Every other page on this query has the same three problems. It quotes prices that moved months ago, it calls games “fully offline” without saying what that means, and it keeps recommending Battle Chasers, Octopath Traveler and The World Ends With You — none of which you can buy on Google Play any more. We opened all 40 listings on 26 August 2026, wrote down the exact package id, price, both store flags, the last update date and the install band, and then classified every game against a published definition of “offline” instead of a vibe.

The three offline tiers (and why Tier 2 exists)

“Offline” describes three different behaviours, not one. We built this three-tier framework for our 25 best offline games for Android guide and we are reusing it here, game by game.

• Tier 1 — Fully offline. Install it, open it in airplane mode, play everything. Saves sit on the phone.
• Tier 2 — Offline after one connected launch. The game needs one online start to clear a licence check or pull extra data. After that it runs anywhere.
• Tier 3 — Offline core, online extras. The main campaign runs without a signal, but events, reward ads, arenas and cloud saves do not.

Here is the part nobody else explains. Tier 2 is not laziness by the developer — it is how Android’s paid-app licensing was designed to work.

Google’s own Play Licensing documentation says a licence check needs the licensing server to be reachable over the network. It then describes two policies a developer can choose. ServerManagedPolicy caches the licence answer so the app keeps working while the device is offline, such as on a plane; StrictPolicy caches nothing and only lets you in when the server replies.

That single design choice is the whole difference between a game you can open at 35,000 feet and one that shows you a spinner. A developer who picked StrictPolicy has built a paid game that cannot be played offline, and there is nothing you can do about it from the outside.

Google’s “Offline” tag is a clue, not proof

Some Play listings carry a small “Offline” label. We recorded it for every pick on 26 August 2026, and the results are messy enough to be worth publishing.

Look at the right column. FINAL FANTASY VII and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are single-player games from the late 1990s with no server component whatsoever, and neither carries the tag.

So the tag is developer-declared metadata, not a Google verification. We treat it as supporting evidence when it is there, and we never treat its absence as proof a game is online. Where it is missing, we say so and point you at the four-minute airplane test below.

The Play Pass asterisk nobody mentions

A large share of the best premium offline RPGs on Android are bundled with Google Play Pass, and that changes the buying decision completely. Play Pass is a subscription that hands you a catalogue of paid games with no ads and no in-app purchases inside them.

Do the arithmetic once. FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered alone costs $20.99. Several months of Play Pass costs less than that, and covers a stack of the games on this page at the same time.

That last row matters. Other pages claim FINAL FANTASY VII is on Play Pass because Square Enix named one of its store trailers “FINAL FANTASY VII Google PlayPass EN”. A video filename is not a store badge, so we are not repeating the claim.

Now the honest half of the Play Pass pitch. A Play Pass copy is a licence tied to a live subscription, not a game you own.

That means two things for an offline reader. A Play Pass copy will want a periodic connection to revalidate, so it is Tier 2 at best and never Tier 1. And every one of those games disappears from your phone the month you stop paying, 60-hour save file included.

Our rule: use Play Pass to try eight games cheaply, then buy outright the one or two you are still playing in month three.

The KEMCO price trick, explained once

KEMCO publishes dozens of offline turn-based JRPGs on Google Play, and almost every one of them exists twice. There is a free build with ads, and a paid twin whose title starts with “[Premium]”.

The free build is a demo with a business model. Ads gate the grind, and consumable in-app purchases sell you your way past it. The “[Premium]” build strips the ads and the progression gating for one payment.

Three things about that catalogue that no competitor writes down:

• The premium build still shows an In-app purchases flag. [Premium] RPG Sword of Elpisia costs $7.99 with no ads, and still lists in-app items at $0.99 to $49.99. Those are optional stat boosters, not a paywall — but the flag is not a mistake, and paying does not remove it.
• Nobody should ever pay list price. These titles rotate through deep sales constantly. On 26 August 2026 we found RPG Asdivine Hearts at $0.99 against a $7.99 list price. Wishlist the premium build and wait.
• The naming is not consistent. Some paid builds are called “[Premium] X”, some are just “RPG X” while the free one is “RPG X with Ads”. Match the package id, not the title.

Do that and you get a 20 to 40 hour offline JRPG, saved locally, for about a dollar. That is a price Square Enix cannot touch.

Is this the version you think it is?

Four of the biggest offline RPG searches on Android land on a port that is not the game people read about. This is the single most expensive mistake on the Play Store, because these are $10 to $21 purchases.

