB question that is an absurd amount of game for the space. The 2D sprite art scales cleanly.

The compatibility picture is genuinely weak: the most recent reports we could find are from 2024 and 2025 and they sit at in-game rather than Perfect. The Symphony of the Night inside it runs in a PS1 emulation layer inside PSP emulation, which is the least reliable part of the package. Konami’s Castlevania collections cover most of this content legally, but not the 2.5D Rondo remake.

Best for: the Rondo remake, which exists nowhere else. Skip if: you only want Symphony of the Night.

Eight more that nearly made the list

• Killzone: Liberation — an isometric shooter that sidesteps the one-nub camera problem. Reports drop to in-game and menu-only on weaker chips, so it is not the safe low-end pick it looks like.
• Resistance: Retribution — the best solution to one-nub aiming on the system. Sony ended its online support on 5 May 2015 and there is no community revival, so treat it as single-player only.
• Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy — enormous, and unlike anything else on the platform. Camera-heavy 3D arena combat makes a gamepad mandatory, and the first Dissidia grades better if 012 misbehaves.
• Half-Minute Hero — 30-second RPG runs, small file, ideal phone shape. Its recent report data is thin enough that we will not print a grade, and the Steam version is trivial to buy.
• Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Impact — small, arcade-paced and a huge search term. No legal digital route exists; the Ultimate Ninja Storm collections on Switch, Steam and PS4 are the answer instead.
• Everybody’s Golf, sold as Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2 in North America — three-press swings that work fine on touch, tiny file, runs on anything.
• Tomb Raider: Anniversary — the PSP cut has extra areas, but Tomb Raider I-III Remastered from 2024 covers the same game on every current platform.
• Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands — a completely different 2.5D game from the console release. Reports split hard within months on similar hardware, and Ubisoft has delisted it everywhere.

Grades were read from PPSSPP’s public compatibility report database in August 2026 and use the five labels defined in the grades section. They are crowd-sourced, they move with each PPSSPP release, and they vary by GPU. Check PPSSPP’s report database for your own chip before you spend an evening on a dump.

Games that do not exist: the GTA 5 and God of War Ragnarok problem

There is no PSP version of GTA V, GTA IV, GTA: San Andreas, GTA: Vice City, God of War 1, 2 or 3, God of War: Ascension, or God of War Ragnarok. None of those games were ever released on the PlayStation Portable. A page currently ranking on the first result page for this query lists nine of them as PPSSPP games.

The PSP got exactly two God of War games: Chains of Olympus, disc ID UCUS98653, and Ghost of Sparta, disc ID UCUS98737. It got exactly three Grand Theft Autos: Liberty City Stories (ULUS10041), Vice City Stories (ULUS10160) and Chinatown Wars.

So what are people downloading? Mislabelled files. You can see the evidence in PPSSPP’s own public report database, which is visibly polluted with pirate repack entries carrying names like “EAFC KOMO”, “efootballsul”, “MYMAXFFNOVOS2026” and “GTA 5 LBORELLIMODS” sitting next to real disc IDs.

Those are re-skinned mods, console rips that will never boot, or malware wearing a famous name. If a file promises you a console game the PSP never had, it is one of those three things.

Why a 50MB “full game” is impossible

A UMD holds 900MB on a single layer and 1.8GB on a dual layer. That is the physical ceiling of the format, set when the disc was standardised by ECMA in 2005.

Two things follow. No PSP game has ever been larger than 1.8GB, so even the biggest titles here — both God of Wars, Peace Walker, Crisis Core — sit under that ceiling. We do not print a size per game, because the only honest number is the one your own dump reports.

And a file advertised as a 50MB or 100MB “highly compressed” version of one of those games is not compressed. It is re-encoded and stripped: audio downsampled, video cut out, assets removed. Those files are the single most common cause of the failures littering the compatibility database, and they are why one person’s Perfect is another person’s black screen on the same chip.

Where PPSSPP games legally come from

PPSSPP is a legal, open-source emulator, and it comes with no games. Its own Play Store listing says so: use your own real PSP games and turn them into ISO or CSO files, or play free homebrew. In 2026 there are exactly three lawful ways to get a file, and buying a PSP game from Sony is not one of them.

