Sonic Fan Games for Android: Free APKs, Checked October 2026

The best Sonic fan game for Android is Sonic Robo Blast 2: free, 3D, over 25 levels, no Sega files needed. There is no official Android build. Two unofficial ports run the current 2.2.15 release, and the more recently updated one reached v2.2.15.6 in August 2026. For classic 2D, try Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit; for boost and homing attack, Sonic Escape. Sonic 3 A.I.R. remasters Sonic 3 & Knuckles but needs your own ROM.

Most Sonic fan games are built for Windows only. This guide lists only the mobile Sonic games whose developer, or a named community maintainer, publishes an Android APK, and shows what each needs from you. Every version, date and size was checked against the developer's own download page or store listing on 3 October 2026 and re-checked on 10 October 2026, except the two items flagged under the table.

Which Sonic fan game should you install?

• 3D Sonic with a full campaign: Sonic Robo Blast 2. Free, over 25 levels and six playable characters. The newest Android build is unofficial and has known graphics bugs.
• Classic 2D, nothing to supply: Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit, Sonic SMS Remake 1 to 3, Sonic J, or Sonic Time Twisted (but its 2022 APK may not install on recent Android).
• Boost, homing attack and a roguelike twist: Sonic Escape, a 2D Advance and Rush-inspired game whose Android APK is a large 238 MB download.
• The real Sonic 3 & Knuckles, remastered: Sonic 3 A.I.R. You supply the ROM.
• Sonic 1, 2, CD or Mania with mods: the RSDK ports. You supply the data file from a copy you own.
• Modern takes: Sonic Momentum (Sonic Frontiers-inspired) or the Sonic the Hedgehog 1996 demo (Saturn-style 3D, 317.7 MB).
• Easiest install: Tails Adventure Remake (on Google Play) or Open Surge (on F-Droid, a Sonic-style game that is not Sonic).

Did you mean official games? Sonic Dash Run and Sonic Rumble Party are live on US Google Play (checked 3 October 2026). Sega's mobile Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic CD releases have been delisted, and Sonic Mania Plus launched on Netflix Games for Android on 7 May 2024.

The SRB2 row was re-checked on 15 October 2026. The rest was re-checked on 10 October 2026 against GitHub releases, F-Droid, Game Jolt, itch.io, the SRB2 and A.I.R. sites, the SMS Remake blog and the showcase pages. Not re-checked: the Sonic Jump Revival entry and the 317.7 MB size of Sonic the Hedgehog 1996, which stay as of 3 October 2026.

Install-and-play APKs (no Sega files needed)

Sonic Robo Blast 2: the 3D one, and which Android build to pick

SRB2 is a free 3D fan game built on a modified Doom Legacy engine and inspired by the Genesis Sonic games. It lists over 25 levels, and version 2.2 has six playable characters (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Fang and Metal Sonic). The Android port adds touch and tilt controls with extensive customisation. It is not on Google Play, and the official download page lists only Windows, macOS and Linux.

The Android situation is more nuanced than "frozen at 2.2.13". Sonic Team Junior's official Android support ended with v2.2.9. Community builds from the SRB2-Mobile group on GitHub reached v2.2.13 Patch 1 (January 2024), and that repository is now archived. A separate fork by a community developer, bitten2up on GitHub, published v2.2.15 Patch 1 on 4 June 2026, matching the current PC release (v2.2.15, January 2025). It is unofficial, and its notes list known bugs: buggy OpenGL rendering (missing wall textures, models not working), offset touch input, and crashes when changing resolution or taking screenshots. Pick 2.2.15 Patch 1 for current content, or 2.2.13 Patch 1 for the last build from the original Android maintainers.

Update, 15 October 2026: there is now a second 2.2.15 port, and it is the more actively patched one. A developer publishing as thegreatbbd94-ux on GitHub started an unofficial SRB2 Android port in April 2026 and has shipped a run of bugfix releases since then. The latest is v2.2.15.6 (20 August 2026), a single 177.1 MB arm64 APK with a SHA256SUMS file you can check it against. Here is what its release notes say:

• Visible game folder: game data lives in /storage/emulated/0/SRB2 rather than the hidden Android/data folder, so you can drop addons in with any file manager. On Android 11 and newer it asks for All Files Access to do that. v2.2.15.6 fixed a first-launch bug that quietly put files in the hidden folder anyway.
• OpenGL: optional, through gl4es. Switching from Software to OpenGL inside the video settings crashed the game in the 2.2.15.1 notes, so pick OpenGL before launching.
• Known issues (from the v2.2.15.4 notes): some sounds are missing, including the homing thok and spin, and servers you host do not show up in the master server list.
• Install: uninstall any earlier SRB2 build first. These APKs are self-signed, so the signatures will not match.