The Final Fantasy Tactics one catches the most people. Square Enix put out a full remaster with new voice acting and a redrawn interface, and its trailers are everywhere.

That trailer is for The Ivalice Chronicles. You cannot buy it on Android. What $13.99 buys you on Google Play is the older War of the Lions conversion, which is still excellent and still the deepest tactics RPG on the platform — just not that.

Two more pairs worth knowing. Exiled Kingdoms ships as a free app with chapter unlocks and a separate paid “Full” app. Dead Cells has DLC packs sold as in-app purchases rather than separate listings, which is why a paid game shows an IAP flag.

How we picked (26 August 2026)

• A live US Play Store listing, opened by hand. If the page did not resolve on 26 August 2026, the game is not on this list. That is why FINAL FANTASY IX, Romancing SaGa 2 and Star Traders: Frontiers are absent even though they belong on paper.
• Price, ads flag and IAP flag exactly as Google shows them. A paid game can still carry an In-app purchases flag. We say so every time instead of pretending it is a clean buy.
• Last update date on every entry. A 2023 listing is a real risk as Google raises the target-API floor, and we flag the stale ones rather than burying them.
• Install band and rating count quoted from the store. We never invent a download number, and we do not treat 103 reviews the same as 171,000.
• Offline evidence, ranked. Developer wording in the listing first, the store’s “Offline” tag second, our own tier judgement third.
• Sub-genre spread. JRPG ports, mobile-original JRPGs, western CRPGs, action RPGs, roguelikes and free RPGs. “RPG” means six different things to six different readers.

What we did not do. We did not reinstall all 40 games and run each one in airplane mode. Where a listing is vague or the “Offline” tag is missing, we label the game Tier 2 and tell you to test it yourself.

We also did not publish download sizes for most picks, and here is why. Google Play’s web listings no longer show a download size, so every list quoting neat MB figures is copying an APK mirror or an old cached page.

Where a developer publishes the number themselves, we use it. Shattered Pixel Dungeon’s own GitHub release page ships a 29.5 MB Google Play build for v3.3.8 dated 23 March 2026, which matches the store’s update date exactly. Everything else, you check on your own phone under Settings > Apps.

One more note for readers outside the US. All prices here are US Play Store figures; the Square Enix ports in particular are dramatically cheaper in Indian rupees and several other regions.

The JRPG shelf: console ports you buy once

1. CHRONO TRIGGER (Upgrade Ver.)

The best offline RPG on Android, and the cheapest way into premium Square Enix. It is a 25-hour time-travel story with a combat system that still feels modern, and the listing carries the store’s “Offline” tag. Square Enix was still patching it in December 2025, eight years after the mobile relaunch.

The catch is that 3.8 score. It is dragged down by a long tail of one-star reviews from the disastrous 2018 launch build, and Play never resets a score. The current version is a different, much better game, but the menus are small on a phone and Square Enix almost never discounts it.

Best for: anyone who wants one great offline RPG and does not want to think about it. Skip if: you need modern 3D visuals.

2. FINAL FANTASY TACTICS: The War of the Lions

$13.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 27 March 2026 · 500,000+ installs · 4.0 from 19,689 ratings.

The deepest tactics RPG on Android and a near-perfect commute game, because turns wait for you and nothing is timed. March 2026 makes it one of the most recently patched Square Enix ports on the store.

Two catches. This is the 2007 PSP conversion, not the 2025 Ivalice Chronicles remaster, and the PSP version’s slowdown during spell animations was never fully fixed. Its listing has no “Offline” tag, so run the airplane test after your first launch.

Best for: chess players, commuters, anyone who liked Fire Emblem. Skip if: you wanted the remaster.

3. DRAGON QUEST III

$9.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, fully offline · Updated 11 June 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.6 from 2,680 ratings.

The best-rated Square Enix port on Android at 4.6 stars, and it was patched in June 2026. You build your own four-person party from a class list, which makes it the most replayable of the cheap JRPG ports.

The catch is what it is not. This is the mobile port of the Super Famicom version, not the 2024 HD-2D remake, and the HD-2D remake has no Android release at all. The UI is portrait-only and scaled for an older phone.

Best for: your first Dragon Quest. Skip if: you came here for the HD-2D version.

4. FINAL FANTASY VI

$14.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 3 October 2025 · 50,000+ installs · 3.5 from 1,669 ratings.

