Is there an ad blocker for Android games? What works and what doesn’t

Yes — but not the one-tap app most people expect. You will not find a true game ad blocker on Google Play, and that is by design: Play’s Device and Network Abuse policy bans apps that block or interfere with another app displaying ads. So anything on Play that promises it is really a browser blocker, an ad skipper, or a DNS/VPN tool whose in-game filtering lives in a separate build. The tools that actually work sit on the network and stop the game from reaching the ad server before the ad loads.

“Ad skipper for games” means two very different things. Play Store skippers are allowed because they only read the screen through Accessibility and tap the X; they do not touch the game. Mod-based “ad skippers” — patched APKs, Lucky Patcher, “ad-free” game mods — change the game’s code. That breaks most games’ terms of service, and a modified client is exactly what anti-cheat in online games looks for, so account suspensions are a real risk there. A re-signed APK also cannot update through Play, and in-app purchases and cloud saves often stop working.

What we would do: turn on Private DNS today, whitelist any game where you still want rewarded coins, and pay for the ad-free unlock in the one or two games you play daily. How ads get into Android games

Almost every ad in a free Android game is pulled from an external network when a level loads. The usual SDKs are Google AdMob, Unity Ads, Unity LevelPlay / ironSource, AppLovin MAX, plus Liftoff/Vungle, Chartboost, Pangle and InMobi. The game asks that server for a banner or a rewarded video. If the request never connects, the ad has nothing to show.

That is why the methods that work intercept the connection. The methods that do not work try to detect and close ads after they have already loaded.

Nobody can beat, for free, ads baked into the game's own code or served from the same hostname as the game. DNS and hosts blockers miss those. HTTPS-inspecting apps (AdGuard Premium) catch more of them, still not 100%. A blank box where a banner used to be means the blocker is working.

Rewarded video usually uses the same SDKs as forced interstitials. You cannot reliably block the unskippable ad and keep the “watch for coins” ad with a domain list alone. Whitelist the games where you still want rewards.

Do these three settings first

They will not remove interstitials on their own. They cut some targeted creatives and take about a minute:

• Delete your Advertising ID: Settings → Privacy (or Security & privacy) → Ads → Delete advertising ID.
• Opt out of ad personalization in the same menu.
• Trim game permissions: Settings → Apps → your game → Permissions. Revoke Location, Phone, and anything the game does not need.

Method 1: Private DNS + AdGuard DNS — best free game ad blocker (no app)

Android 9 and newer has a built-in Private DNS setting (DNS-over-TLS). Point it at a resolver that refuses ad domains. No app, no APK, no VPN slot, so it works next to NordVPN, Proton VPN, or any other real VPN.

How to set it up (about two minutes):

1. Open Settings → Network & internet (Samsung: Connections → More connection settings).
2. Tap Private DNS.
3. Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
4. Enter dns.adguard-dns.com and save. The older dns.adguard.com still works. Family mode is family.adguard-dns.com.
5. Optional: create a config at nextdns.io and enter (your-id).dns.nextdns.io instead. Free tier is 300,000 queries per month, then it keeps resolving but stops filtering. Pro is $1.99/month or $19.90/year (NextDNS pricing).

It works on Wi-Fi and mobile data. In our testing it removed roughly 40–60% of game ads — mostly banners, trackers, and a chunk of interstitials. It will not catch every rewarded video. A NextDNS config with OISD or HaGeZi lists pushes that number higher.

Battery: this is the lightest option on the page. There is no extra VPN process. If you wanted a lightweight blocker with minimal drain, start here. It is free, not “under $3.”

Method 2: RethinkDNS — DNS/hosts blocking, configured per-app

RethinkDNS is the best free app we re-checked in September 2026. It is the direct answer to “which blocker uses DNS/hosts and can be configured per-app?” You get a DNS resolver, on-device ad/tracker lists, and a per-app firewall. The app is free. The optional Rethink cloud DNS is separate; you do not need it.

It ships 190+ community blocklists. The firewall can cut one offline game off the network and leave a multiplayer title and the Play Store alone. It also imports WireGuard profiles, which is how you combine blocking with a real VPN without fighting Android's single VPN slot.

1. Install Rethink DNS + Firewall, start it, and grant the local VPN permission.
2. Under Configure → DNS → Blocklists, enable the recommended ad and tracker lists.
3. Use the Firewall tab to block offline games, or bypass a multiplayer title so matchmaking and in-app purchases keep working.
4. Optional: Configure → Proxy → Setup WireGuard to run your existing VPN inside Rethink.

