The best tower defense game for Android in 2026 is Bloons TD 6: $6.99 once, no ads, single-player works offline, and it was patched on 20 August 2026 (v56.3). Mindustry is the best free pick — no ads, no in-app purchases. Kingdom Rush Frontiers ($1.99) is the best cheap offline campaign, and Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance ($6.99) is the best modern one, though its paid listing still carries a contains-ads flag. Every price, ads flag, and update date below was read off the live US Play Store on 21 August 2026.

Two things separate this list from the ones above it. We added Jelly Defense, a $2.99 pay-once TD with no ads and no IAP that almost no page-one list carries. And we moved Iron Marines out of the ranking, because it is a real-time strategy game that several big lists file under tower defense by mistake — the explanation is in the not tower defense section. Most lists for this search also still include Clash of Clans. It is not tower defense. You want a path, towers, and waves. We installed or re-opened every game here, checked the store listing for price, ads, IAP range, and last update, and sorted by what you actually get for your money or your patience.

Offline and no-ads at a glance

“Tower defense games Android offline” is half of this search. Here is the short answer. “Offline” means the campaign runs in airplane mode after the first install and any content download; online modes (co-op, PvP, events) still need a connection.

GameOffline campaignStore ads flagCost to be ad-free
Bloons TD 6Yes (single-player)No$6.99 once
MindustryYesNo$0
Kingdom Rush / Frontiers / Origins / Vengeance / 5Yes (Ironhide markets all as offline)Yes, even on paid apps$1.99–$6.99 plus tolerating the flag
Infinitode 2YesYes (optional rewarded)Free; IAP removes
Defense Zone 3 HDYesYesIAP
Dungeon Warfare 3YesNo$6.99 once
Arknights, Battle Cats, BTD Battles 2, PvZ 2, Grow Castle, The TowerNo or partial (server-tied)MixedNot fully possible

Why do paid Kingdom Rush games show “Contains ads”? Ironhide cross-promotes its own titles and uses optional rewarded videos. In our playtime there are no forced interstitials, but the flag is accurate in the store, so we show it.

Four kinds of “tower defense” (do not mix them)

  • Paid campaign TD: You buy the game. You place towers on a path. Bloons TD 6, the Kingdom Rush series, Dungeon Warfare 3.
  • Free + energy / ads: Plants vs. Zombies 2, Defense Zone 3, Grow Castle. Fine for weeks. The shop gets louder later.
  • Factory or PvP TD: Mindustry (build belts that feed guns), Bloons TD Battles 2 (real-time 1v1).
  • Gacha TD: Units are pulls. Arknights, The Battle Cats. A different hobby. See our gacha guide.

How we picked

Each game had to have a path or a clear defend-the-core loop, a live US Play Store listing, and an update we could date. We opened every listing on 21 August 2026 and recorded price, the ads and IAP flags, the IAP price range, rating count, and the last update. We have played every ranked title on a Pixel 8 and a 2022 mid-range Samsung; offline claims were tested in airplane mode. Clash of Clans and Lords Mobile failed the path test. Dungeon Warfare 3 passed the design test but has only 46 ratings, so it sits as a watch pick. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis is not out yet: it is in pre-registration on Google Play (the 15 April 2026 listing update is the store-page creation, not a release), with Ironhide confirming a global launch of September 24, 2026 on Android, iOS and Steam. It sits here as a heads-up, not a ranked or watch pick, until it actually ships.

  • Rank order weighs depth, ongoing support, and honest monetisation over brand size.
  • Ads flags come from the store, not our memory. A paid app that flags ads loses points.
  • Original Plants vs. Zombies is now a free EA app with ads. Nostalgia is not a free pass.

Bloons also appears on our no-ads games list because paying once still works.

The 17 best tower defense games for Android

1. Bloons TD 6 — best overall

Dev: Ninja Kiwi | Price: $6.99 | Ads: None | IAP: Optional | Updated: 20 August 2026 (v56.3) | Ratings: about 400K

Monkeys pop balloons. Every tower has three upgrade paths, so 20-plus towers become hundreds of builds. Heroes, four-player co-op, Odyssey, Boss events, and a browser of player-made challenges keep it alive years after launch. Single-player works offline once installed and updated, which is why it beats every free energy TD on a plane. It is also in Google Play Pass in supported regions.

  • No ads. Monkey Money and cosmetics are optional; you can finish everything without paying again.
  • Dozens of maps and a patch that is one day old as we write.
  • Goes on sale often. Wishlist it if $6.99 stings.

Best for: anyone who likes TD. Skip if: you refuse to pay once — then play Mindustry.

2. Mindustry — best free, no cash shop

Mindustry official Play Store screenshot

Dev: Anuken | Price: Free | Ads: None | IAP: None | Updated: 20 July 2026 | Installs: 5M+

You are not placing four tower types. You build a factory that feeds the guns: copper, conveyors, power, a core that must not die. It is open source, runs offline, and has co-op and PvP servers. Five million installs and zero store monetisation is rare.

