Read this first: how mobile games take your money
Quick answer: the price on the store page is not the real price. There are six kinds of games, and each one costs you in a different way.
- Pay once. You pay, you own it. No ads, no shop. Balatro, Stardew Valley and Terraria work this way.
- Free with ads. Ads play between rounds. Google Play marks these with “Contains ads.” Block Blast and Subway Surfers are examples.
- Free with a shop. You can play for free, but the shop sells packs, power, and looks. It is easy to spend more than you planned.
- Free to try, then one unlock. The first part is free. Then you pay once for the rest. Monument Valley 3, Silt, Chants of Sennaar and BALL x PIT do this.
- Gacha (random pulls). You spend money for a random chance at a new character. Wuthering Waves is one. In January 2025 the US government fined the maker of Genshin Impact $20 million over how it sold loot boxes to kids. Read the FTC notice.
- Subscription. Apple Arcade costs $6.99 a month. Apple says its games have “No ads. No in-app purchases.” Apple Arcade is iPhone only. Android has Google Play Pass; check its price in your Play Store.

How to check any mobile game in 60 seconds
Use this on games we did not list. It works on both stores.
- Look at the ads and shop labels. Google Play says “Contains ads” and “In-app purchases.” The App Store lists every in-app purchase.
- Find the most expensive item. If a “free” game sells a $99 pack, it wants big spenders.
- Read the score and the number of ratings. A 4.8 from 12 people is a guess. A 4.5 from 200,000 people is real.
- Check the last update. A game updated this year is alive.
- Check the size. Some big games are 3 GB or more. Make sure you have room.
- Check the developer name. Fake copies use the same icon. Match the name to the real maker.
- Play 10 minutes. Not hooked? Delete it. On Android you can ask for a refund in the first 48 hours.
