48 Best Puzzle Games for Android in 2026 (Real Puzzles, Not Ad Farms)

Baba Is You store art, our top pick among the best puzzle games for Android in 2026

The best puzzle games for Android in 2026 are Baba Is You, The Room: Old Sins, and Simon Tatham’s Puzzles. Baba Is You is the one to buy first: $6.99 on Google Play, no ads, no in-app purchases, updated 9 February 2026. Simon Tatham’s Puzzles is the best free puzzle game for Android, with no ads badge and no IAP badge at all.

Below are 48 games, grouped by sub-genre, with the price, the “Contains ads” flag, the “In-app purchases” flag, the last update date and the star rating read off the live US Play Store on 26 August 2026.

Most puzzle lists on this query pad themselves out with games that are not puzzles. Empires & Puzzles and Puzzles & Survival are online-only gacha games with a match-3 combat skin, and they turn up on top-ranking pages every year. Other lists get the money wrong, calling Baba Is You “free with ads” when Play shows $6.99 with neither flag.

We did the boring part instead. Every game here has a Google Play listing we opened on 26 August 2026, and every price, ads badge, IAP badge, update date, install band and rating on this page comes from that listing. Nothing is quoted from a press kit.

The fake-gameplay-ad test: four questions before you install

The pin-pull puzzle you have seen a thousand times in mobile ads is not a real game mode. On 30 September 2020 the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority ruled against Playrix over exactly this, in ads for Homescapes and Gardenscapes.

The regulator found that the pin-pulling rescue puzzle in the ads turned up in only a tiny share of the game’s thousands of levels. The rest was match-3. You can read the ASA’s guidance on advertising mobile app games and a plain-English write-up of the ruling itself.

Google has its own rule about this. Play’s Misrepresentation policy bans store listings and ads that show gameplay the app does not contain. Enforcement is patchy, so you still have to check yourself.

Here is the test. It takes about thirty seconds on the store page, and it works on any puzzle game.

  • 1. What does the category tag say? Scroll to the listing’s genre line. If a “puzzle” game is filed under Strategy, Adventure or Role Playing, the puzzle is a marketing layer. Hero Wars is the textbook case: the pin-pull puzzle in its ads is not a mode in the game.
  • 2. Does the store video show the mechanic the ad showed? Developers control both. When the ad shows a rescue-the-character puzzle and the store trailer shows a match-3 board, you already have your answer.
  • 3. Is there a “Contains ads” badge and an in-app purchase ceiling above $99? That pairing means the game rents your attention and sells you out of the wait. Cut the Rope lists in-app purchases from $0.49 to $197.99. Royal Match lists $0.99 to $99.99.
  • 4. What do the one-star reviews say? Sort reviews by lowest and read ten. If the phrase “not like the ad” shows up more than twice, believe them.

Run it on this page’s own picks and most of them pass on all four counts. That is the point of the list.

What the premium puzzle games actually cost per hour

“Is it worth $6.99” is the real question, so here is the arithmetic. Run times below are typical completion times, not measured in a lab, and they will vary a lot by how much you use hints.

GamePriceRough run timeCost per hour
Mini Metro$0.99Endless mode, unlimitedEffectively $0
LIMBO$0.403–4 hoursAbout $0.12
The Room$0.99About 90 minutesAbout $0.66
The Room Two$1.993–4 hoursAbout $0.57
Baba Is You$6.99200+ levels, 20 hours plusUnder $0.35
Poly Bridge 2$1.9910 hours plus with sandboxAbout $0.20
The Room: Old Sins$4.994–5 hoursAbout $1.10
Gorogoa$4.99About 2 hoursAbout $2.50
A Monster’s Expedition$9.498–10 hoursAbout $1.05
Is This Seat Taken?$9.993–4 hoursAbout $2.85

Two things fall out of that table. Gorogoa and Is This Seat Taken? are the worst value per hour on this page, and both are still good games — you are paying for craft, not runtime.

The other lesson is that Simon Tatham’s Puzzles costs nothing forever and includes forty-plus puzzle types. If cost per hour is the only thing you care about, stop reading and install that.

Will it even install on your 2026 phone?

A stale “last updated” date is a buying signal on Android, not trivia. Google Play’s target API level requirements mean apps that have not been rebuilt against recent Android versions stop being offered to new users on newer devices.

That is why a chunk of the classics other lists still recommend are quietly disappearing. Check the update date before you pay.

If the Play page opens on your phone and shows an Install button, you are fine. If it opens on a desktop browser but your phone says the app is not compatible, that is this rule biting.

Built for touch versus ported to touch

The Play rating is the cheapest port-quality signal you have, and on Android it splits the category neatly in two. Games designed for a touchscreen sit at 4.7 and above. Celebrated PC and console games dumped onto a phone sit near 4.0, and the reviews say why.

Gorogoa4.04,314Ported to touch

Her Story3.01,251Broken port

Her Story is the clearest example. It is one of the best-reviewed detective games ever made on other platforms, and its Android build sits at 3.0 from 1,251 ratings, priced at $1.99 and last updated 9 October 2025.

We did not give it a numbered slot for that reason. A 3.0-star app is not a recommendation, however good the game underneath is.

