23 Best Free Mobile Games in 2026 (Ads, Prices & Size Checked)

The best free mobile games in 2026 are Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Pokémon TCG Pocket and Brawl Stars. Shattered Pixel Dungeon has no ads and nothing you have to buy. Pokémon TCG Pocket gives you two free card packs every day. Brawl Stars is a quick team game to play with friends.

Here is the problem. Almost every game on Google Play says "Free." Very few of them are.

So we checked. On 29 September 2026 we pulled the live US Google Play listing for 82 free games. 74 of them sell in-app purchases. 41 carry ads. Only 6 have neither. This page shows you which games are truly free, which ones are free with a catch, and what the catch costs.

What "free" really means: the 4 levels

A game that costs $0 can still cost you a lot. So we sorted every pick into one of four levels.

• Level 1: Free for real. No ads. Nothing you need to buy. At most, a tip jar.
• Level 2: Free, no ads. No ads on the Play listing. You can spend money, but nothing forces you to.
• Level 3: Free with ads. Ads pay for the game. You can play it all, but you will see them.
• Level 4: Free to start, big store. Huge online games with big shops. Fun, but set a budget rule first.

Every game below lists the same five things: ads, in-app purchases, rating, download size and whether it needs internet. Those come from the live Google Play listing, so you can check us.

These games earn $0 from ads. Most sell nothing at all. If you want zero tricks, start here.

1. Mindustry

Build a factory. Feed your turrets. Survive the waves.

What free gets you: The whole game. Its developer says it is "available for free" on Google Play and pays for it with donations. There is nothing to unlock.

The catch: It is a thinking game, not a tap game. Rounds run long, so it is not the pick for a two-minute break.

Tip: Start with the campaign. It teaches you one idea at a time.

Level 1. Get it: Mindustry on Google Play.

2. Unciv

Found a city. Grow an empire. Win the whole map, one turn at a time.

What free gets you: All of it. The developer promises "no ads, free forever." The code is open source, so anyone can read it.

The catch: It looks plain. It plays like the old classic, not like a 2026 blockbuster.

Tip: Open the menu, then Civilopedia, then Tutorials. Any Civ V guide you find online also works here.

3. Simon Tatham's Puzzles

Forty classic puzzles in one small app. Your phone makes a new one every time.

• Needs internet: no. It works fully offline

What free gets you: Everything. The Play page promises it will "always be free, with no ads, and playable offline." The app is only 7 MB, the smallest on this page.

The catch: There is no story, no rewards and no fancy art. Just puzzles. Also, this Android port last updated in September 2025, so it is quiet, but it still works.

Tip: Stuck? Tap Solve, then Undo. The answer goes into your undo list, so you can step back and finish the puzzle yourself.

4. Luanti (formerly Minetest)

A free block world. Mine, build, and try games made by other players.

• Needs internet: only on first launch, to download a game. You can play offline after that

What free gets you: The engine is free and open source. It has no ads and no shop. It was called Minetest until October 2024.

The catch: Luanti is an engine. When you open it, you pick a game to install, and those games vary a lot in quality. Keep the app updated too: version 5.17 fixed serious security holes.

Tip: Install the Tutorial game first. Then try others from the content browser.

5. Shattered Pixel Dungeon

• Needs internet: no. The developer calls it a 100% offline game unless you turn on Google Play Games

What free gets you: The whole game, with no ads and no timers. Version 4.0 landed on 9 September 2026 with a new vault quest and new pixel art.

The catch: The only purchases are supporter items. The developer says they give small cosmetic extras, and that the game "will always be 100% free." You will also lose a lot, because each death starts a new run.

Tip: You will not win on your first try. That is normal. Spend the talent points you earn as you go.

Level 2: Free, no ads

None of these show ads on their Google Play listing. They make money from optional shops. You can spend, but you do not have to.

6. Pokémon TCG Pocket

Open two free card packs a day. Collect Pokémon. Battle your friends.

• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: One free pack every 12 hours, so two a day. Wonder Pick refills every 12 hours too. Pack points never expire, and trading opens 14 days after you start.

The catch: Timers. Poké Gold can skip waits, up to 720 Gold a day, and it costs real money. Faster packs mean faster collecting, so paying does give you a head start. Trading also costs shinedust.

Tip: Finish the tutorial first for your starter decks. Then save your pack points until you are only missing a few cards.

7. Brawl Stars

Quick team fights with a huge cast of brawlers.

• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: The whole game is free to download and play. There is a free Brawl Pass track, and Trophy Road hands out brawlers. Your first six wins each day also give you a Starr Drop.

The catch: Since January 2026 the Brawl Pass costs $8.99, and Brawl Pass Plus costs $12.99. Gems speed up unlocks, and Play lists items up to $239.99. Skins are only for looks, but resources help you level faster.

Tip: Play your first six wins every day. That is free loot.

For parents: it is rated Everyone 10+. Players under 16 get stricter chat filters and no personalized ads or offers, according to Supercell's Young Player rules.

8. Clash Royale

What free gets you: A free Pass Royale track, Trophy Road, and gold crates. The March 2026 update added 200 free Hero Coins and made heroes unlock at Arena 5.