The maintainer also writes in the v2.2.15.6 notes that they could not test that release on a real device. Treat it as a community build, not a polished product.

Which SRB2 APK should you pick?

• Want the most recent fixes and an easy addons folder? Start with the thegreatbbd94-ux v2.2.15.6 build.
• Hit sound or startup problems? Try the bitten2up 2.2.15 Patch 1 build.
• Want the last release from the original Android maintainers? Use 2.2.13 Patch 1, which runs older content.

A browser port exists but runs v2.2.4 with no online multiplayer, so it is no route to the newest version.

Sonic SMS Remake 1, 2 and 3: Master System-inspired remakes

A fan trilogy by Creative Araya that rebuilds the 8-bit Sonic games in a new universe, with extra characters, zones and modes. Sonic 3: Timelines is still in beta. The developer lists Bluetooth or USB gamepad support, 60 or 30 fps and two-device Wi-Fi or LAN multiplayer, and on 4 June 2026 added 64-bit Android builds labelled for Android 14 and newer. The blog's APK links lead to a third-party file host, so reach them from the developer's blog or itch.io page, not from a search result.

Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit: a Genesis-style Game Gear remake

Noah Copeland's free remake of the 1994 Game Gear game, rebuilt as if it had launched on the Sega Genesis. It reached Android on 26 May 2023 and is offered as separate 64-bit and 32-bit APKs. An August 2023 update added Amy Rose, super forms in free-play mode and an alternative lives system based on Sonic Origins.

Sonic Time Twisted: Sonic CD-style time travel

Its developer, Overbound, describes a 2D game modelled after Sonic CD and Sonic 3 & Knuckles: 8 original zones across 28 acts, three playable characters (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) and time travel between past and future zones. The Android APKs (v1.1.2, March 2022) are the newest on its itch.io page, and players report in the comments that recent Android versions refuse to install them with an "older version of Android" message. Read the comments before downloading 96 MB.

Newer builds from the SAGE showcase

Sonic Fan Games HQ's showcase lists the entries to SAGE (Sonic Amateur Games Expo), the community's annual fan-game event. These four have Android files on their developers' pages:

• Sonic Momentum Beta Edition: a remixed interpretation of Sonic Frontiers built around keeping your momentum, according to its developer.
• Sonic Jump Revival: a mod of the Android port of Sega's 2007 Sonic Jump with extra playable characters (its select screen lists Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Shadow), a higher frame rate and gamepad and keyboard support. Because it is built on a Sega game, it sits closer to Sega's own files than the engine-only projects below.
• Sonic the Hedgehog 1996: a Unity game that reimagines classic Sonic as a low-poly Sega Saturn or Nintendo 64 title. Its page documents controller layouts and mentions no touch controls.
• Tails Adventure Remake: an open-source remake of the Game Gear game with keyboard, gamepad and touchscreen input. It is the simplest install here because it is also on Google Play (updated 26 April 2026).

Sonic Escape: boost and homing attack on a phone

Sonic Escape by Saucek is a free 2D roguelike inspired by Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush: you climb floor by floor to a final boss on floor 20. Its itch.io page lists an Android APK alongside Windows and browser builds, and the patch notes say Sonic, Blaze and Metal Sonic can boost (Dash plus forward) and that Sonic and Metal Sonic have a homing attack. That makes it the closest thing we found to a boost-style Sonic on Android, though it is 2D and not a Generations clone. The patch notes also list boss fights with non-Sonic characters, so expect a stranger crossover than a straight Sonic game. The APK is 238 MB, so check your storage first.

Sonic J and Sonic 3 Chronicles: more 2D builds on Game Jolt

Sonic J by jtn00b is a non-profit classic-style fan game. Its latest build, the Online Physics Demo, adds time-attack leaderboards with replays, 17 trophies and user statistics through the Game Jolt API, and Game Jolt lists a 73.4 MB Android APK for it. The developer calls it a closure for the 2021 demo and says a Final Demo with a new zone and Tails is planned. Sonic 3 Chronicles by FuntikX is an alternate take on Sonic 3 that turns the Competition-mode zones into full levels. The November 2023 demo (v0.0.28, three zones, four characters) has an Android zip with adjustable touch buttons and gamepad support, but it has not been updated since, so treat it as a demo.