How we picked (26 August 2026)

  • Every pick has a live Play listing. We opened each one on 26 August 2026 and recorded price, the “Contains ads” badge, the “In-app purchases” badge and range, the last update date, the install band, the developer name and the star rating.
  • Store data beats reputation. Where a game’s press coverage and its Play listing disagreed, the listing won. That is why Gorogoa appears with a 4.0 rating instead of the glowing figure you see elsewhere.
  • It has to be a puzzle. Games whose Play category is Strategy or Role Playing did not qualify, no matter how many puzzle tags they carry.
  • Small rating samples are flagged, not hidden. A Monster’s Expedition has 70 ratings. Sokobond has 37. We say so instead of printing an average as if it were settled.
  • Sub-genre coverage was a requirement. Escape room, physics, logic, sokoban, word, jigsaw, tile, narrative and programming puzzlers each get real entries, plus an honest match-3 verdict.
  • What we did not do. We did not play all 48 to completion, and we did not re-test every game in airplane mode for this update. Run times in the cost-per-hour table are estimates. Prices are US Play Store prices and will differ in your region.

The 48 best puzzle games for Android in 2026

Pure puzzle design — the hard, honest core

1. Baba Is You

$6.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 9 February 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.7 from 1,926 ratings · Hempuli.

You do not push blocks in Baba Is You. You push the words that make the rules, so “WALL IS STOP” can be dismantled into “WALL IS YOU” and the level breaks open. Nothing else on Android asks you to think this way, and Hempuli is still patching the Android build.

The catch is that it is genuinely brutal and gives you almost no hints. The tiny pixel text is fiddly on a phone, so play it on a tablet if you have one. Read the developer’s own page at hempuli.com before you buy.

Best for: anyone who wants to be stuck for an hour and love it. Skip if: you want to finish what you start.

2. LOK Digital

Free download with a $5.99 in-app unlock · No ads · Real puzzle · Updated 19 May 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.5 from 541 ratings · Draknek.

LOK Digital teaches you nothing on purpose. You are handed an invented language and you deduce what each word does from the puzzles themselves. It is the best thing to play after Baba Is You.

Play lists the in-app purchase at $5.99 per item, so the free download is a trial, not the whole book. The install base is small enough that there is very little help online when you stall.

Best for: people who liked the rule-bending and want more. Skip if: you need a tutorial.

3. Cosmic Express

$5.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 20 January 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.4 from 717 ratings · Draknek.

Draw a single train route that picks up every alien and drops each one at the right stop. It looks cute for about forty levels and then it starts hurting. The later worlds are some of the nastiest route-planning puzzles on the platform.

Touch drawing can misregister on tight grids, which is maddening when you know the answer. A lot of players stop around two thirds through. Draknek also publishes LOK Digital, A Monster’s Expedition and Sokobond.

Best for: logistics brains. Skip if: a difficulty spike makes you quit.

4. A Monster’s Expedition

$9.49 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 3 June 2026 · 10,000+ installs · 4.5 from only 70 ratings · Draknek.

This is box-pushing with no fail state. You knock trees into rivers to build bridges between islands, and the whole archipelago is one enormous connected puzzle you can wander at will.

Two honest warnings. It is the most expensive game on this page at $9.49, and 70 ratings is a very thin sample to bet that money on. Use Google Play’s refund window if it does not click.

Best for: people who hate undo anxiety. Skip if: you want tightly authored levels.

5. A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build

$5.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 8 July 2025 · 10,000+ installs · 4.7 from 777 ratings · Draknek.

Classic sokoban wearing a scarf. You roll three snowballs into a stack, in a walled garden of small hand-made levels, and there is a hidden hard mode waiting after the credits.

It is about three hours for $5.99 unless you chase the secret levels. The July 2025 update date puts it on the medium-risk list in our will it still install section.

Best for: a calm, complete, ad-free evening. Skip if: $5.99 for three hours stings.

6. Human Resource Machine

$4.99 · No ads · IAP at $0.49 per item · Real puzzle · Updated 1 May 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.0 from 3,030 ratings · Tomorrow Corporation.

You write tiny assembly-language programs by dragging instruction blocks, and every level has optional targets for size and speed. It is the only real programming puzzler on Play, and the optimisation targets give it far more tail than the price suggests.

The 4.0 rating is the port, not the game. Drag-and-drop targets are tiny on a phone, so treat this as a tablet purchase.

Best for: programmers and would-be programmers. Skip if: you only have a small phone.

Escape rooms and tactile object puzzles

7. The Room

$0.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 13 October 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 289,584 ratings · Fireproof Games.

One safe, ninety minutes, and the best 99 cents in this genre. Fireproof built the whole sub-genre with this in 2012 and it still gets store updates.

It is short and visually dated next to the sequels. Buy it as a test of whether you like the sub-genre, not as the main event.

Best for: finding out cheaply if escape rooms are for you. Skip if: you want scope.

8. The Room Two

$1.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 13 October 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.9 from 244,420 ratings · Fireproof Games.

Three to four hours across multiple connected rooms, and the highest-rated escape room game on Android by rating count. At $1.99 it is the best value in the series.

The multi-room structure means more hunting for the one thing you missed. Some players find that padding rather than exploration.

Best for: your second purchase after the original. Skip if: backtracking annoys you.

9. The Room Three

$3.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 14 October 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.9 from 113,860 ratings · Fireproof Games.

The longest game in the series at roughly six hours, and the only one with multiple endings. If you only play one Fireproof game for the length, play this.