The catch: Your King Tower level gates the arenas, so you must level up to move on. Gems can buy missing cards, and that is a real head start. Play lists items up to $239.99.

Tip: Use Training Camp and Practice Mode to test decks. They cost nothing and use no resources.

Level 2. Get it: Clash Royale on Google Play.

9. Old School RuneScape

A giant online world. Train skills, do quests, fight monsters.

• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: 15 skills, 24 quests and about a third of the map. New accounts have trade limits until you reach 20 hours played, total level 100 and 10 quest points.

The catch: Members get 9 more skills, 160 quests and better gear. A membership costs real money, and it gives a true gameplay edge. Free players can also buy a bond with in-game coins. Play lists items up to $131.88.

Tip: On Tutorial Island, tell the Gielinor Guide you are new. Then set a bank PIN and turn on two-factor login.

Heads up: it is rated Teen, with a minimum age of 13. Jagex also says Jagex Accounts become required later in 2026. The exact date is still to be announced.

Level 2. Get it: Old School RuneScape on Google Play.

10. The Battle of Polytopia

Lead a small tribe. Build cities. Outsmart your rivals, one turn at a time.

What free gets you: The game itself, with no ads. Its official FAQ says it stays "free from ads" and is not pay to win.

The catch: Some tribes and skins cost money. Play lists items from $0.99 to $4.49, the lowest top price of any game with a shop on this page.

Tip: If wild animals are near your first city, research hunting first.

What free gets you: The full game. Its trailer is titled "Original, full game. Free, for real." There are no timers and no energy. Local co-op works for up to 4 players, and online co-op arrived in October 2025.

The catch: Google Play flags ads, and reviewers say they show up as buttons for a revive or extra gold. We could not re-test that this month. Extra content packs cost $0.99 to $3.99.

Tip: Take your time picking up gems and items. They do not vanish. Armour and Luck are good early power-ups.

Watch the size: this pixel game is up to 1.30 GB. That surprises most people.

Level 3. Get it: Vampire Survivors on Google Play.

12. Soul Knight

Shoot through random dungeons with a huge pile of guns.

• Needs internet: only to log in. After that, solo play can go offline

What free gets you: Play lists 20+ heroes and 400+ weapons. You can play alone or with 2 to 4 players, and offline local play is listed too.

The catch: Some heroes and skills cost money. There are random paid items too: a skin box (looks only) and a weapon-upgrade chest (helps you win). The developer published the drop rates in May 2026.

Tip: Cloud save is manual. Only the in-game cloud save backs up your progress, not Google Play Games.

Level 3. Get it: Soul Knight on Google Play.

13. Alto's Odyssey

Slide down desert dunes. One finger. No rush.

• Rating: 4.54 from 286,732 reviews
• Download: up to 119 MB · Last update: 16 October 2025
• Needs internet: not confirmed. Play does not say

What free gets you: Free on Android. Zen Mode has no scores, no coins and no power-ups, so you can just enjoy the ride.

The catch: Play flags ads, and an older review says an ad can play between runs. Play Pass removes them. On iPhone this game is paid and has no ads, so do not mix them up. Last Play update: 16 October 2025.

Tip: Start in Zen Mode. It is the best way to see the art.

Level 3. Get it: Alto's Odyssey on Google Play.

14. Smash Hit

Throw metal balls at glass while music plays. Do not hit the obstacles.

• Rating: 4.54 from 4,648,073 reviews

• Needs internet: no. Play tags it Offline. Cloud save needs internet

What free gets you: A free game with ads. Google Play says a one-time upgrade unlocks new modes, cloud save, stats and continuing from checkpoints.

The catch: The upgrade is the real price. It costs $1.99 on iPhone, and Play lists items from $1.99 to $9.99. The free game has ads.

Tip: Smash crystals to refill your balls. Each crystal gives 3 back.

Level 3. Get it: Smash Hit on Google Play.

15. Subway Surfers

Run along the train tracks. Dodge trains. Grab coins.

What free gets you: You earn coins by playing. You can also watch ads for free coins.

The catch: Keys and boosters cost money. An Ad Ticket removes the pop-up ads for good, but you have to buy it.

Tip: Swipe down while you are in a jump to land sooner. The developer lists it as a pro tip.

The catch: Play flags ads, and lists purchases from $4.99 to $49.99. We could not find an official list of what they buy. The Apple Arcade version has no ads, but that is iPhone only.

Tip: Think ahead and keep open space free. The developer's own advice: protect your open spaces and set up bigger combos.

17. Stumble Guys

Up to 32 players race through silly obstacle courses. Last one standing wins.

What free gets you: You unlock skins from the shop, the Stumble Pass, lucky wheels and events. You can watch an ad after a match to double your stars. The game also has a friends list and custom parties.

The catch: Abilities change how you play, and they upgrade with tokens from the Stumble Pass. Wheels are random, and we found no published odds. Play lists items up to $149.99.

These are big online games with big shops. They are free, and many people never pay. Still, know the rules before you start.