Open Surge: the one with no Sega connection

Open Surge is an open-source (GPL) engine inspired by 16-bit Sonic games, bundled with Surge the Rabbit, an original platformer with its own characters and levels, so it needs no Sega files and is not a Sonic game. F-Droid builds and signs its APK (Android 5.0 or newer; reading shared storage is the only permission listed). The level editor is meant for a PC, and Android TV users need a gamepad.

Ports that need your own game files

These projects ship an engine, not the game. The levels, art and music still belong to Sega, so you supply them from a copy you own.

Sonic 3 A.I.R.: the ROM problem

Sonic 3 A.I.R. (Angel Island Revisited) is a fan-made widescreen remaster of Sonic 3 & Knuckles with mod support. The current Android release is v26.03.28.0 (41.7 MB), and the official site links to the APK on GitHub.

Newer Windows-only test builds exist (the latest is dated 15 August 2026), but the Android APK has not changed since the March stable release.

What you need: a Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM named Sonic_Knuckles_wSonic3.bin. The official steps take it from the Steam release's "uncompressed ROMs" folder on a PC or Mac, copy it to the phone by USB or Google account, install the APK, then pick the ROM at first launch.

The catch: Sega delisted that Steam release in May 2022, and its Steam page now says it is no longer available, so only existing owners can use that route. The A.I.R. page points everyone else to a community guide of "legal alternatives", which comes down to making a ROM from copies of the games you own. We do not link to ROMs. Sonic Origins does not help, because its Sonic 3 & Knuckles runs on Sega's Retro Engine rather than as a Genesis ROM.

Android quirks the developer lists: menus work only through the virtual touch gamepad or an external controller, startup can show a black screen for 15 seconds or more on slower phones, low-end phones may not hold 60 fps, and mods install through the in-game file browser (Options, System tab).

Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic Mania: the RSDK ports

The RSDKModding project publishes open-source decompilations of the Retro Engine versions of these games, and its GitHub releases include ready-made Android builds. The Mania package bundles the Android APK with a touch-controls mod, and release builds ship with the Plus DLC content switched off. The projects say they will not run without data from an official copy and ask you not to use them to pirate the games.

Where the data file comes from: Sonic 1 and 2 data can come from Sonic Origins on PC (Steam or Epic Games Store) or from the 2013 mobile apps. Those mobile releases are delisted, so that route only works if you downloaded them earlier and can re-download them from your purchase history. Sonic CD data comes from the original Steam release, Sonic Origins or the delisted mobile app. For Sonic Mania, the project's guide covers copies bought on Steam or the Epic Games Store, and the Android build asks on first launch for the folder it should run in, which is where your Data.rsdk goes. The official Android route for Mania is Sonic Mania Plus on Netflix Games, which needs a Netflix subscription.

ROM hacks, emulators and browser games

Mega Drive ROM hacks have no APK. They are patches you apply to an original ROM and run in a Genesis emulator on your phone. Sonic Megamix, a total conversion of Sonic 1 by Team Megamix, is a well-known example. We did not verify current versions of individual hacks, so use each hack's own release page, and we do not link to ROM files. itch.io labels Sonic fan games that are playable in a browser, and those run in Chrome with nothing to install. The only SRB2 browser port we found is the old 2.2.4 build, so treat it as a taste test.

Is this APK safe to install? A 7-point check

Fan-game APKs are installed outside the Play Store, so the checks are on you:

1. Start at the developer's own page: a GitHub release, an itch.io or Game Jolt page, F-Droid, Google Play or the project's showcase entry. Searching "Sonic Robo Blast 2 APK" returns several mirror sites that re-host files you cannot audit.
2. Match the version and size to the table above. A "Sonic 3 A.I.R." APK that is 5 MB or 200 MB is not the 41.7 MB file the developer publishes.
3. Compare the checksum when one is published. Newer GitHub release files show a SHA-256 value. On a computer, shasum -a 256 file.apk (Mac, Linux) or certutil -hashfile file.apk SHA256 (Windows) prints yours.
4. Read the permissions. A game like these needs little: storage, Bluetooth for gamepads, vibration and network access for multiplayer are what the SRB2 Android manifest requests. Refuse SMS, contacts, accessibility, device admin or "draw over other apps".
5. Keep Play Protect on and turn on "Improve harmful app detection" (Play Store, profile icon, Play Protect, Settings) so unknown apps can be sent to Google for scanning.
6. Allow installs from one app only. Android asks you to permit installs from the browser or file manager you used. Allow it for that app, then switch it off again.
7. Walk away from anything labelled "MOD APK", "unlimited rings" or "premium unlocked", and from any "complete a survey to download" page. These games are free, so there is nothing to unlock.

