The best offline Android games under 500MB in 2026 are Mindustry (75 MB), Terraria (172 MB), and Shattered Pixel Dungeon (32 MB). Mindustry is free, has no ads, and has no in-app purchases. Terraria is the paid sandbox that still fits a low-storage phone. Subway Surfers is 476 MB — it scrapes under the line, it is not a 50 MB game any more. Every size below was measured on 28 August 2026 as the full Play package. Offline status follows our 21 August airplane-mode rules.

What “under 500MB” and “offline” mean here
Two filters. Both have to pass.
- Size. We measured the complete Play package on 28 August 2026 — every architecture, density, and language bundled together. Your phone gets a split of that package, so the number is a ceiling. If we say 172 MB, you will not download more than that to install.
- Offline. The campaign or main loop must run with no Wi-Fi after install (or after one first launch). PUBG, Free Fire, COD Mobile, and Genshin fail this test. They need a server to open.
We already keep a longer offline list with no size cap. GTA: San Andreas and Minecraft live there. They blow past 500 MB, so they are not here. That split is the point of this page.

Factory builder plus tower defense, open source, and the best free install on this page. Campaign and custom maps run with no signal. Local co-op can use a hotspot. The source is public on GitHub, which is why it never grew an ad SDK.
Best for: hours per megabyte. Skip if: you want a tutorial that holds your hand.
2. Terraria — 172 MB

The 2D sandbox with bosses, loot, and wiring. Android has Journey’s End. Worlds save on the phone. Other “small game” lists still quote launch-era sizes; 172 MB is what we measured in August 2026, and it still sits well under 500.
Best for: a trip with a story. Skip if: you need Minecraft’s 3D world — that one is not under 500 MB.
3. Shattered Pixel Dungeon — 32 MB
Free · No ads · Optional tip jar · Fully offline · 4.79 from 171,000+ ratings.
Permadeath dungeon crawls in 20 to 60 minutes. Tiny install, no ads, still patched in 2026. If you have almost no space, start here.
4. Subway Surfers — 476 MB
Free · Ads · IAP · Offline core · 1B+ installs.
This is the honesty pick. Endless run, missions, and characters work in airplane mode. Season hunts and the leaderboard do not. We measured 476 MB. Pages that still say 50 MB are copying a number from about 2014. It fits 500 MB with 24 MB to spare. Barely.
Best for: kids, one-thumb play. Skip if: you are at 480 MB free; pick Mindustry instead.
5. The Battle of Polytopia — 168 MB
Free · No ads · Optional tribes · Offline core.
Civilization in about 20 minutes. Perfection and Domination run offline. Online multiplayer does not. No ads. Free tribes are enough for a flight.
6. Shadow Fight 2 — 163 MB
Free · Ads · IAP · Offline core · 100M+ installs.
Story fights, tournaments, and survival work without a connection. Raids do not. Energy timers still tick. Treat it as 20-minute rounds, not a 4-hour grind, and it is the best fighter that fits.
7. Alto’s Odyssey — 119 MB
Free · Ads · IAP · Offline once installed.
The sequel to Alto’s Adventure. Adventure is 84 MB if you want smaller; Odyssey is the prettier desert run and still under 500. Other lists still quote 67 MB. We measured 119 MB.
Best for: headphones, night mode. Skip if: you hate ads on Wi-Fi; they vanish in airplane mode.
8. Unciv — 27 MB

An open-source Civilization V-style 4X. A hundred-turn empire in 27 MB. No ads, no purchases, still patched. The learning curve is the original Civ curve.
Best for: strategy fans with no budget. Skip if: you want a polished tutorial.

The original hill climb, not the sequel. Adventure stages run offline. We measured 161 MB. Lists that say 40 MB are stale. Hill Climb Racing 2 is the newer game; its size was not in our August package pass, so we kept the one we measured.
Best for: physics goofs on any phone. Skip if: you want circuit racing.

Classic slice. Classic ads when you are online. Classic airplane-mode quiet. 371 MB, not the 30 MB people remember. Still under 500, still the fastest five-minute game here.
Best for: handing the phone to a child. Skip if: 371 MB feels silly for fruit.

Barry, the lab, the jetpack. Events want a connection. The run itself does not. 276 MB measured. Half a Subway Surfers, and usually more fun for adults.
12. Plants vs. Zombies — 125 MB

The original lawn defense, not PvZ 2. 125 MB. The eleven-year-old campaign is the whole point and it does not phone home. PvZ 2 is bigger and pushier. Take this one.
Best for: a finished campaign. Skip if: you already own it on another device and still have the files.

A 3D block survival world in 32 MB. That is the same size as Shattered Pixel Dungeon and a fraction of Minecraft, which is why it is on this page and Minecraft is not.

Buy Stardew Valley before Fruit Ninja if you will spend $4.99 and Play shows under 500 MB on your device. It is the better game. It is not in the numbered 15 because we did not measure it with the same all-devices method on 28 August 2026, and this page is built on that method.
LIMBO, Monument Valley 2, and Geometry Dash are fully offline on our uncapped offline list. We do not have August package sizes for them, so they are not in this table. Cover Fire, Vector, and Into the Dead 2 show up on competing 500MB dumps. We will not add them until we measure them.

How to prove a game is offline before you board
- Install on Wi-Fi. Open it once. Let extra downloads finish. Skip optional logins.
- Turn on airplane mode.
- Reopen the game. Play one full level or one fight.
- If it blocks you, delete it. Pick another row from the table.
Open-source games (Mindustry, Unciv, Shattered Pixel Dungeon) almost never fail this test. Live-service free games fail it often. That is why Subway Surfers is labelled “core,” not “full.”

Install Mindustry, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, and Unciv first: 134 MB together, no ads, fully offline. Add Terraria or Stardew Valley if you will spend $4.99 — check Stardew’s Play download on your phone first. Use Subway Surfers only when you have a clean 500 MB and you actually want that game — it is not small any more.