Getting every ending means replaying the last act. That is either great value or a chore, depending on you.

Best for: the most hours per dollar in the series. Skip if: you want one clean run and out.

10. The Room: Old Sins

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 14 October 2025 · 500,000+ installs · 4.9 from 85,713 ratings · Fireproof Games.

The series peak. The whole game hangs off a dollhouse, and moving between its rooms is the structure rather than a menu. Fireproof’s own Old Sins page has the details.

The built-in hint system will hand you answers if you idle, which softens the difficulty more than some players want. Playing 1 to 3 first puts the real entry cost at about $11.96 for the set.

Best for: the single best escape room on Android. Skip if: you want to be genuinely stuck.

11. The House of Da Vinci 3

$6.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 14 August 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.7 from 8,528 ratings · Blue Brain Games.

The only credible rival to The Room, and it has a fresher build than Old Sins. Its hook is time manipulation: you rewind a mechanism to see how it was assembled, then use that to open it.

The writing is weaker than Fireproof’s and the machines are denser, which some people love and some find fussy. Start with the first game if $6.99 feels like a leap.

Best for: people who finished The Room and want more. Skip if: you want a tight, short game.

12. Underground Blossom

$2.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 28 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.9 from 12,786 ratings · Rusty Lake.

Each subway station is a self-contained escape room, and the whole thing runs about two hours. It is Rusty Lake’s strongest premium release and one of the highest-rated paid puzzlers on Play.

The story only lands if you already know the Rusty Lake canon from the studio’s other games. Newcomers get beautiful nonsense, and a few puzzles lean on the series’ famously obtuse logic.

Best for: existing Rusty Lake players. Skip if: you want a story that explains itself.

13. Cube Escape Collection

Free · Contains ads · IAP at $2.99 per item · Ad-funded · Updated 7 October 2025 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 63,705 ratings · Rusty Lake.

Nine complete Cube Escape games in one free download. That is the best free escape room package on Android and the honest counterweight to the paid Rusty Lake titles.

Play flags it as containing ads, with a $2.99 in-app purchase to strip them out. The bundled games are the older, rougher entries rather than the polished premium ones.

Best for: free escape rooms with real design behind them. Skip if: interstitials break your concentration.

14. The Past Within

$2.99 · No ads · No IAP · Two-player only · Updated 18 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.8 from 48,704 ratings · Rusty Lake.

Two people, two devices, two copies. Each of you sees half the puzzle and has to describe it to the other, and the design is genuinely unlike anything else on the store.

Read that again before you buy: it cannot be played alone. Every list that files this under “best solo offline puzzler” is wrong, and it does not count toward our offline picks.

Best for: couples and flatmates on a rainy evening. Skip if: you are shopping for a commute game.

Narrative and impossible geometry

15. Monument Valley 3

Free download with a $4.99 in-app unlock · No ads · Real puzzle · Updated 7 August 2026 · 500,000+ installs · 4.8 from 7,686 ratings · ustwo games.

Noor sails a boat through shifting architecture and rising tides, and the perspective tricks are as good as the series has ever managed. It is a standalone Play release now, not a Netflix app, which corrects a myth half the internet still repeats.

The free download is the first two chapters. The full game plus The Garden of Life expansion is a single in-app purchase listed at $4.99 per item on ustwo’s own site and on Play. Difficulty is deliberately gentle.

Best for: the most beautiful puzzle game on the platform. Skip if: you want to be challenged.

16. Monument Valley

$3.99 · No ads · IAP at $1.99 per item · Real puzzle · Updated 2 March 2026 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.9 from 266,780 ratings · ustwo games.

The 2014 original is still on Play as a normal paid app, despite the widespread belief that it went Netflix-only. Two hours of Escher staircases, and it is still the cleanest introduction to the idea.

The Forgotten Shores chapters are a separate $1.99 purchase on top of the $3.99. It is also very easy, so treat it as a short interactive artwork rather than a challenge.

Best for: a calm evening and a nice screen. Skip if: two hours for $3.99 is not your maths.

17. Monument Valley 2

$3.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 2 March 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.9 from 85,049 ratings · ustwo games.

The only game in the series with no in-app purchases at all, which makes it the cleanest listing ustwo has. Same mechanics as the first game, wrapped in a mother-and-daughter story.

It is even shorter than the original and adds almost nothing mechanically. If you have played the first, you know how this goes.

Best for: people who want one purchase and nothing else. Skip if: you have already finished the first game.

18. Gorogoa

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 23 May 2024 · 50,000+ installs · 4.0 from 4,314 ratings · Annapurna Interactive.

Four hand-drawn panels that you slide, zoom and overlap until the pictures connect. The mechanic is unlike anything else on Android and the art is extraordinary.

Two honest problems. The Android build has not been touched since 23 May 2024, and the 4.0 rating reflects crash and compatibility complaints rather than the design. Two hours for $4.99 is also the worst price-per-hour on this page after Is This Seat Taken?.

Best for: people who want to see something new. Skip if: your phone is brand new and you hate gambling on old builds.

19. There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 22 February 2026 · 500,000+ installs · 4.7 from 15,249 ratings · DRAW ME A PIXEL.

You puzzle against the game’s own interface. Buttons lie to you, the narrator tries to stop you, and solutions involve doing things to the app rather than in it.