Best for: engineers and Factorio fans. Skip if: you want a 20-minute cartoon campaign or a tutorial that holds your hand.

3. Kingdom Rush Frontiers — best cheap offline campaign

Dev: Ironhide Games | Price: $1.99 | Ads: Flag on | IAP: Yes (heroes) | Updated: 16 October 2025 | Ratings: about 196K

Desert, jungle, wasteland, and the sharpest level design in the series. Two dollars buys the whole campaign plus Heroic and Iron challenges. It plays fully offline. The last update was October 2025, so it is finished rather than live-service — which for a paid game is fine.

Best for: a first Kingdom Rush and the best value on this list. Skip if: you want the newest heroes and dual-hero tactics (buy Alliance).

4. Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance — best modern campaign

Dev: Ironhide Games | Price: $6.99 | Ads: Flag on | IAP: Yes | Updated: 14 March 2026 | Ratings: about 34K

Two heroes on the field at once, Linirea fighting beside the Dark Army, and the best tower roster Ironhide has shipped. The honest store fact: you pay $6.99 and Google still marks contains-ads. In play that means cross-promo and optional videos, not forced interstitials. Extra heroes are sold separately, which is the real reason Bloons beats it for value.

Best for: KR fans who want the current full campaign. Skip if: you want a clean paid app with no upsells — Bloons is cleaner.

5. Kingdom Rush Vengeance — play the villain

Dev: Ironhide Games | Price: $4.99 | Ads: Flag on | IAP: $1.99–$99.99 | Updated: 12 March 2026 | Installs: 1M+

You command Vez’nan’s dark army against the good guys. Vengeance lets you swap in towers from a pool rather than the fixed four, so builds feel more personal. Its ratings average is a touch lower than Frontiers because of the paid-hero and paid-tower DLC. Offline campaign, still patched in 2026. Kingdom Rush Vengeance on Google Play.

Best for: players who have finished the first two and want variety. Skip if: DLC nags annoy you.

6. Kingdom Rush Origins — the elf prequel for $2.99

Dev: Ironhide Games | Price: $2.99 | Ads: Flag on | IAP: Yes | Updated: 16 October 2025 | Ratings: about 166K

Elven archers, druids, and the saga’s prettiest maps. Mechanically it sits between Frontiers and Vengeance. Same offline campaign structure, same optional hero shop. Kingdom Rush Origins on Google Play.

Best for: collectors working through the whole series. Skip if: you only want one KR — make it Frontiers.

7. Kingdom Rush (original) — free start

Kingdom Rush official Play Store screenshot
Official Play Store screenshot © Ironhide Games. Get Kingdom Rush on Google Play.

Dev: Ironhide Games | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 16 October 2025 | Installs: 10M+

The one that made mobile TD feel fair. Free with ads and optional hero purchases, playable offline. Use it as a demo. If you love the jokes, buy Frontiers or Alliance.

Best for: trying the formula for $0. Skip if: you already know you like KR — spend the $1.99.

8. Bloons TD Battles 2 — best PvP tower defense

Dev: Ninja Kiwi | Price: Free | Ads: Yes | IAP: $0.99–$49.99 | Updated: 10 July 2026 | Installs: 10M+

Real-time 1v1: defend your lane while sending bloons at your opponent. Same towers and heroes as BTD6 with a loadout system and ranked arenas up to the Hall of Masters. It needs a connection and the rating hovers around 4.0 because of matchmaking and monetisation complaints, but nothing else on Android does competitive TD this well. Bloons TD Battles 2 on Google Play.

Best for: players who want a ladder. Skip if: you want offline or single-player — that is BTD6.

9. Plants vs. Zombies 2 — best casual free TD

Dev: Electronic Arts | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 13 July 2026 | Installs: 100M+

Time travel, silly plants, five lanes. It is still the TD a ten-year-old will finish. The shop is loud and newer worlds lean on premium plants. Treat gems as optional and it is a good month of play.

Best for: families. Skip if: you hate energy, specials, and pop-ups — play Bloons.

10. Infinitode 2 — best endless minimal TD

Dev: Prineside | Price: Free | Ads: Optional rewarded | IAP: Yes | Updated: 11 November 2025 | Ratings: about 110K

Clean shapes, a huge research tree, and maps that never really end. Works offline, and the ads are the rewarded kind you choose to watch. It looks like a prototype and plays like a numbers puzzle. Last store update is November 2025.

Best for: min-maxers and minimal-art fans. Skip if: you need a story or cartoon charm.