1. Dump a UMD you own. PPSSPP’s official dumping documentation describes the procedure: a PSP running custom firmware, a USB cable to a PC, press Select at the XMB, set USB Device to “UMD Disc”, choose USB Connection, then copy the virtual ISO off the mounted volume.

The custom firmware part is a hard requirement, not an optional extra — the “UMD Disc” option does not appear on stock firmware. Installing it is on you, and it voids the warranty on a console Sony stopped supporting long ago.

Also check which PSP you have. The PSP Go and the PSP Street, model E1000, have no UMD drive at all, so there is nothing to dump from them.

2. Copy digital games off a PSP you already own. If those games are still on the console, PPSSPP’s documentation says you can copy the folder containing the EBOOT.PBP file across and load it directly.

The docs note this path is less tested than plain ISO loading.

The limitation people get wrong is which downloads work. Files that never left a PSP are the ones to copy; PSP titles bought through the PS3 or Vita stores carry different protection and are not a reliable route.

3. Free homebrew and official demos. This one costs nothing and needs no disc — see the free legal games section below.

What is no longer possible: buying a PSP game. The PSP’s own PlayStation Store closed on 31 March 2016, and PSP commerce on the PS3 and Vita stores ended on 2 July 2021. Only re-downloads of content someone already bought still work, which means any article telling you to “just buy the digital version” is sending you to a shop that does not exist.

We are not going to name a ROM site, link one, or describe how to find one. Not out of politeness — those sites are also the ones serving the broken files and the fake “PPSSPP Gold with games included” APKs described in the do not bother section.

Buy the remaster instead: when emulating is the worse option

Roughly half the best PSP games now have a better, legal, modern version. If one exists, buying it is faster than dumping a disc and it will run properly on hardware you already own. Here is the honest column.

That leaves a short list of games you genuinely cannot play any other way. Ghost of Sparta, Chains of Olympus, Daxter, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, GTA: Vice City Stories, The 3rd Birthday, Mega Man Powered Up, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Twisted Metal: Head-On, Burnout Legends, Ridge Racer, WipEout Pulse, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Gods Eater Burst.

That is the most useful list on this page. If you are going to go through the work of dumping a disc, dump one of those.

One thing emulation gives you that no remaster does: RetroAchievements. PPSSPP supports them natively, and you switch them on with your account in the emulator’s settings.

PPSSPP best settings, split by genre (not one preset)

There is no single best PPSSPP settings preset, and every page that gives you one is wrong. PPSSPP’s own recommended settings documentation publishes three distinct profiles, because a rhythm game and a turn-based RPG want opposite things. Start with the shared rules, then pick your profile.

Vulkan or OpenGL: pick the backend first

Use Vulkan. PPSSPP’s docs call it the recommended backend on most devices where it is available, and every profile below assumes it.

Switch to OpenGL only if you hit a specific failure: white boxes where textures should be, shader compilation errors, or crashes on launch. That happens on some Mali drivers, and it is the one time the older backend is the right answer.

Two settings to leave alone, no matter what an older guide tells you. Never turn off Hardware Transform — PPSSPP’s documentation says it is for debugging only. And be careful with Lazy texture caching, which can break text rendering in games with a lot of it.

Profile 1: flagship phone, make it look good

• Backend: Vulkan.
• Rendering resolution: match your screen. 4x is the sensible target for a 1080p phone panel; 8x only makes sense on a 4K display.
• Texture filtering: Auto Max Quality.
• Texture scaling: try it, then judge it at the title screen. If loading stutters, turn it back off — upscaling is done on the fly and it costs.
• Speed hacks: all off. You do not need them and they cost you accuracy.
• MSAA: Vulkan-only and effectively a desktop feature. Do not go looking for it on a phone.