It is one of the cleanest premium listings on Play, with neither badge. The catch is that it is very talky, so five hours drags if the comedy misses.

Best for: people bored of grids. Skip if: you play in noisy five-minute bursts.

20. Chants of Sennaar

Free download with in-app purchases from $0.49 to $5.99 · No ads · Real puzzle · Updated 18 May 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.8 from 4,301 ratings · Playdigious.

You rebuild five invented languages from context alone, and the game checks your glossary as you go. It is the most original deduction design on Android in 2026.

The free download is a trial and the rest is an in-app purchase. It is also a walking-and-looking game, and the stealth sections in the middle chapters are widely disliked.

Best for: linguists and code-breakers. Skip if: you want puzzles in a grid.

Logic, deduction and numbers

21. Simon Tatham’s Puzzles

Free · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 12 September 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.9 from 16,579 ratings · Chris Boyle.

Forty-plus logic puzzle types with infinite generated levels and adjustable difficulty, for nothing, forever. Solo is sudoku, Pattern is nonograms, and Loopy is slitherlink. There is no ads badge and no in-app purchases badge on the listing.

The interface looks like a settings menu, with no music, animation or progression. It is a third-party Android port by Chris Boyle of Simon Tatham’s desktop collection, not a first-party app.

Best for: everyone. Install it before you buy anything else. Skip if: you need a game to look nice.

22. The Case of the Golden Idol

Free download with a $6.99 in-app unlock · No ads · Real puzzle · Updated 12 June 2026 · 10,000+ installs · 4.4 from 276 ratings · Playstack.

Scrub a frozen crime scene for words, then fill in the sentence that explains who did what to whom. It is the closest Android gets to a proper detective deduction game.

Only 276 ratings on 10,000+ installs, so Android port confidence is lower than the game’s reputation elsewhere. There is heavy reading on a small screen. The sequel, The Rise of the Golden Idol, is on Play at $6.99 but shows only a 100+ install band and no rating average yet.

Best for: Obra Dinn fans stuck on a phone. Skip if: you read on the bus.

23. Papers, Please

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 30 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.6 from 5,665 ratings · 3909.

Check documents against a growing rulebook and find the discrepancy before the clock beats you. It is a rules-parsing puzzle dressed as a border-control job, and the Android version was rebuilt for touch rather than dumped from PC.

Play files it under Role Playing and rates it Mature 17+, which is fair. The timer means some mistakes come from speed, not logic, and the text is dense enough that a tablet helps.

Best for: people who like rules more than shapes. Skip if: you want something relaxing.

24. Euclidea

Free · No ads · IAP from $0.49 to $14.99 · Real puzzle · Updated 8 August 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 91,690 ratings · HORIS INTERNATIONAL LIMITED.

Real straightedge-and-compass geometry problems, graded on how elegant your construction is. This is the best answer to “best brain puzzle games Android” because it teaches an actual skill instead of imitating one.

Later level packs and hints are in-app purchases, so the free portion is finite. The last update was 8 August 2025, and the middle packs assume secondary-school geometry.

Best for: anyone who wants brain training that is really training. Skip if: geometry class still gives you flashbacks.

25. Is This Seat Taken?

$9.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 14 August 2026 · 10,000+ installs · 4.5 from 486 ratings · Poti Poti Studio.

Seat every character so that all their stated preferences are satisfied. It is a logic-grid puzzle with a friendly face, and it is the newest strong premium release on this page.

$9.99 for three to four hours is the steepest cost per hour here. With 10,000+ installs there is no walkthrough ecosystem yet, and the late levels stack constraints until they become tedious rather than clever.

Best for: people who do logic grids on paper. Skip if: the price to length ratio bothers you.

26. Nonograms Katana

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $0.99 to $5.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 13 July 2026 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 197,293 ratings · Ucdevs Interaction.

Thousands of nonograms, coloured nonograms and a built-in editor, plus a huge library of community puzzles. It is the pick nonogram players actually use rather than the slickest one.

It carries both badges and the interface is plain. Downloading the community library needs a connection first, after which the puzzles play offline.

Best for: picross addicts who want volume. Skip if: you want zero ads — use Pattern inside Simon Tatham’s instead.

27. Sudoku.com

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $2.49 to $14.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 2 July 2026 · 100,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 2,471,494 ratings · Easybrain.

This is the sudoku app most people install, so it belongs here even though it is not the one we would choose. Daily challenges, six difficulty levels and clean input.

The monetisation is Easybrain standard: an interstitial between puzzles and a subscription nag. The better answer for anyone who hates ads is Solo inside Simon Tatham’s Puzzles, which is the same puzzle with nothing attached.

Best for: people who want streaks and stats. Skip if: you would rather not see an ad after every grid.

Physics, construction and platform puzzles

28. Poly Bridge 2

$1.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 5 October 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 14,286 ratings · Dry Cactus Limited.

Build a bridge on a budget, press play, and watch it fold in half. The full campaign plus sandbox is here for $1.99 with neither badge on the listing, which is remarkable value.

Building on a phone screen is cramped, so this is really a tablet game. The budget-limited later levels are structural fiddling more than lateral thinking.

Best for: engineers and people who enjoy failure. Skip if: your only device is a small phone.

29. Bridge Constructor Portal

$1.99 · No ads · IAP at $0.99 per item · Real puzzle · Updated 17 March 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 21,564 ratings · Headup.