The most-searched offline JRPG on Android and the peak of the Pixel Remaster line. Kazuko Shibuya redrew the sprites, the soundtrack was rearranged, and the whole 30-hour opera runs from local saves with no account and no events.

Read the reviews before you pay. That 3.5 score is not about the game — the top negative reviews describe hard crashes on screen transitions, with Figaro Castle named repeatedly. There is also no official gamepad support, which stings on a 40-hour RPG.

Best for: people who already know they want FFVI. Skip if: a crash mid-dungeon would end your relationship with the game.

5. FINAL FANTASY VII

$15.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 6 June 2025 · 500,000+ installs · 4.0 from 14,142 ratings.

A complete 40-hour campaign for one payment, with optional 3x speed and no-encounter toggles that make it genuinely finishable on a phone. It is rated Teen and has no online component in the campaign at all.

Two honest warnings. This is the 1998 PC build, so the pre-rendered backgrounds look soft on a modern AMOLED panel and the character models are blocky. And no, we could not confirm it is on Play Pass, whatever other lists tell you.

Best for: a first playthrough on a long trip. Skip if: you have only played the Remake and expect it to look like that.

6. FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered

$20.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2 · Updated 22 April 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.2 from 2,496 ratings.

The most expensive game on this page, and the highest-rated of the numbered Final Fantasy ports at 4.2 stars. April 2026 is a genuinely recent patch, which is more than you can say for most $20 ports on Android.

The catch is the Junction system, the most opaque progression design in the series. New players routinely quit in disc one because nothing explains how drawing magic works. At $20.99 this is the one to wait for a sale on.

Best for: returning fans. Skip if: this would be your first Final Fantasy.

7. DRAGON QUEST V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

$14.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, fully offline · Updated 3 October 2025 · 50,000+ installs · 4.2 from 2,988 ratings.

The generational story — you play a boy, then a man, then a father — is still the best-written thing in the series, and you recruit monsters as party members. It carries the “Offline” tag, so it is a clean Tier 1.

The catch is that this is a reduced port of the DS remake. The party is smaller than on DS, some DS-era extras are gone, and the interface is portrait-only and scaled for a 2014 phone.

Best for: readers who want a story, not a stat sheet. Skip if: you own the DS version.

8. DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

The only fully 3D open-field JRPG of this scale that runs offline on a phone, and it does carry the “Offline” tag. Square Enix was still patching it in March 2026.

We are going to talk you out of it. At 3.4 stars this is the lowest-rated Dragon Quest on Play, and the reasons are real: the mobile conversion swaps the orchestral score for synth, removes free camera control, and drops the voice acting the PS2 and 3DS versions had. That is a lot to give up for $19.99.

Best for: people who have finished every other Dragon Quest. Skip if: you have a 3DS in a drawer.

9. Monster Hunter Stories

Capcom’s only premium offline RPG on Android, and the strongest non-Square JRPG here. It is 60-plus hours of hatching and raising monsters with turn-based combat and zero gacha, and the March 2026 update proves it is still maintained.

Two catches. It is $19.99 and a multi-gigabyte install, so download it on Wi-Fi. Capcom also publishes a free “The Adventure Begins” prologue app that has not been updated since 2020 — installing that one by mistake is the most common complaint about this game.

Best for: anyone who wanted Pokemon with better combat. Skip if: your phone is short on storage.

10. Secret of Mana

The cheapest Square Enix action RPG on the store, and real-time combat suits a touchscreen better than the menu-heavy JRPGs do. It carries the “Offline” tag and was patched in February 2026.

The catch is the ring menu, which was designed for a SNES pad and is genuinely awkward on glass. The mobile version is also single-player only, so the three-player co-op that defined the original is simply gone.

Best for: a cheap, short, colourful offline RPG. Skip if: fiddly menus during combat make you quit.

11. FINAL FANTASY DIMENSIONS

A mobile-original job-system JRPG in the Final Fantasy V mould, rated Everyone, with the “Offline” tag on the listing. If you have already played the numbered ports, this is the one that still has something new in it.

The catch is its history. It launched as an episodic game sold chapter by chapter, and the pacing still shows those seams. The pixel art is 2010s mobile pastiche rather than real 16-bit assets, and its sequel sits far lower in the ratings — buy this one, not that one.

Best for: job-system fans. Skip if: you want a story with a strong through-line.

Mobile-original and indie JRPGs

12. Ex Astris

The newest genuinely premium RPG on Android, from GRYPHLINE, the Arknights studio’s premium label. Console-grade 3D, a real-time-with-timing combat system, no gacha, no energy, no login — $9.99 and it is yours.