11. Defense Zone 3 HD — best military TD

Defense Zone 3 official Play Store screenshot

Dev: HC Global Distribution | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 17 August 2026 | Installs: 5M+

Turrets, air strikes, weather, a budget each wave. Still patched in August 2026. Heavier look than Kingdom Rush and fine on a mid-range phone once you lower effects. It plays offline; the ads are skippable between missions.

Best for: serious grey-green TD. Skip if: you want monkeys or jokes.

12. Grow Castle — the one-screen defense game everyone has installed

Dev: Raon Games | Price: Free | Ads: Yes | IAP: $0.99–$99.99 | Updated: 7 January 2026 | Installs: 10M+

One castle, up to nine heroes on its floors, endless waves from the right. It is half TD, half idle upgrade loop, which is why it has ten million installs. Ratings sit around 4.3; ad pressure rises the longer you play. Grow Castle on Google Play.

Best for: two-minute sessions. Skip if: you want maps and paths.

13. Arknights — best gacha tower defense

Dev: Yostar / Hypergryph | Price: Free | Ads: None | IAP: Gacha | Updated: 13 August 2026 | Installs: 5M+

Grid maps, deployment points, operators you pull. No banner ads; the shop is gacha. It is the smartest tactical TD on a phone if you accept pity systems and a server connection. Full ranking is in our gacha list.

Best for: puzzle brains who like story. Skip if: you want a $7 game you own outright.

14. The Battle Cats — best silly gacha TD

The Battle Cats official Play Store screenshot

Dev: PONOS | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 23 July 2026 | Installs: 10M+

Cats walk right, enemies walk left, one lane. The humour is the product and the gacha is real. A decade-old joke that is still updated monthly.

Best for: commutes and absurdity. Skip if: you want tower placement at all.

15. Plants vs. Zombies (original) — nostalgia, now free with ads

Dev: Electronic Arts | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 13 August 2026 | Installs: 500M+

This used to be the $3 lawn. It is now a free listing with half a billion installs and a rating well below its sequel. The 50 levels are still the 50 levels; the wrapper is not 2009. If you want a clean paid lawn-style TD, Bloons is the 2026 answer.

Best for: one nostalgic weekend. Skip if: ads between levels ruin it for you.

16. Jelly Defense — the pay-once one nobody on page one mentions

Dev: Infinite Dreams | Price: $2.99 | Ads: None | IAP: None | Updated: 12 November 2025 | Play rating: about 4.3

This is the one we kept coming back to while checking the competition. Jelly Defense is a genuine pay-once tower defense — $2.99, no ads and no in-app purchases at all, which puts it in the same rare category as Bloons TD 6 and the paid Kingdom Rush games. It is hand-painted, it has an original soundtrack, and its towers behave differently enough that you cannot brute-force the later maps with one strategy.

The catch is age. It launched in 2011 and the November 2025 update was housekeeping, not new content, so treat it as a finished game rather than a live one. For $2.99 with nothing else to buy, that is a fair trade.

Best for: anyone who wants a complete, offline, ad-free TD for the price of a coffee. Skip if: you want regular content drops. Get Jelly Defense on Google Play.

17. The Tower — idle waves, not a map builder

Official Play Store screenshot © Tech Tree Games. Get The Tower on Google Play.

Dev: Tech Tree Games | Price: Free | Ads: Yes + IAP | Updated: 25 July 2026 | Installs: 5M+

One tower, upgrade cards, endless waves. It is an idle game that borrowed the TD name, and a good one. We list it so you do not install it expecting Bloons maps.

Best for: background progress. Skip if: you want to place anything.

Watch pick: Dungeon Warfare 3, plus a launch to pre-register for

Dungeon Warfare 3 official Play Store screenshot
Official Play Store screenshot © Excidium Games. Get Dungeon Warfare 3 on Google Play.

Dungeon Warfare 3: $6.99, no ads, no IAP, updated 23 June 2026. You build the dungeon with traps first and turrets second, fully offline. Only about 1,000 installs and 46 ratings when we checked — too thin to rank, but the best-value clean paid TD after Bloons if you like trap design.

Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis: not released yet. Ironhide has confirmed a global launch of September 24, 2026 on Android, iOS and Steam — 15 towers, 12 heroes, 9 spells, 18 campaign stages, $6.99. Pre-registration is open now; we will move it into the ranked list the day it actually ships. Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis on Google Play.

Not tower defense (still in other lists)

  • Clash of Clans / Lords Mobile — village builders with raids. Lords Mobile has a small TD side mode; that does not make it TD.
  • Rush Royale / Random Dice — PvP merge battlers. Fun. Not a campaign path.
  • Clash Royale — card lane battler. Different sport.
  • Iron Marines / Iron Marines 2: Invasion RTS — this one needs explaining, because several page-one lists rank it as tower defense. It is by Ironhide, the Kingdom Rush studio, so the art and the tone feel like TD. It is not. Your units move: you drag squads around a map, capture points, and micro heroes in real time. Ironhide itself sells it as an RTS, and the sequel's store name literally ends in "RTS". It is very good — Iron Marines 2 is $2.99 with no ads (it does carry in-app purchases) and was updated 24 March 2026 — and if you want it, buy it. Just know you are buying a real-time strategy game, not a game about building towers on a path.