18. Roblox

Millions of games, all made by other players. You play as your avatar.

• Download: up to 234 MB · Last update: 23 September 2026
• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: Play says "Play free." Every game on the platform is free to open.

The catch: You cannot earn Robux for free. You buy them, then spend them on avatar items and perks inside games. Play lists items up to $199.99.

Tip: Robux generators are scams. Roblox says so plainly. Never enter your password on one.

For parents: it is rated Teen. Since 7 January 2026 a face or ID age check is needed to chat. Roblox also added Kids (ages 5 to 8) and Select (ages 9 to 15) accounts in 2026. Set a monthly limit under Settings, Parental controls, Spending restrictions. Roblox explains it in its spending controls guide.

What free gets you: You can play the game for free. You earn Credits by playing, and crate odds show when you tap the "?" icon.

The catch: Paying speeds up weapon progress. It is rated Mature 17+, so it is not for young kids. It also needs Android 6.0 or newer and 2 GB of RAM, and the download is up to 2.26 GB.

Tip: Finish your daily tasks, then tap Claim. The XP does not count until you do.

What free gets you: Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload and OG are all free. You also get free items from quests, the free Battle Pass track and turning on two-factor login.

The catch: Outfits and passes cost money. Epic says Fortnite returned to Google Play worldwide on 19 March 2026. It needs Android 10 and 4 GB of RAM at the least, and Android 14 with 8 GB of RAM is what Epic recommends.

Tip: Turn on two-factor login. Epic gives free items for it.

For parents: it is rated Teen. Epic Parental Controls can lock purchases behind a PIN and limit chat.

Level 4. Get it: Fortnite on Google Play.

21. Marvel Snap

Fast Marvel card battles. Build a deck. Win two of three locations.

• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: A free starter deck, and no energy timers and no ads, per its Play listing.

The catch: New cards cost Tokens. A Snap Pack is 5,000 Tokens, and the Season Pass is the only way to get that season's pass card. Its Play score is 3.4, lower than most games here. Reviews mention locked late-game cards, meta pressure and shop prices.

Tip: Use SNAP to double the stakes only when you think you are winning.

Good to know: it left US stores in January 2025 because of the TikTok ban, then came back with Second Dinner as publisher.

Level 4. Get it: Marvel Snap on Google Play.

22. Genshin Impact

A huge fantasy world to explore. The story is free.

• Ads: none listed · In-app purchases: $0.99 to $99.99
• Rating: 3.3 from 5,235,975 reviews
• Download: up to 688 MB
• Needs internet: yes. It is an online game

What free gets you: The story and the open world are free to play.

The catch: New characters and weapons come from Wishes, which are a gacha (random) system. Original Resin limits how many rewards you can farm each day. New characters are power, so paying gives an edge. Its Play score is 3.3, and the game was review-bombed on Google Play in 2021, so read that number with care.

Tip: Mix elements. Pyro plus Hydro makes vaporize, and it hits hard.

Check your storage: Google Play shows a small app, but HoYoverse lists a minimum of 40 GB free space, Android 10 and 4 GB of RAM. It is rated Teen. Tip: Use Razz Berries to stop escapes, Nanab Berries to slow a Pokémon, and Pinap Berries to double Candy.

For parents: players under 13 use a Niantic Kids account with a parent portal.

We checked every title on Google Play. These still show up on some "best free games" pages, so save yourself the search.

• Rocket League Sideswipe: the Play page returns an error. Its developer moved it to the Epic Games Store in August 2024.
• Final Fantasy Brave Exvius (global): the Play page is gone. The service ended on 30 October 2024.
• NBA Live Mobile: the Play page is gone.
• Disney Mirrorverse: servers closed on 16 December 2024.

How to play free games without paying by accident

1. Read the Play listing first. Look for "Contains ads" and "In-app purchases." The price range under it shows the biggest item.
2. Turn on purchase approval. In Google Play settings, set "Require authentication for purchases" to always. Google explains how in its purchase approval guide.
3. Play for 3 days before paying anything. If you still want it after 3 days, then decide.
4. Skip the first-day starter pack. Prices are not lower than they will be later.
5. Check the odds. In games with random packs, look for the drop rates before you buy.
6. Set a kid limit. On Roblox, use the monthly spending limit. On Fortnite, use a PIN.
7. Never pay a stranger for free currency. Robux and V-Bucks "generators" are scams.

How we checked these games

• We started with 82 free games. That includes every game that showed up on several of the top pages for this search, such as Pocket Gamer, Stuff and Android Authority.
• We pulled each game's live US Google Play listing on 29 September 2026. That gave us the price, the ads flag, the in-app purchase range, installs, rating and update date.
• We read each game's official help pages, developer notes or store text to find what free players get and what costs money.
• We measured download sizes on APKCombo. The number is a ceiling, so your phone will usually download less.
• We removed games that are gone from Google Play.
• Play's "Contains ads" label is not perfect. Roblox and Pokémon GO show optional ads with no label. We say so where we know.
• We only write what we could check. Where we could not confirm something, such as whether Alto's Odyssey works offline, we say "not confirmed."