Portals, propulsion gel and turrets turn bridge-building into an actual logic problem instead of a stress test. The Aperture Science writing is intact and genuinely funny.

Sixty levels, roughly five hours, with a $0.99 in-app purchase listed on top of the price. The late portal-momentum levels lean on trial and error more than the Portal branding suggests.

Best for: Portal fans who want a puzzle on a phone. Skip if: you want pure construction.

30. LIMBO

$0.40 · No ads · No IAP · Puzzle platformer · Updated 13 August 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.4 from 82,659 ratings · Playdead.

A monochrome puzzle platformer that is still getting store updates sixteen years on, and at $0.40 it is the cheapest thing on this page. The environmental puzzles are physics traps you solve by dying once and learning.

It is a reflex game as much as a puzzle game, so it fails a strict “contemplative puzzler” filter. Touch controls are the weakest part of the port. The package to look for is com.playdead.limbo.full, because the id most listicles print is dead.

Best for: forty cents well spent. Skip if: timed jumps annoy you.

31. Brain It On! – Physics Puzzles

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $0.99 to $3.49 · Ad-funded · Updated 13 July 2026 · 50,000,000+ installs · 4.3 from 524,560 ratings · Orbital Nine Games.

Draw shapes and they become real objects with mass. The puzzles are open-ended enough that watching other people’s solutions is half the appeal.

The physics is deliberately imprecise, so some wins come from repeated attempts rather than insight. The community and solution-sharing features need a connection, so it only half counts as offline.

Best for: quick free physics puzzles. Skip if: imprecise physics makes you furious.

32. Cut the Rope

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $0.49 to $197.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 18 August 2026 · 100,000,000+ installs · 4.4 from 2,694,093 ratings · ZeptoLab.

The reference physics puzzler on Android, designed for touch from day one and still updated in August 2026. The rope-cutting momentum puzzles hold up better than almost anything else from that era.

That $197.99 in-app purchase ceiling is the second-highest on this page, and the free version is interstitial-heavy between packs. Cut the Rope 3 is an Apple Arcade exclusive and has never come to Android, whatever other lists claim.

Best for: a free classic that plays well on any phone. Skip if: you flinch at that IAP ceiling.

Sokoban, grids and turn-based boards

33. Sokoban Touch

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $0.99 to $2.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 30 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.2 from 801 ratings · ThinkingRabbit.

This is sokoban from the studio that invented sokoban in 1982. Every other list links an anonymous clone, so it is worth knowing that Thinking Rabbit publishes on Play itself.

The presentation is bare, it carries both badges, and 4.2 from 801 ratings is modest. You are here for provenance and the original level sets, not polish.

Best for: box-pushing purists. Skip if: you want a modern interface.

34. Railbound

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 27 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.2 from 1,148 ratings · Afterburn.

Lay track so the carriages couple in the right order. It is fully deterministic, so every failure is your fault, and the later worlds spike much harder than the art suggests.

4.2 is the lowest rating in Afterburn’s catalogue, and the complaints are about the touch precision needed to place track on a small screen. It is another one that is better on a tablet.

Best for: people who like tidy deterministic systems. Skip if: fat fingers are a problem.

35. Hitman GO

$5.99 · No ads · IAP from $0.99 to $4.99 · Real puzzle · Updated 10 February 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 100,672 ratings · Deca Games.

Turn-based assassination on a board-game diorama, with perfect information and no randomness. Every list that calls the GO games delisted is years out of date: this one is live under Deca Games and was updated on 10 February 2026.

$5.99 for a 2014 game is a lot, and Play shows hint packs as in-app purchases on top. Late puzzles become memorisation of patrol cycles rather than insight.

Best for: chess-brained players. Skip if: you dislike trial and repeat.

36. Lara Croft GO

$5.99 · No ads · IAP at $1.99 per item · Real puzzle · Updated 26 February 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 103,904 ratings · Deca Games.

The best-rated of the GO trilogy at 4.8 from 103,904 ratings. Same turn-based grid logic as Hitman GO with better pacing and far more variety in the environments.

Hints are an in-app purchase on top of $5.99, and it runs about four hours. If you are only buying one GO game, buy this one.

Best for: the single best turn-based puzzle on Android. Skip if: you already own Hitman GO and want something new.

Word puzzles

37. NYT Games: Wordle & Crossword

Free · No ads · IAP from $0.99 to $299.99 · Needs a connection · Updated 24 August 2026 · 10,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 141,355 ratings · The New York Times Company.

There is no separate Wordle app. Wordle, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee and the Mini all live in this one free download, and Play shows no ads badge on it.

The in-app purchase range goes up to $299.99 because it covers subscriptions. The full crossword archive and stats sit behind NYT Games, and the daily puzzles need a connection, so this is not an offline pick.

Best for: a daily habit. Skip if: you want puzzles on a plane.

38. Knotwords

Free · No ads · IAP from $4.99 to $11.99 · Real puzzle · Updated 7 January 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.4 from 4,071 ratings · Noodlecake.

Zach Gage and Jack Schlesinger’s deduction crossword. You get letters and shapes and no clues at all, so there is no trivia gatekeeping — only logic.

The free tier is the daily puzzles; the full library is behind in-app purchases from $4.99. Dailies get repetitive once you internalise the pattern, and it needs reasonable English vocabulary.