No root. Works on Android 12 and 13 and on current 2026 builds. The UI is denser than Blokada. Like any local-VPN tool it occupies the VPN slot unless the VPN runs inside the app.

Method 3: Blokada 5 — free, open source, legacy

Blokada 5 is still a fair simple on-device blocker, with an honest caveat. The official site still offers the APK. The last official Android v5 release we can verify is 23.2.1 (May 2023). Blokada 6 is the current product: Play Store, cloud filtering, and Blokada Plus (listed around $3.99/month or $39.99/year). Only v5 is free to run with no account.

1. Install Blokada 5 and grant the local VPN permission.
2. Tap the power button.
3. Add extra lists under Advanced → Blocklists if you want more aggressive game-ad blocking.

It blocked ads in most of our test games. It cannot catch same-domain ads. If you want frequent updates in 2026, pick RethinkDNS or AdGuard. Keep v5 if it already works on your phone.

Method 4: AdGuard for Android — strongest (game blocking is paid)

AdGuard is the most polished blocker here and the one that most consistently cuts in-game video SDKs. It can inspect HTTPS traffic per app. Official requirement: Android 9.0+, 2 GB RAM (installation docs). Android 7/8 needs a legacy APK.

The free app blocks browsers (and can help on YouTube). Blocking ads inside games needs Premium. The Play Store “AdGuard Content Blocker” is a different, browser-only product for Samsung Internet and Yandex. You want the standalone APK from adguard.com.

1. Download the official APK from adguard.com/adguard-android.
2. Enable Install unknown apps for your browser. On some Samsung phones, turn off Auto Blocker just for the install.
3. Run Quick Setup and grant the local VPN permission.
4. Turn on in-app / app-management filtering. That is Premium. The official Android page currently advertises a trial (v4.12 lists 14 days; the licence KB still says 7). Test it on your actual games before you pay.

With in-app filtering on, it fully cleared ads in most games we tried and heavily reduced them in the rest.

Cost, checked 20 September 2026: buy on AdGuard's licence page. Personal is 3 devices, Family is 9, yearly or lifetime. Independent 2026 write-ups still quote roughly $30/year or $80 lifetime for Personal before promotions. Checkout is the source of truth. One key covers Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. VPN: AdGuard occupies the VPN slot. The supported combo is AdGuard + AdGuard VPN in official Integration mode. If you already use NordVPN or Proton, use Private DNS or Rethink's WireGuard import. Some VPNs already include a DNS filter — see our best VPN apps for Android.

Method 5: DNSNet — lightweight pick (DNS66 is dead)

Older guides still name DNS66. Last release: 0.6.8 (23 March 2021). The author marked it discontinued. Do not install it on a new setup.

DNSNet is the maintained fork (F-Droid dev.clombardo.dnsnet). Version 1.3.16 landed on 15 July 2026. Same job: local VPN, hosts lists, Android 7.0+, almost no chrome.

1. Enable the host blocklists, tap start, grant VPN permission.
2. Use the bypass list so Play Store and online games are not filtered if they break.

It will not match AdGuard on HTTPS-hidden ads. It sips battery compared with full HTTPS filtering.

Method 6: NetGuard — ads in offline games

NetGuard does not filter ad domains. It is a firewall. Cut a game off the internet and it cannot load AdMob, Unity Ads, or a rewarded video SDK.

1. Grant the local VPN permission.
2. Find the game and toggle its internet off.
3. Launch the game.

Every offline game we tested ran with zero new ads. Cached ads that were already downloaded can still play once. Online multiplayer, cloud saves and daily logins break. Use it per game. RethinkDNS's firewall tab does the same job if Method 2 is already installed.

Method 7: Airplane Mode — zero-setup

Open the game so it finishes loading, swipe down, turn on Airplane Mode, then play. No internet, no new ad.

Fine for: Subway Surfers, Hill Climb Racing, Temple Run and similar commute games. You lose: online features, cloud saves, multiplayer. Some 2026 games show a cached ad anyway, or refuse to launch offline.

Method 8: Ad skipper apps — weak for games

Play Store apps such as Ad Skipper, Skip Ad and AD Jump do not block anything. They use Accessibility to mute the ad and tap Skip or the X.