Two catches. The main story runs roughly 8 to 12 hours, which is short next to a $14.99 Square Enix port. It is also a heavy 3D install that will thermal-throttle a mid-range chip after 30 minutes.

Best for: readers who want something made for phones in this decade. Skip if: you measure value in hours per dollar.

13. Doom & Destiny

Doom & Destiny holds 4.8 stars from nearly 28,000 people, better than every Square Enix port on this page, and it costs $4.99. Four nerds get dragged into a fantasy world; you get a 20-hour turn-based JRPG with buy-once pricing and local saves.

Two catches. The nerd-reference humour is relentless and a lot of readers will find it exhausting, and the store rates it Mature 17+. It also has not been patched since September 2024.

Its sequel Doom & Destiny Advanced costs $4.99, holds 4.7 stars from 11,084 ratings, and carries the “Offline” tag.

Best for: the best rating-to-price ratio on Google Play. Skip if: you want a straight-faced JRPG.

14. RPG Asdivine Hearts

KEMCO’s best-known series and the cheapest way to test whether their catalogue is for you. We found it at $0.99 against a $7.99 list price on 26 August 2026, with no ads and a May 2026 patch.

The catch is the IAP flag, which is still there in the paid build — those are optional stat boosters, not a paywall. The story is generic light-novel fare and the combat is standard menu turn-based with no twist.

Best for: a dollar’s worth of 25-hour offline JRPG. Skip if: you need a memorable script.

15. [Premium] RPG Sword of Elpisia

The cleanest current entry point into the KEMCO catalogue: a 30-hour turn-based JRPG with a skill-board progression system, no ads, and an April 2026 patch. KEMCO ships a free ad-supported twin, so you can test the exact game before paying.

Two catches. That $0.99 to $49.99 IAP range in a paid game is startling until you learn it is optional boosters. And with only 970 ratings, you are buying on the catalogue’s reputation rather than this title’s.

Best for: trying the free build first, then buying this one on sale. Skip if: you have played three KEMCO games and found them samey.

16. Dungeon Village 2

4.8 stars from over 50,000 people, which ties it with Dead Cells and Doom & Destiny for the best score of any paid pick on this page. Kairosoft’s whole business is buy-once offline pixel sims, so there is no energy meter and nothing to log into.

Be clear on what it is. You run the town that adventurers pass through, rather than playing an adventurer, so it only half answers an “RPG” search. Kairosoft also publishes free ad-supported versions of many titles, so match the package id.

Best for: long sessions where you want to build, not fight. Skip if: you want to swing the sword yourself.

The western CRPG shelf

17. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

The biggest install base of any premium CRPG on Google Play, and a 30-hour BioWare campaign with a genuinely famous twist. There is no online component anywhere in it.

The catch is age. May 2024 is the stalest listing among the big-name ports, and reviewers specifically report companion quests that never trigger, a Jolee force-point bug at high levels, and crashes on Yavin. Aspyr never brought KOTOR II to Android, so the story stops on a cliffhanger.

Best for: Star Wars fans who missed it in 2003. Skip if: you need a game that will still install in two years.

18. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition

The best phone-shaped CRPG on this list, because it is roughly 90% reading and a phone is very good at reading. It also carries the “Offline” tag and, unusually for Beamdog, has no in-app purchases at all.

Two catches. Combat is the weakest part of the game and the Modron Maze is full of it. May 2025 makes this the oldest of the Beamdog ports, and there is zero hand-holding for D&D 2nd Edition rules.

Best for: readers who want a novel with dice. Skip if: you skip dialogue.

19. Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition

The cleanest of the five Beamdog ports: no ads, no IAP, the “Offline” tag, and a July 2026 patch. You roll all six party members yourself, so it is the purest offline tactics experience in the set.

The catch is that it is almost pure combat. There is very little roleplaying, which disappoints readers arriving from Baldur’s Gate, and creating six characters before you can start is a 30-minute wall. The listing shows multiplayer tags; those are online-only extras and the campaign is not.

Best for: a tablet and a long weekend. Skip if: you want conversation and choices.

20. Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition

The IAP flag is real. The premium modules such as Darkness over Daggerford are paid add-ons on top of your $9.99, and the persistent-world servers that made Neverwinter Nights famous need a connection. Only the official campaigns are offline, and it is the largest install of the four.

Best for: D&D 3rd Edition players. Skip if: you assumed $9.99 bought everything.

21. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

The canonical offline CRPG on Android: 100-plus hours, entirely local saves, and a genuinely current build patched in July 2026. If you want the deepest single purchase on this page, this is it.

Now the bad news. At 3.1 stars from over 25,000 ratings this is the lowest-scoring pick we recommend, Beamdog has a long record of update regressions on Android, and the Infinity Engine interface is punishing under six inches. The Siege of Dragonspear expansion is also a separate paid app, which surprises buyers.

Best for: tablet owners with patience. Skip if: you only play on a phone.

22. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition

Bigger, better paced and better rated than the first game at the same $9.99, and it includes the Throne of Bhaal content. Same July 2026 patch date, so both games are on the current build.

The catch is that it assumes you finished Baldur’s Gate. Starting here at level seven with an import-character prompt confuses newcomers badly, and the install is bigger than BG1’s.

Best for: anyone who already finished the first game. Skip if: this is your first CRPG.

23. Atom RPG

$3.99 on the day we checked · No ads · IAP $0.99 · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 17 August 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 3.9 from 3,899 ratings.

The honest answer to “is there a Fallout on Android”. It is a post-apocalyptic Soviet isometric CRPG with real dialogue trees, and at $3.99 on 26 August 2026 it was the best CRPG value on the store. The 17 August 2026 update makes it one of the most actively maintained games here.

Three catches. It carries an IAP flag despite being a paid game, the inventory and crafting UI is cramped on a phone, and the English translation from Russian is uneven. It is rated Mature 17+ and it is brutal in the first two hours.

Best for: Fallout 1 and 2 players. Skip if: you want to be eased in.

24. The Quest

$7.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, fully offline · Updated 7 August 2026 · 50,000+ installs · 4.3 from 2,054 ratings.

The closest thing on Android to an old Elder Scrolls game: hand-painted first-person exploration, step-based movement, and an open world you can get properly lost in. It started life on Palm OS and Redshift was still updating it on 7 August 2026.

The catch is the expansion model. Each expansion is a separate paid app on Play, so the true cost of “all of The Quest” is well above $7.99. The static hand-painted look also reads as dated if you are expecting 3D.

Best for: Might & Magic and Daggerfall veterans. Skip if: you need animation and voice acting.

Action RPGs and roguelikes

25. Grimvalor

Free with a $6.99 unlock · Contains ads · IAP · Tier 2, “Offline” tag present · Updated 18 August 2026 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 131,645 ratings.

The most popular premium-tier action RPG on Android, with hand-tuned touch combat that actually feels good. Direlight’s own site pitches it as a game you play offline on a commute, the store shows the “Offline” tag, and it was updated on 18 August 2026.

Here is the correction. Every other list still calls this “a $6.99 premium game”. As of 26 August 2026 the listing is a free install carrying both a “Contains ads” flag and an in-app purchase: act one is free with ads, and $6.99 unlocks acts two through five.

Best for: trying a great action RPG for nothing, then paying once. Skip if: you expected an ad-free premium download.

26. Exiled Kingdoms RPG

Free · No ads · IAP $0.99–$5.99 · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 21 August 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 131,419 ratings.

A one-person homage to Divine Divinity that is still being patched a decade after launch — the last update landed five days before we checked. Free with no ads at all, which is rare enough to be worth saying twice.

The catch is the dual listing. This free app gates later chapters behind in-app purchases, while a separate paid “Full” app is the one-payment unlock — and that paid one also shows an IAP flag. Content updates from a solo developer arrive years apart, and the art is functional rather than pretty.

Best for: trying a real isometric RPG for free tonight. Skip if: you want frequent new content.

27. Dead Cells

$4.79 · No ads · IAP $0.49–$7.99 · Tier 2, “Offline” tag present · Updated 8 September 2025 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 132,167 ratings.

The best pure action game on Android at 4.8 stars, rebuilt for touch by Playdigious with an auto-hit option and 60 fps on mid-range hardware. Our general offline games guide called it the best offline RPG on Android; this dedicated page revises that call.

Here is why. Dead Cells has permadeath runs, almost no persistent character build and no story, so it is a roguelite wearing RPG clothes — CHRONO TRIGGER takes the RPG crown instead. The IAP flag is DLC, and buying a pack means one connected download.

Best for: 20-minute sessions with real combat depth. Skip if: you want a character who grows across a campaign.

28. Slay the Spire

$9.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 20 July 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.3 from 29,715 ratings.