Profile 2: budget or old phone, make it run

• Rendering resolution: 1x or 2x. This is the single biggest lever you have.
• Post-processing shaders: off, all of them.
• Disable GPU readbacks: turn this on if a specific game crawls. It is the fix for the God of War-style slowdown, and it can break effects in other games, so set it per game.
• Software skinning: test both ways. It genuinely helps on some chips and hurts on others.
• Frameskip: last resort only, 1 or 2, and only in turn-based games. Never in a fighter, a racer or a rhythm game.
• Skip buffer effects: the true last resort. It buys a lot of speed and it deletes shadows, fog, blood and other screen effects.
• Sustained performance mode: worth turning on for long sessions, because thermal throttling will undo everything above.

Profile 3: rhythm, fighting and racing — the low-latency block

This is the profile nobody else publishes, and it is the opposite of the standard advice. Patapon, Lumines, LocoRoco, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and WipEout Pulse all need it.

• Backend: Vulkan.
• Buffer graphics commands: set to 1, or to No Buffer.
• VSync: off.
• Force Real Clock Sync: experiment with it. On some devices it is the setting that stops audio drifting away from the visuals.
• Frameskip: 0. Frameskip destroys the input windows that make these games work, which is why the “turn on frameskip for low-end phones” advice ruins exactly the games those same articles recommend.

The Android 11 storage step that breaks most first setups

On Android 11 and newer, PPSSPP cannot choose a storage folder for you, and skipping that step is the number one reason a first-time setup fails. Scoped storage means the app has to be handed a folder by you, through the system picker.

At first launch, or later in Settings, then System, then PSP Memory Stick, choose “Create or choose a PSP folder”. Pick somewhere on internal storage you will remember.

If you skip it, PPSSPP falls back to writing save data into the app’s private folder under /Android/data, where an uninstall takes your saves with it and file managers struggle to reach them.

One quirk worth knowing from PPSSPP’s storage documentation: if you name the folder PSP, the emulator uses it directly instead of nesting another PSP folder inside it. Change one setting at a time after that, and test each change on the same scene so you can tell what actually helped.

Best PPSSPP games under 500MB and for 2GB RAM phones

The genuinely small PSP games worth playing are LocoRoco, Lumines, Mega Man Powered Up, Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X, Patapon, Half-Minute Hero, Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai and Everybody’s Golf. All of them are 2D or near-2D, all of them run at full speed on entry-level Mali and Adreno chips, and none of them need a controller except the fighters.

If your phone has 2GB of RAM, that is the list. Add Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles if you want three games on one small disc and can live with its shaky grade.

What does not belong on a low-end phone: both God of Wars, Peace Walker, Crisis Core, Ys Seven and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. They are the biggest, most GPU-hungry files here, and no setting turns a dual-layer action game into a budget-chip game.

How to legally shrink your own dump

If storage is the problem, compress the file you dumped. Both of these formats are lossless, which means nothing is stripped out and nothing breaks.

• CSO — the oldest and best-tested option, built with maxcso. PPSSPP decompresses it on the fly and it performs as fast as or faster than a plain ISO. It also works on real PSP hardware.
• CHD — better compression, supported in PPSSPP since version 1.17, with a zstd mode added in 1.17.1 and much better performance across the 1.20 series. Build it with chdman in DVD mode using a 2048-byte hunk size.

That is the whole answer to the “highly compressed” question. A lossless CSO or CHD of your own dump saves real space; a 50MB file downloaded from a link farm saves space by deleting the game.

PSP multiplayer in 2026: ad hoc relay servers actually work now

PPSSPP’s 1.20 series added relay servers for ad hoc multiplayer, which removed the port-forwarding and carrier-NAT problem that killed PSP co-op for most people. The relay work landed with the 1.20 release in March 2026, and 1.20.4 followed on 16 May 2026.

Before this, playing Monster Hunter with a friend meant router configuration or a virtual LAN tool, and most people gave up. Now two people running PPSSPP can meet through a relay, and anyone can host their own relay if they want to.

PPSSPP’s own multiplayer quickstart names the Monster Hunter series, the Ridge Racer series, Call of Duty: Road to Victory and GTA as titles expected to work well over it. Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Twisted Metal: Head-On are the other obvious candidates on this list.

Separately, infrastructure mode came back in PPSSPP 1.19 against community-run servers. PPSSPP’s documentation confirms WipEout Pulse works well against The AG Racing Foundation server, and lists MotorStorm: Arctic Edge as compatible.