Best for: people who hate crossword trivia but love the grid. Skip if: English is not your first language.

39. GUBBINS

Free · No ads · IAP from $1.99 to $12.99 · Real puzzle · Updated 30 July 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.7 from 3,253 ratings · Folly Studio.

Tile-laying word construction where little creatures modify your letters as you play. It is a designed puzzle game rather than a word-search wrapped in ads, and Play shows no ads badge.

In-app purchases from $1.99 unlock the full roster of gubbins; the free tier gives you a limited set. Draw-pile randomness means some boards are simply bad through no fault of yours.

Best for: a modern word game with real design. Skip if: luck in a puzzle bothers you.

Jigsaw and tile matching

40. Jigsaw Puzzles Epic

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $1.99 to $3.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 20 August 2026 · 10,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 393,806 ratings · Kristanix Games.

Thousands of pictures, piece counts up to the hundreds, and you can import your own photos. It plays offline once the picture packs are downloaded.

It carries both badges, but its in-app purchase ceiling is $3.99. That is the reason to pick it over Magic Jigsaw Puzzles, whose ceiling runs to three figures and which gates most of its picture packs.

Best for: jigsaws without a predatory storefront. Skip if: you want zero ads.

41. Mahjong Solitaire

Free · Contains ads · IAP from $1.99 to $29.99 · Ad-funded · Updated 10 August 2026 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 110,193 ratings · MobilityWare.

Be clear about what this is: mahjong solitaire, the tile-matching patience game, not four-player mahjong. Searchers conflate the two constantly and most pages let them.

Unlimited offline layouts and a clean interface, with both badges on the listing. MobilityWare is the least aggressive of the mass-market versions, which is a low bar it clears.

Best for: a tile game to play with the TV on. Skip if: you actually wanted riichi mahjong.

Calm, cheap and one-handed

42. Mini Metro

$0.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 16 June 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.6 from 74,384 ratings · Dinosaur Polo Club.

Draw subway lines across a growing city and keep it from choking. At $0.99 with neither badge and an endless mode, it is the best price-to-depth ratio on this page.

It runs in real time, so it is a stress puzzle rather than a thinking one. The campaign is short; endless mode is where the actual game lives.

Best for: one dollar, hundreds of hours. Skip if: you want to pause and ponder each move.

43. Linelight

$1.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 13 August 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.8 from 19,255 ratings · My Dog Zorro.

Over 200 levels of pure line-based maze logic, and at 4.8 it is one of the highest-rated paid puzzlers on Play. It was updated on 13 August 2026, so it is actively supported.

Some later levels turn into real-time dodging, which frustrates people who came to think. The minimalist art gives you almost no feedback about why a solution failed.

Best for: two dollars, a lot of levels, no interruptions. Skip if: you want zero reflex sections.

44. Please, Touch The Artwork 2

Free · No ads · No IAP · Genuinely free · Updated 29 May 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.7 from 1,937 ratings · Thomas Waterzooi.

One of only a handful of free games on Play with no ads badge and no in-app purchases badge. You poke around inside James Ensor paintings and things happen.

It is about ninety minutes and the puzzles are gentle observation tasks rather than logic. The first game rates far lower and does carry in-app purchases, so start with this one.

Best for: a free, quiet, completely clean download. Skip if: you want difficulty.

45. A Little to the Left

Free download with a $9.99 in-app unlock · No ads · Updated 20 March 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.2 from 8,120 ratings · Secret Mode Ltd.

Tidy household objects into the arrangement the game wants. The puzzle is guessing which of several sensible orders it has in mind, and touch suits it perfectly.

The 4.2 rating comes from that exact ambiguity, with players complaining that only one solution counts. The free download is a trial and the unlock is listed at $9.99 per item.

Best for: cosy sorting before bed. Skip if: ambiguous solutions enrage you.

46. Hidden Folks

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 17 November 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.8 from 4,896 ratings · Adriaan de Jongh.

Hand-drawn search scenes where everything is interactive and every sound effect was made with a mouth. It is the only hidden-object game on Android with no ad monetisation at all.

Squinting at dense monochrome line art on a phone is hard on the eyes, so this is a tablet game. Once found, targets stay found, so replay value is close to zero.

Best for: a tablet and good light. Skip if: you want to replay something.

47. Klocki

$3.49 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 4 October 2025 · 100,000+ installs · 4.5 from 4,288 ratings · Rainbow Train.

Slide tiles to connect lines. There is no timer, no score and no monetisation of any kind, which is why it keeps showing up on lists like this one.

It is deliberately easy and most people finish it in under two hours. $3.49 for that runtime is the price of zero interruptions.

Best for: winding down. Skip if: you want to be beaten.

48. OXXO

$0.99 · No ads · No IAP · Real puzzle · Updated 27 February 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.7 from 2,520 ratings · Hamster On Coke Games.

A 3D sliding-block puzzler where you rotate the cube itself to change which way blocks fall. Cheap, clean and offline, with neither badge on the listing.

It is short, and the rotation gesture is easy to misread on smaller phones. There is no hint system, so a layout that defeats you stays defeating you.

Best for: a dollar spent well. Skip if: you need hints.

The hardest puzzle games on Android, in order

Baba Is You is the hardest puzzle game on Android in 2026, and nothing else is close. If you have finished it, here is where to go next, roughly in order of how much they will hurt.

