Most “offline games” lists still recommend titles that quietly went online-only years ago, or they never say whether a game shows ads, costs money, or needs one online launch before it works on a plane. We did the boring part. Every game here has a live Google Play listing we opened on 21 August 2026. We recorded the price, the “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases” flags, the last update date, the install band, and what the developer’s own description says about offline play. No APK mirrors. No delisted games.

What “offline” actually means (3 tiers)
“Works offline” hides three different behaviours. We label every game on this page with one of them.
- Tier 1 — Fully offline. Install it, open it in airplane mode, play everything. Saves live on the phone. Stardew Valley, Balatro, Slay the Spire, Terraria, LIMBO, Monument Valley 2, The Room: Old Sins, Mindustry, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Geometry Dash.
- Tier 2 — Offline after first launch. The game needs one connected start to verify the licence, download extra data, or show you a login it then stops asking for. After that, single-player works anywhere. Minecraft, GTA: San Andreas, Dead Cells (DLC download), Bloons TD 6, Dead Trigger 2, Into the Dead 2, Plants vs. Zombies 2, Kingdom Rush Frontiers.
- Tier 3 — Offline core, online extras. The main loop plays without a connection, but events, multiplayer, cloud save, and reward ads do not. Hill Climb Racing 2, Shadow Fight 2, Subway Surfers, Dream League Soccer 2026, Vampire Survivors, Sudoku.com, The Battle of Polytopia.
Then there is a fourth group that does not belong on an offline list at all: games that refuse to open without a server. PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Call of Duty: Mobile, Genshin Impact, Clash of Clans, Asphalt Legends. We cover those in the online-only traps section, because other lists keep ranking them.
One honest note. The offline tier for each game comes from the developer’s Play Store description, the store’s own “Offline” tag, and the developer’s published FAQ. We did not re-install all 25 games in airplane mode for this article. Where a listing is vague, we say so, and the fix is always the same: open the game once on Wi-Fi, then test it with airplane mode on before you board.
How we picked (21 August 2026)
- Live US Play Store listing. If the official page did not load, the game is not here. That is why Real Racing 3, Retro Bowl, and Bad North are missing: their US listings did not resolve for us on the day, and we do not recommend games we cannot point you to.
- Ads and IAP flags exactly as Google shows them. A paid game can still carry an IAP flag for DLC. We note that.
- Last update date. Most picks were updated in 2026. A few older listings made the cut because they are finished games, not abandoned ones. We flag the date on each.
- Install band and score. We quote the store band (1M+, 100M+), not invented download counts.
- Offline wording. Does the developer say “play offline” in the listing? Does the store show the “Offline” tag? We treated that as the primary evidence.
- Genre spread. RPG, action, shooter, racing, puzzle, strategy, card, sports, arcade. One article should cover a whole flight, not one mood.
Famous games we cut on purpose: PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Call of Duty: Mobile, Genshin Impact, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars, Roblox, Asphalt Legends. All need a server to start. Asphalt is the most common mistake on other lists; its listing advertises offline mode, but the current build asks for a connection to load the garage and career.

ConcernedApe’s listing says it plainly: single-player that works offline with locally stored saves. The 1.6 content update reached Android in late 2024, and the store listing shows a fresh patch in June 2026, so it is in its best shape yet. Mobile gets the full PC game minus multiplayer, and it runs fine on a four-year-old mid-range phone.
Best for: long flights, commuters, anyone who wants one game for a year. Skip if: you want five-minute sessions; the early days are slow.
2. Minecraft

Survival and Creative worlds are stored on the phone. Once the game has launched once and you have either signed in to a Microsoft account or skipped it, you can build in airplane mode indefinitely. What needs a connection: Realms, the Marketplace, and cross-play. Mojang’s listing carries the store’s “Offline” tag. The IAP flag is for Marketplace skins and worlds, none of which you need.
Best for: kids, families sharing one tablet, creative builders. Skip if: you want a goal-driven game; Minecraft hands you nothing.
3. Terraria

Best for: players who found Minecraft aimless. Skip if: small-screen touch controls frustrate you; a 6.7-inch phone or a tablet helps.
4. Shattered Pixel Dungeon

Best for: players who want console-grade combat in a pocket. Skip if: you only play one-handed on the bus.
6. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

- PUBG Mobile — not offline. Every mode, including training, needs a server. There is no offline bot mode.
- Free Fire — not offline, same reason.
- Call of Duty: Mobile — not offline. Even the practice range requires a login.
- Asphalt Legends — the listing still talks about an offline mode, but the current build needs a connection to load the garage and career. Treat it as online. If you need offline racing, Hill Climb Racing 2 is the honest answer on this list.
- Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, Honkai: Star Rail — always online, no exceptions.
- Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars — server-side games. Nothing runs locally.
- Roblox — a platform, not a game, and entirely online.
- eFootball — online; Dream League Soccer is the offline football pick.
Offline games with no ads (free and paid)

Offline games under 100 MB and for low-end phones
The Play Store no longer shows a fixed size for many apps, so treat these as small by design rather than exact figures. From the list above, the lightest installs are Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Mindustry, Sudoku.com, and Geometry Dash. The Battle of Polytopia and Balatro are also light and run well on entry-level phones. Two good free extras that did not get a full entry: Unciv, a no-ads, no-IAP Civilization V remake updated on 20 August 2026, and Bloons TD 5 at $2.99 for phones that struggle with TD6’s 3D maps. Avoid GTA: San Andreas, Dead Trigger 2, and Dream League Soccer on anything with less than 3 GB of free space.
How to pick an offline Android game
- Decide paid or free. If you can spend $5, buy Stardew Valley or Dead Cells and forget about ads. If not, Mindustry and Shattered Pixel Dungeon cost nothing and show nothing.
- Check the listing flags. Open the Play Store page, scroll to “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases”, and read the description for the word offline.
- Install on Wi-Fi and open once. Let the game finish any extra download and dismiss any login. Tier 2 games need this step.
- Test in airplane mode before you leave. Toggle airplane mode, reopen the game, play one level. If it blocks you, delete it now and pick another from this page.