Set your expectations properly. Those are fan-run servers with no uptime guarantee, they need manual configuration, and PPSSPP’s own doc admits opponent ship textures render wrong in WipEout. This is a fun weekend project, not a feature.

And plenty of PSP online is gone for good. Sony shut the PSP and PS2 SOCOM servers on 31 August 2012, ended Resistance: Retribution’s online support on 5 May 2015, and Phantasy Star Portable 2’s infrastructure play went with Sega’s servers. LittleBigPlanet PSP never had online multiplayer at all, whatever the old lists say.

Free PSP games you can legally play in the next five minutes

PPSSPP has a Homebrew Store built into the app, and everything in it is free and freely redistributable. Open PPSSPP, go to the Games tab, choose “Homebrew & Demos”, then open the Homebrew Store. No disc, no dumping, no legal grey area.

What is in there: homebrew games written for the PSP, demoscene productions, and official publisher-released PSP demos. Some of it is better than it has any right to be.

PPSSPP’s demos and homebrew documentation covers the other sources, and the PSP Homebrew Library at the Internet Archive is a large free collection.

If you installed PPSSPP today and you do not own a PSP, this is where to start. It is also the fastest way to check whether your settings and your controller work before you commit to dumping a disc.

Do not bother: broken games, dead servers and fake apps

Every entry above is a recommendation. This section is the opposite, and it is the part other lists never write.

• Phantasy Star Portable 2 — on almost every competitor list and it should not be. Every 2026 report we could find stops at the menu, and the game was designed around Sega infrastructure servers that no longer exist. Even a working file gives you a hollowed-out single-player mode.
• Jeanne d’Arc — Level-5’s PSP-exclusive tactics game, and we badly wanted to include it. Recent reports fail to boot or stop at the menu, there is no legal alternative on any platform, and used discs are expensive. Recommending it would be recommending a bad evening.
• Gran Turismo (PSP) — 800 cars, 60fps, and no career mode at all. It reviewed poorly in 2009 for that reason, and recent reports on budget Adreno chips fail to boot. It is on other lists on brand recognition alone.
• Tekken 6 — the data is a mess. Reports from the same day on the same GPU come back in-game, menu-only, failed and Playable. Play Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection instead.
• Valkyria Chronicles 2 — beautiful, and the newest report we could find is from September 2024 on an old PPSSPP build. Anyone claiming verified 2026 compatibility for it is guessing.
• Patapon 3 — its endgame is built around multiplayer whose servers are dead, and several database entries under its ID are community mod builds rather than the retail disc.
• SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo and Fireteam Bravo 3 — recommended constantly for multiplayer that Sony shut down on 31 August 2012. Ad hoc via relay is all that survives, and it is not what those articles describe.
• LittleBigPlanet PSP — the PSP version never had online multiplayer, and the level-sharing servers are gone, so the shared-levels library that made it worth recommending does not exist.

The fake PPSSPP apps, and why they matter more

Any app promising “PPSSPP with games included” is either infringing or malicious. The real emulator ships with nothing, by design and by its own store listing. “PPSSPP Gold APK free download” is a large search stream and the sites serving it bundle exactly what you would expect.

On Android there are two legitimate sources: Google Play and the official builds at ppsspp.org. The package name is org.ppsspp.ppsspp for the free build and org.ppsspp.ppssppgold for the $4.99 Gold build.

One 2026 change makes this more urgent. Google’s developer verification requirement starts on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand on 30 September 2026 and goes global from 2027, and the new advanced sideloading flow adds a one-day waiting period before you can install from an unverified developer. If you sideload builds from ppsspp.org, that will change your routine.

PPSSPP vs PPSSPP Gold vs RetroArch

Install the free PPSSPP. Buy Gold only to fund the developer, because it is the same emulator.

Henrik Rydgård’s emulator is open source and it is the only PSP emulator worth writing about. The claim you will still find on older pages — that the free build is ad-supported and the paid one removes ads — is wrong. Its Play listing shows no “Contains ads” badge and no “In-app purchases” badge.