The best value per hour of anything on this page. It is a roguelike deckbuilder with four characters, endless ascension levels, no ads, no in-app purchases, and a July 2026 build.

Two things to know. The Play publisher is now listed as Balor Games even though the package id still says com.humble, so searching for a Humble Bundle listing finds nothing. It is also a deckbuilder with RPG scaffolding rather than a character RPG — if that is what you want, our best card games for Android guide goes deeper.

Best for: one purchase you are still playing next year. Skip if: card games bore you.

29. Loop Hero

Free to try, unlock $0.49–$3.89 · No ads · IAP · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 1 August 2024 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 28,125 ratings.

The cheapest way onto this list: install free, and the full unlock tops out at $3.89. Your hero walks a loop automatically while you place cards to shape the world around him, which makes it a genuinely one-handed RPG.

Two catches. The combat is fully automatic, so readers expecting to control a character will be annoyed within minutes. The listing has not moved since 1 August 2024, making it the second-stalest pick we recommend.

Best for: playing on a crowded train. Skip if: auto-battle feels like watching, not playing.

30. Titan Quest: Legendary Edition

$8.80 on the day we checked · No ads · IAP $4.99 · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 8 September 2025 · 50,000+ installs · 3.9 from 4,230 ratings.

The Diablo-style pick, and the version worth buying: base game plus the expansions in one purchase from HandyGames. We saw it at $8.80 on 26 August 2026, well below its usual list price.

Two catches. There is an older, separate Titan Quest listing that most lists link to instead, and buying expansions there works differently — check the package id before you pay. Legendary Edition also carries an IAP flag and has no “Offline” tag, so airplane-test it.

Best for: loot grinding with no server between you and the loot. Skip if: you have a small screen; the UI is dense.

31. Cat Quest II

$4.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 13 March 2026 · 1,000+ installs · 4.5 from 103 ratings.

The friendliest action RPG here: one-thumb combat, a real open world, cat puns, and a 10-hour campaign that never demands a tablet. No ads, no in-app purchases, and the “Offline” tag on the listing.

Be honest about the sample size. 103 ratings and a 1,000+ install band means this listing was re-established recently, so there is almost no community troubleshooting if it misbehaves on your device. Treat the 4.5 score as provisional.

Best for: a light, funny offline RPG for a short trip. Skip if: you want a listing with a track record.

32. Siralim Ultimate

$7.49 on the day we checked · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 24 October 2025 · 10,000+ installs · 4.7 from 1,356 ratings.

The deepest monster-collecting game on Android by a distance: over a thousand creatures, all of them fusable, with genuinely endless procedural content. No ads and no in-app purchases at all.

The catch is onboarding, or the total absence of it. The UI is a wall of stats and the game assumes you already finished an earlier Siralim. A 10,000+ install band also means almost nobody is reporting device-specific bugs.

Best for: people who want a spreadsheet with monsters in it. Skip if: you need a tutorial.

33. Crashlands 2

$9.99 · No ads · No IAP · Tier 2, no “Offline” tag · Updated 10 April 2026 · 100,000+ installs · 4.7 from 3,231 ratings.

The freshest big premium RPG on Android — a 2026 release rather than a port. It is a crafting action RPG with a funny script, no ads and no in-app purchases, from Butterscotch Shenanigans.

Two catches. The store listing has no “Offline” tag and Butterscotch’s cross-save is account-linked, so we classify it Tier 2 until you airplane-test it. The volume of crafting recipes overwhelms a lot of players by the second biome.

Best for: a big new game that is not a 1998 port. Skip if: crafting menus tire you out.

34. Evoland 2

The best price-per-hour on this entire page on the day we looked. It walks you through 30 years of RPG history, changing art style and combat system as the story moves through time, and it runs 20 hours.

Two catches. The genre-switching means the shoot-em-up and card-game segments are mandatory whether you enjoy them or not, and the time-travel plot is thin. The $0.89 price is a promotion, so check before you assume.

Best for: the cheapest genuinely good offline RPG on Google Play. Skip if: you want one consistent game.

Free offline RPGs

35. Shattered Pixel Dungeon

Free · No ads · IAP $4.99–$19.99 (supporter only) · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 23 March 2026 · 5,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 171,363 ratings.

The best free offline RPG on Android, full stop: 4.8 stars from over 171,000 people, no ads, open source, and six playable heroes with new content roughly every quarter. It is also the one pick whose size we can prove — 29.5 MB for v3.3.8, published by the developer on GitHub.