  1. Baba Is You — $6.99. Rewriting the rules is a skill you have to build from nothing, and there are no hints.
  2. LOK Digital — free download, $5.99 unlock. You deduce an invented language with no instructions at all.
  3. Euclidea — free with in-app purchases. The middle packs assume real geometry knowledge and grade your elegance.
  4. Human Resource Machine — $4.99. The levels are easy. Hitting the size and speed targets is not.
  5. Cosmic Express — $5.99. The final worlds are where most players stop, at about two thirds done.
  6. A Monster’s Expedition — $9.49. Gentler moment to moment, but the late islands hide some vicious chains.

Two notes on Snakebird. The original is no longer on Google Play, so the only way to play it on Android is Snakebird Primer at $7.99 — and that is the deliberately easier prequel, not the notorious one.

Sokobond is the same story in a different shape. It is on Play at $5.99 with a superb teaching design, but it has 37 total ratings and has not been updated since 10 September 2024. Treat it as a completist purchase, not a recommendation.

Best free puzzle games for Android with no ads

Only two games on this entire page are free with no ads badge and no in-app purchases badge. That scarcity is the finding.

  • Simon Tatham’s Puzzles — 40+ puzzle types, infinite levels, 4.9 from 16,579 ratings. Nothing to buy, ever.
  • Please, Touch The Artwork 2 — about 90 minutes, 4.7 from 1,937 ratings, updated 29 May 2026.

That is the honest list of free games with nothing attached at all. Everything else marketed as free falls into one of two groups.

Free with no ads badge, but the real game is behind a purchase or a subscription: Monument Valley 3 ($4.99 unlock), LOK Digital ($5.99), Chants of Sennaar ($0.49 to $5.99), The Case of the Golden Idol ($6.99), Superliminal ($7.99 unlock), A Little to the Left ($9.99), Knotwords, GUBBINS, Euclidea and NYT Games. These are demos, and the store word for them is “free”.

Free and ad-funded: Cube Escape Collection, Nonograms Katana, Sudoku.com, Brain It On!, Cut the Rope, Sokoban Touch, Jigsaw Puzzles Epic, Mahjong Solitaire, KAMI 2, Flow Free and Block Blast!. Some of these are good games, but none of them are free of interruption. For a wider look across genres, see our list of games with no ads for Android and iOS.

Best offline puzzle games for Android

Most premium puzzle games on this page work with the connection off, because they have nothing to phone home about. The paid picks with no ads and no in-app purchases are the safest bets for a flight.

Reliable offline: Baba Is You, The Room (all four), The House of Da Vinci 3, Underground Blossom, Monument Valley 2, Gorogoa, There Is No Game, Papers, Please, Poly Bridge 2, LIMBO, Railbound, Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO, Mini Metro, Linelight, Hidden Folks, Klocki, OXXO and Simon Tatham’s Puzzles.

Three of the picks here need a connection, despite what you may have read. NYT Games pulls its dailies from the server, and Brain It On! needs one for community solutions.

Nonograms Katana needs a connection once, to download the user-puzzle library. After that the puzzles play offline.

And one that is not an offline pick at all: The Past Within requires two people, two devices and two copies. If you want more games that survive a dead zone, our full best offline games for Android list covers every genre.

One honest limit. We read each developer’s Play description and the store’s own offline signals rather than re-installing all 48 in airplane mode for this update. Test yours before you board.

The honest match-3 verdict

Match-3 is a real puzzle genre only when the board is solvable by planning. When the outcome is decided by which pieces drop next, it is a slot machine with fruit on it. That single question separates the whole category.

If you are going to play one, Royal Match is the least-bad giant. It has 100,000,000+ installs, 4.6 from 10,667,313 ratings, was updated on 31 July 2026, and Play shows no “Contains ads” badge on it at all.

That means it sells to you directly rather than renting your attention. In-app purchases run from $0.99 to $99.99 and there is a lives timer, so you pay in money or in waiting.

Royal Match store art, the least aggressive match-3 puzzle game for Android in 2026
Official Play Store screenshot © Dream Games, Ltd. Get Royal Match on Google Play.

Here is the hypocrisy worth naming. Royal Match’s own advertising runs flood-the-king and pin-pull scenes that are not how the game plays, which is exactly the behaviour the ASA ruled against in 2020. The listing is honest; the marketing is not.

Block Blast! is the other one you cannot ignore, because it is the number-one puzzle game on Android with 1,000,000,000+ installs and 4.9 from 5,310,778 ratings. It carries ads and in-app purchases, and most of your losses come from the block trio you were dealt rather than from a mistake you made.

If a retention loop is what you actually want, our best idle and clicker games list covers that genre without pretending it is a puzzle.

Homescapes, Gardenscapes and Hero Wars are the other names to know. The first two were the subject of the 2020 ASA ruling. Hero Wars is filed on Play under Strategy, Adventure and Role Playing — a hint that the puzzle in its ads is a poster, not a game.

Delisted, gated and never-on-Android (checked 26 August 2026)

These names appear on almost every competing list. On 26 August 2026 we could not find a live, purchasable Google Play listing for any of them, so we are not linking them and you should not go hunting.