PPSSPP Gold — $4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Updated 16 May 2026 · v1.20.4 · 500,000+ installs · 4.5 from 29,048 ratings · rated Everyone.

Same emulator core, same version, released the same day. Its own listing says to buy it to support development, and that a free version exists. It is a donation with a gold icon, not a performance tier — anyone claiming Gold gets you more frames is making it up.

RetroArch — free · No ads · No IAP · Updated 24 August 2026 · v1.22.2 · 5,000,000+ installs · 3.8 from 47,450 ratings · rated Everyone.

Libretro’s frontend includes a PPSSPP core, so PSP emulation works inside it. Use it only if you already live in RetroArch for other consoles.

For PSP specifically, standalone PPSSPP wins. The RetroArch core lags the standalone app’s releases, and you lose PPSSPP’s per-game settings and its touch-control layout editor to a famously hostile menu.

Controllers, handhelds and the one-nub problem

Half the entries above end with “this needs a gamepad”, so here is the practical part. The PSP had one analogue nub and no right stick, which means camera control was mapped to face buttons or shoulder buttons in most 3D games.

Any Bluetooth controller works, and PPSSPP added native DualSense support in the 1.20 series. Clip-on pads like the Backbone One, Razer Kishi and the GameSir range solve the “where do my thumbs go” problem better than a separate pad on a phone.

If you use PPSSPP a lot, Android handhelds like the Retroid Pocket and AYN Odin ranges are where serious emulation has moved. They are a phone-class chip with real sticks and shoulder buttons attached.

What about iPhone?

PPSSPP runs on iPhone and iPad too, and the rule that matters here is the same one: it ships with no games. Our store data covers Google Play only, so we quote no App Store price.

Apple blocks just-in-time compilation, though, so the iOS build runs on an interpreter and is measurably slower than Android on comparable silicon. For PSP emulation specifically, Android is the better platform, and that is not a close call.

How to set up PPSSPP on Android the right way

1. Install the official app. Get PPSSPP from Google Play, package org.ppsspp.ppsspp — free, no ads, no in-app purchases, updated to v1.20.4 on 16 May 2026. Ignore any APK site promising a version with games included.
2. Create the memstick folder before anything else. On Android 11 and newer, open Settings, then System, then PSP Memory Stick, and choose “Create or choose a PSP folder”. Name it PSP and PPSSPP will use it directly instead of nesting another folder inside.
3. Add your own games. Copy in an ISO, CSO or CHD dumped from a UMD you own, or the folder containing an EBOOT.PBP from a PSP you own. If you have neither, open the Games tab and use the built-in Homebrew Store, which is free and legal.
4. Set the backend and rendering resolution. Choose Vulkan. Use 1x or 2x on a budget phone, 3x or 4x on a flagship, and only fall back to OpenGL if you see white boxes or a crash on launch.
5. Set per-game options by genre. Keep frameskip at 0 for fighting, rhythm and racing games and add the low-latency block. Use frameskip 1 or 2 only as a last resort in turn-based games.
6. Pair a controller and test. Connect a Bluetooth pad or a clip-on, or edit the touch layout in PPSSPP’s control settings. Run a free homebrew game first to confirm the setup before you spend an hour dumping a disc.

Bottom line

Install PPSSPP free from Google Play and buy Gold at $4.99 only if you want to pay the developer, because the two are identical. Start with God of War: Chains of Olympus if you have a flagship phone and a controller, or Mega Man Powered Up and LocoRoco if you do not.

Buy the remaster instead of emulating for Peace Walker, Crisis Core, Persona 3 Portable, Tactics Ogre and especially Final Fantasy Tactics, where the PSP version’s slowdown is a bug in the game itself. Skip Phantasy Star Portable 2, Jeanne d’Arc, Gran Turismo and Tekken 6 whatever other lists say. And ignore every result for “GTA 5 PPSSPP” or “God of War Ragnarok PPSSPP”, because those games were never made for the PSP.

Do this next: install PPSSPP, set the PSP memory stick folder before you do anything else, then open the built-in Homebrew Store and play something free and legal tonight. If it runs well, you know your settings are right before you go anywhere near a UMD.