How to pick

  1. Will you pay once? Bloons TD 6. Need it cheaper? Kingdom Rush Frontiers for $1.99.
  2. Want $0 and no shop? Mindustry.
  3. Need it to work on a plane? Bloons, Mindustry, any Kingdom Rush, Infinitode 2, Defense Zone 3.
  4. Want a ladder and a friend to beat? Bloons TD Battles 2.
  5. Want plants with a child? PvZ 2, then turn on purchase authentication in Google Play.
  6. Want pulls? Arknights, then leave this page.

A Bluetooth pad helps on Bloons and Mindustry. See Android games with gamepad support. If you want cards instead of towers, open best card games.

Bottom line

Pay $6.99 for Bloons TD 6 if you want the real genre in 2026. Install Mindustry if you want free and honest. Spend $1.99 on Kingdom Rush Frontiers for the best offline campaign per dollar, and treat Kingdom Rush 5 as the pretty campaign with an ads asterisk. Do not download Clash of Clans because a list called it TD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best tower defense game for Android?

Bloons TD 6 is the best overall in August 2026: $6.99, no ads, version 56.3 released 20 August 2026, and offline single-player after install. Mindustry is the best free game with no ads and no IAP. Kingdom Rush Frontiers is the best cheap campaign at $1.99.

Which tower defense games work offline on Android?

Bloons TD 6 (single-player), Mindustry, every Kingdom Rush campaign, Infinitode 2, Defense Zone 3 HD, and Dungeon Warfare 3 all run in airplane mode after install. Arknights, Bloons TD Battles 2, and The Battle Cats need a connection.

What is the best free tower defense game with no ads?

Mindustry. It is free, lists no ads and no in-app purchases, and mixes factory building with turrets. Arknights also has no ads but uses character gacha instead. Infinitode 2 is free with only optional rewarded ads.

Is Iron Marines a tower defense game?

No. Iron Marines and its sequel Iron Marines 2: Invasion RTS are real-time strategy games, even though several tower defense lists rank them. They are made by Ironhide, the Kingdom Rush studio, so the art style is familiar, but your units move around the map, capture points and are microed in real time rather than being placed as fixed towers on a path. Ironhide markets them as RTS and the sequel's Play Store name ends in RTS. Iron Marines 2 is $2.99 with no ads but does include in-app purchases.

What is the best pay-once tower defense game on Android with no ads or in-app purchases?

There are only a handful. Bloons TD 6 at $6.99 is the biggest and best supported. Jelly Defense at $2.99 is the cheapest genuinely complete one, with no ads and no in-app purchases at all, though it is an older game that no longer gets new content. Kingdom Rush Frontiers at $1.99 and Kingdom Rush Origins at $2.99 are also pay-once offline campaigns. Mindustry is the free option with no ads and no cash shop.

Is Kingdom Rush 5: Alliance worth $6.99?

Yes if you want the best modern Kingdom Rush campaign with two heroes at once. Know that the paid listing still flags ads (cross-promo and optional videos) and extra heroes cost more. For pure value, Frontiers at $1.99 or Bloons TD 6 is the cleaner buy.

Is Clash of Clans a tower defense game?

No. Clash of Clans is a village builder with raids; you never place towers along a wave path. Lords Mobile and Rush Royale are also not campaign TD. If you searched for tower defense, you want Bloons, Kingdom Rush, or Mindustry.

Is Bloons TD 6 free on Android?

No. It costs $6.99 on Google Play, often discounted, and is included in Google Play Pass in supported regions. The free sibling is Bloons TD Battles 2, a PvP game with ads and in-app purchases.

Is Plants vs. Zombies still good on Android?

PvZ 2 is the living casual game, updated 13 July 2026, with ads and IAP and 100 million-plus installs. The original is now a free EA listing with ads and a much lower rating. For a clean paid alternative, buy Bloons TD 6.

Does Bloons TD 6 work offline?

Yes. Single-player works without Wi-Fi after you install and update. Co-op, Odyssey matchmaking, and the challenge browser need a connection. Update on Wi-Fi, then start a map before you travel.

Is Rush Royale a tower defense game?

Not really, and we leave it off our ranked list for the same reason we exclude Clash of Clans: it is a PvP merge-and-battle game, not a path-and-tower defend-the-core loop. You place towers, but the core gameplay is merging units against a live opponent's mirrored lane rather than planning a defense against waves. Some roundups list it as tower defense anyway because of the towers; we hold the stricter line.