Two corrections to what other pages say. It is not “no ads and no IAP”: the listing carries an in-app purchase flag at $4.99 to $19.99, and those are optional supporter donations that unlock nothing. The game itself is punishing, so expect dozens of deaths before a first win.

Best for: low-end phones, tiny storage, zero budget. Skip if: permadeath makes you angry.

36. Vampire’s Fall: Origins RPG

Free · Contains ads · IAP $0.99–$50.00 · Tier 3, “Offline” tag present · Updated 29 July 2026 · 10,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 663,778 ratings.

663,778 ratings is more than every Square Enix port on this page combined, and the developer’s own store pitch ends with the word “Offline”. It is a long, genuinely deep turn-based RPG with real character building, and it costs nothing.

The catch is the economy. Progression is tuned around watching reward ads and buying convenience packs, so playing it on a plane is measurably slower than playing it on Wi-Fi. Arena and clan features need a connection, which is why this is Tier 3 and not Tier 1.

Best for: the biggest free offline RPG campaign on Android. Skip if: ad-gated progression ruins a game for you.

37. Moonshades Offline Dungeon RPG

Free · Contains ads · IAP $0.99–$54.99 · Tier 3 · Updated 3 August 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.7 from 148,183 ratings.

The first-person grid crawler that actually ranks when people search for an offline dungeon RPG, and for once the store title is accurate. It is small, low-spec friendly and completely playable on a plane, with a 4.7 score from nearly 150,000 people.

The catch is the free-to-play economy underneath it. Gem purchases and rewarded video are pushed constantly, and the IAP ceiling is $54.99. Treat it as the best free light pick, not as a rival to a $15 Square Enix port.

Best for: low storage, low budget, long flight. Skip if: you want a clean premium experience.

38. Epic Conquest 2

Free · Contains ads · IAP $0.99–$69.99 · Tier 3 · Updated 28 April 2026 · 1,000,000+ installs · 4.3 from 123,271 ratings.

The free action RPG that Android gaming communities actually recommend: console-style combat, four playable characters, a real story, and no gacha pulls anywhere in it. Gaco Games shipped its last update on 28 April 2026.

Two catches. It is a small studio, so content volume is modest next to a Square Enix port and updates are slow. It carries both a “Contains ads” flag and in-app purchases up to $69.99, so it is Tier 3 rather than a clean offline buy.

Best for: free action RPG combat that does not feel cheap. Skip if: you want 40 hours of content.

39. Pathos: Nethack Codex

Free · No ads · No IAP · Tier 1, “Offline” tag present · Updated 18 February 2026 · 500,000+ installs · 4.6 from 8,793 ratings.

Free, no ads, and no in-app purchases — all three at once, which almost nothing on Google Play manages. It is a proper NetHack rule set with 13 classes and a touch interface that genuinely works, and it is tiny.

The catch is that it is NetHack, so the opacity is the design. There is no tutorial, nothing explains item identification, and you will die to things you had no way to see coming. Support lives on Discord and Reddit rather than a helpdesk.

Best for: the best under-100 MB offline RPG on Android. Skip if: you want to be told the rules.

40. Eternium

Free · No ads · IAP $0.99–$99.99 · Tier 3 · Updated 4 August 2026 · 10,000,000+ installs · 4.8 from 2,689,799 ratings.

2.69 million ratings at 4.8 stars, no ads, and the best touch combat scheme on Android — you swipe to cast rather than tapping buttons. It is the largest and best-rated free action RPG on the platform by a wide margin.

This is our honesty test case. Making Fun’s own description says the game plays offline only after the content download finishes, and only apart from a couple of online-only features, and the listing was advertising a timed season on the day we checked. That is Tier 3, not the “fully offline” every other list claims, and the IAP ceiling is $99.99.

Best for: free Diablo-style loot on a phone. Skip if: you are boarding a flight in ten minutes with nothing downloaded.

Best offline RPGs under 100 MB

Start with the honest part: Google Play’s web listings no longer publish a download size, so any list quoting exact MB figures for 40 games is guessing. We only publish a size when the developer does.

The one we can prove is Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Its GitHub release page ships a 29.5 MB Google Play build for v3.3.8, dated 23 March 2026, which matches the Play listing’s update date exactly.