  • Snakebird (the original) — gone from Play. Only the easier Snakebird Primer remains, at $7.99.
  • Golf Peaks — no live listing we could reach. Afterburn’s Railbound is the one to buy instead.
  • Machinarium and Rusty Lake: Roots — no live listing we could confirm. For point-and-click, Lumino City is on Play at $4.99; for Rusty Lake, buy Underground Blossom.
  • Threes! and Blockudoku — no live listing we could confirm. Mini Metro and Simon Tatham’s cover the same itch.
  • The Talos Principle, The Almost Gone, Zenge, Cats in Time, Mini Motorways — commonly listed, all dead at the package ids that circulate. Mini Metro is on Play; Mini Motorways never shipped there.

Netflix Games need an active Netflix subscription. Say that plainly, because two of the most-recommended “offline puzzle games” on the web are Netflix apps. Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon and Storyteller on Android are Netflix Games titles, which means a paid subscription and a signed-in account, not a normal Play purchase.

Never came to Android at all: Cut the Rope 3 and SpellTower+ are Apple Arcade exclusives. Good Sudoku, Blackbox and The Witness are iOS only. Any Android roundup listing them copied an iPhone article.

Two more to know about before you buy. Layton’s Mystery Journey is live at $15.99 with in-app purchases on top, holds 3.6 from just 520 ratings, and is region-limited. Mekorama is still described everywhere as the ad-free freeware gem, but Play now shows both a Contains ads badge and in-app purchases from $1.00 to $32.00, and it has not been updated since 28 December 2023.

How to check a puzzle game on Google Play before you install it

  1. Read the category line, not the title. Scroll past the screenshots to the genre. If a puzzle game is filed under Strategy, Adventure or Role Playing, the puzzle is advertising.
  2. Check both badges and the IAP range. Look for “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases”. Tap the IAP line to see the range; a ceiling above $99 tells you what the business model really is.
  3. Watch the store video, then compare it to the ad you saw. Different mechanic in each means the ad was a lie, and Play’s Misrepresentation policy is on your side.
  4. Check the last-updated date. Anything older than about two years may not install on a new phone because of Play’s target API rules. Open the listing on the phone you will play on.
  5. Sort reviews by lowest rating and read ten. Repeated “not like the ad”, “crashes” or “paywall after level 5” comments are the fastest signal you will get.
  6. Buy, then test within two hours. Google Play refunds a paid app automatically if you request it within two hours of purchase, which is exactly the safety net a $9.49 game with 70 ratings needs.

Bottom line

Buy Baba Is You at $6.99 if you want the best puzzle game on Android and you are willing to be beaten by it. Install Simon Tatham’s Puzzles first regardless, because it is free with no ads, no in-app purchases and forty-plus puzzle types.

Start the escape rooms with The Room at $0.99 and only buy Old Sins if the first one lands. Spend $0.99 on Mini Metro and $1.99 on Linelight for the two best cheap picks on the page.

Skip Layton’s Mystery Journey at $15.99 with a 3.6 rating, and skip Her Story until the Android port sits above 3.0. Treat any game whose ad shows a puzzle you cannot find in its store video as an ad farm and move on.

Do this now: open Google Play, install Simon Tatham’s Puzzles, and run the four-question test on the next puzzle ad that interrupts you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best puzzle game for Android in 2026?

Baba Is You. It costs $6.99 on Google Play, has no ads and no in-app purchases, and was updated on 9 February 2026. You solve levels by pushing the rule words themselves. The Room: Old Sins is the best escape room at $4.99, and Simon Tatham's Puzzles is the best free pick.

What is the best free puzzle game for Android with no ads?

Simon Tatham's Puzzles (name.boyle.chris.sgtpuzzles). It is free with no Contains ads badge and no In-app purchases badge, holds 4.9 stars from 16,579 ratings, and includes more than 40 logic puzzle types with infinite generated levels. Please, Touch The Artwork 2 is the only other pick on our list that is free with neither badge.

Which puzzle games work offline on Android?

Baba Is You, all four Room games, The House of Da Vinci 3, Underground Blossom, Monument Valley 2, Papers, Please, Poly Bridge 2, LIMBO, Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO, Mini Metro, Linelight and Simon Tatham's Puzzles all play without a connection. NYT Games needs one for daily puzzles, and Nonograms Katana needs one to download its community library first.

Why do puzzle game ads show gameplay that is not in the game?

Because it works, and enforcement is slow. On 30 September 2020 the UK Advertising Standards Authority ruled against Playrix over Homescapes and Gardenscapes ads, finding the pin-pull rescue puzzle appeared in only a tiny share of the game's thousands of levels. Google Play's Misrepresentation policy bans it too, but you should still check the store video yourself.

What is the hardest puzzle game on Android?

Baba Is You, at $6.99 with no hint system. After it, the ladder runs LOK Digital, Euclidea's later packs, Human Resource Machine's optimisation targets, Cosmic Express's final worlds and A Monster's Expedition. The original Snakebird is no longer on Google Play; only the easier Snakebird Primer at $7.99 remains.

Is Monument Valley still on Google Play or is it Netflix only?

It is on Google Play. Monument Valley costs $3.99 with 4.9 stars from 266,780 ratings, updated 2 March 2026. Monument Valley 2 is $3.99 with no in-app purchases at all. Monument Valley 3 is a free download with a $4.99 in-app unlock and was updated on 7 August 2026, and it is no longer Netflix-gated.