If it will not install

Two platform rules explain most "app not compatible" errors. Android 14 and newer refuse to install apps that target Android 5.1 (API level 22) or lower, which can hit older fan-game APKs. And some phones, starting with the Pixel 7, support only 64-bit apps, so pick the 64-bit APK when a developer offers both, as Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit and the SMS Remake do. Do not hunt for "patched" re-uploads; wait for the developer's update.

Google is also changing sideloading. It scheduled the first developer-verification protections for 30 September 2026 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, with a global expansion in 2027 and an "advanced flow" for power users who install apps from unverified developers. Are Sonic fan games legal?

Sonic fan games use Sega's characters without a licence, so Sega can object to any of them. In May 2021 Sega's Sonic social media manager said that projects involving no profit are usually fine, while adding that she could not promise all content is OK. Free projects are the norm, and money is where trouble starts.

Projects also differ in how much of Sega's own material they touch. Engine-only projects such as Sonic 3 A.I.R. and the RSDK ports ship no Sega game data and make you supply it from a copy you own. Mods and ROM hacks start from a Sega game or ROM, so they carry or require Sega's files. Open Surge ships its own game and characters. We do not link to ROMs, and whether you can make or use a ROM copy depends on your country. This is general information, not legal advice.

Names you will see elsewhere that we left out

We could not confirm a current Android build on the developer's own page for these. Any Android file you find for them comes from someone other than the developer, so treat it as unverified. The first two were checked on 10 October 2026, the rest on 3 October 2026.

• Sonic Robo-Blast! From The Past: a remake of two 1998 fan games. Its Game Jolt page offers an Android APK only for v0.2.1 (September 2022, 64.8 MB); the 0.3.0 release from December 2023 lists no Android file.
• Green Hill Zone Simulator: the Sonic Fan Games HQ listing carries an android tag, but the developer's itch.io page offers only HTML5, Windows and Linux builds.
• Game Jolt uploads by third-party porters with names such as "Sonic Classic Collection" or "Sonic 3 Mobile": we did not verify them, and we link only to a game's own developer.
• Sonic After the Sequel: the developer's showcase pages for the '23+ demo and Omega list Windows files only. The fan directory sonic-fangames.com does offer what it calls unofficial Android ports (Classic, Legacy and Omega APKs). Those come from someone other than LakeFeperd, so run them through the safety check above before installing.
• Sonic 1 Forever and Sonic 2 Absolute: full-game edits of the 2013 remasters by Team Forever. Their GitHub repositories had no releases when we checked.
• Sonic CD Restored: only third-party Android repositories turned up.
• Sonic Utopia and Sonic Fan Remix: we found only third-party Android ports or unclear listings.
• Sonic.exe and Five Nights at Sonic's-style horror games: a separate genre we did not verify. The same safety checks apply.

How we picked and verified this

• We started from the pages that rank for "sonic fan games android" in US search on 3 October 2026 (game directories, forum showcase pages, official game sites, encyclopedia entries and video), then checked the most-mentioned games they present as Android-playable plus the newest Android-tagged showcase entries.
• We kept a game only if its developer, or a named community maintainer, publishes an Android file that we could confirm on the developer's own page, GitHub release feed, Game Jolt or itch.io listing, F-Droid or Google Play. Versions, dates and sizes are the ones those pages showed on 3 October 2026.
• Google Play status comes from loading each US listing. Sonic Dash Run, Sonic Rumble Party and Tails Adventure loaded; the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 mobile classics and SRB2 returned "not found", as did a made-up package name used as a control. Platform rules come from Google's Android documentation, and Sega's stance from its May 2021 statement as reported at the time.
• We did not install or play these builds, scan them for malware or measure performance. Android-compatibility problems are labelled as player reports.
• On 10 October 2026 we re-read the GitHub release feeds, F-Droid, Game Jolt and itch.io build lists and the Sonic Fan Games HQ android tag, and added the Android builds we had missed.
• Not verified: current versions of individual ROM hacks, and the games in the "names we left out" list.

Start with Sonic Robo Blast 2 for 3D, or Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit for classic 2D. Neither needs extra files. Sonic Escape is the pick if you want boost. Choose Sonic 3 A.I.R. only if you can supply the ROM, and the RSDK ports only if you own the games.