For the rest, these are small by design rather than by measurement:

• Pathos: Nethack Codex — free, no ads, no IAP, 4.6 from 8,793 ratings. The best small pick on the store.
• Caves (Roguelike) — free with ads and IAP, 1,000,000+ installs, 4.4 from 34,149 ratings, updated 22 July 2026. Runs on genuinely old hardware.
• Grim Quest - Old School RPG — free with ads and IAP, 4.7 from 89,485 ratings, updated 2 August 2026, “Offline” tag present. Static illustrations, so it weighs almost nothing.
• Powerlust: Action RPG Offline — free with ads and IAP, 1,000,000+ installs, 4.6 from 28,289 ratings, updated 17 August 2026.
• Knights of Pen and Paper 3 RPG — free with ads and IAP, 500,000+ installs, 4.3 from 15,834 ratings, updated 10 July 2026.
• RPG Asdivine Hearts and the rest of the KEMCO pixel line — small installs, big campaigns.

Definitely not under 100 MB: FINAL FANTASY VII, FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered, DRAGON QUEST VIII, Monster Hunter Stories, Ex Astris and Crashlands 2 are all multi-gigabyte installs. Download those on Wi-Fi and check your free space first.

To see what a game really weighs, install it and open Settings > Apps on your phone. That figure is the only one that is true for your device.

Free offline RPGs with no ads

Three games on this page are free and carry no “Contains ads” flag at all: Shattered Pixel Dungeon, Pathos: Nethack Codex and Exiled Kingdoms. Eternium also shows no ads flag, but it is Tier 3 because of its content download and timed seasons.

Only Pathos is free with no ads and no in-app purchases. Shattered Pixel Dungeon’s IAP is a supporter tip that unlocks nothing, and Exiled Kingdoms sells chapter unlocks.

Everything else in the free tier — Vampire’s Fall: Origins, Moonshades, Epic Conquest 2, Grim Quest, Otherworld Legends (4.7 from 202,003 ratings, updated 13 August 2026), Caves and Powerlust — carries ads. In airplane mode the ads cannot load, but neither can the reward ads that speed up progression, so the game gets slower.

Saves, gamepads and abandonment risk

Offline RPGs have a problem that online games do not: your 60-hour save lives on one phone. Most of the Square Enix ports have no cloud save, so changing handsets can end a playthrough.

Before you start a long campaign, decide where the save is going to live. Games built on Play Games save sync will follow you to a new phone; a $19.99 port with local-only saves will not.

Then there is abandonment. Three picks here have not been patched in a long time, and that matters as Google raises the target-API floor for new devices.

• Star Wars: KOTOR — last updated 13 May 2024. The stalest big-name port we still recommend.
• Loop Hero — last updated 1 August 2024.
• Doom & Destiny and Doom & Destiny Advanced — both last updated 5 September 2024.
• Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance — $12.99, last updated 12 May 2023, 10,000+ installs, 4.6 from only 1,622 ratings. We left it out of the main list for exactly that reason.

Gamepads change these games more than any other genre. The Infinity Engine ports, Titan Quest and Grimvalor are transformed by a controller, while FINAL FANTASY VI has no official gamepad support at all. Our guide to Android games with gamepad support covers which pads pair cleanly.

One more boundary worth naming. Games like Terraria sit next to this list — deep progression, loot, bosses — without being RPGs in the sense this page uses, and we cover those in the general offline games guide instead.

The delisting graveyard: offline RPGs you cannot buy any more

Every one of these still appears on lists ranking for this query in 2026. None of them has a live Google Play listing we could open on 26 August 2026.

Square Enix publishes service-end notices for its mobile titles on its own support bridge site, which is the only place worth checking before you go hunting for an old port.

Two more traps that are live but do not belong here. Another Eden is marketed as a solo JRPG with no time-limited content, which readers hear as offline — it is an always-connected live-service game. Single-player is not the same thing as offline, and gacha titles belong in our best gacha games for Android guide instead.

Finally, the emulation question, answered plainly. A lot of the classics people want — Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy X, most of the SNES catalogue — were never officially ported to Android, which is why searches for them end up on emulator forums. How to prove an Android RPG really works offline in 4 minutes

Google Play gives you a short self-service refund window on app and game purchases, described in Google’s own refund help page. That turns a gamble into a test you can run before your money is committed.

1. Buy and install on Wi-Fi. Do it at home, not at the airport. Big ports like Monster Hunter Stories and FINAL FANTASY VII pull gigabytes on first install.
2. Launch it once while connected. Let it finish any extra download, dismiss any optional login, and reach the title screen. This is the connected launch that a Tier 2 licence check needs.