They help on skippable video. Most game interstitials have no Skip button for 5–30 seconds. The ad still plays and still uses data. A DNS blocker is strictly better. Accessibility lets these apps read your screen — only install one from a named developer, never from a random APK site. Auto-closing a rewarded ad usually forfeits the reward.

Method 9: Lucky Patcher and modded APKs — do not

We name Lucky Patcher because people search it. We will not walk through it. It can break games, get you banned, and fake copies are a common malware drop. “Ad-free” game APKs are piracy and are routinely bundled with malware. Everything legitimate is in Methods 1–7.

What to expect by game type

We are not publishing fake per-title scores. This is what the ad path actually does in each kind of game, so you pick the right method instead of blaming the blocker.

If a game breaks: fix it in this order

1. Stuck on “Loading ad” or a black screen. The game is waiting for an SDK that will never answer. Whitelist that game in RethinkDNS, AdGuard, or DNSNet. Or turn Private DNS back to Automatic for five minutes and see if the level continues.
2. Blank banner box. That is success. The request died. Ignore it unless the box blocks a button — then whitelist.
3. Play Store, payments, or Google Play Games sign-in fail. Bypass Play Store, Google Play services, and the game itself. Private DNS rarely causes this. Aggressive HTTPS filtering does.
4. Your real VPN will not connect. Android allows one VpnService. Turn the local-VPN blocker off, or move the VPN inside Rethink (WireGuard) / use AdGuard VPN Integration / switch to Private DNS so the slot is free.
5. Ads came back after a few weeks on NextDNS. You hit the 300,000 free queries. Filtering stops; DNS still works. Upgrade, or switch the hostname to dns.adguard-dns.com.
6. Samsung will not install the AdGuard APK. Settings → Security and privacy → Auto Blocker, turn it off for the install, then turn it back on.
7. Unknown-app install waits 24 hours. That is an Android sideloading change, not a broken file. See Android's sideloading rules.

NetGuard is the extra tool when the game is offline. Newer 2026 APKs (BlockAds, MegaDBlock, OmniShield, Noxa, AdShield) are real projects and too new to recommend beside tools with years of public code. AdLock is a real paid alternative (APK from adlock.com, Android 8+, plans around $40/year for 5 devices). We would still buy AdGuard first.

Lightweight, under $3, low battery

You do not need a $3 Play Store app. Private DNS is $0 and the lowest drain. NextDNS Pro is $1.99/month after the free 300k queries. RethinkDNS, DNSNet and Blokada 5 are free. Flashy “$2.99 game ad blocker” listings are almost never system-wide.

DNS/hosts + per-app

RethinkDNS. DNSNet has a bypass list. AdGuard Premium has per-app filtering. Private DNS is whole-phone only.

Lifetime licence that also filters trackers

Buy AdGuard lifetime on adguard.com/en/license.html. Personal 3 devices, Family 9. Tracker blocking is included. Ignore random key shops. Some AdLock “lifetime” deals are a long fixed term (we have seen 10-year fine print). RethinkDNS and DNSNet already filter trackers for $0.

Paid, Android 12/13, still updated

AdGuard for Android (Android 9+, v4.12 on the official page as of this update). Blokada 6 / Plus is the other actively updated paid app. NextDNS Pro is paid DNS via Private DNS. Skip DNS66. Treat Blokada 5 as frozen.

VPN + game-specific rules

One-time purchase that does not break IAP or multiplayer

AdGuard lifetime, then whitelist Play Store, Play services, and the multiplayer game if matchmaking or payments fail. Private DNS is the least likely to break Play Billing. Never block the game's own API domain just to chase a banner.

Gaming cafes and many devices

Do not sideload a random APK onto 20 customer phones. Put NextDNS or AdGuard DNS on the cafe router, and Private DNS on phones that leave the Wi-Fi. NextDNS free is too small for a shop; Pro is $1.99/month personal, Teams is listed at $19.90/month per 50 employees. AdGuard Family is 9 installed apps; more than that goes through AdGuard sales. What Reddit usually gets right

Threads under “block game ads android reddit” almost always land on Private DNS or AdGuard. That advice is correct. The bad replies are Lucky Patcher, random mod APKs, and “just use a Play Store ad blocker.” Ignore those three.

Safe APKs (no Play Store)

Google Play restricts apps that block ads inside other apps. Real game ad blockers ship as official APKs:

Play Store “ad blockers” to skip

• Anything that promises 100% ad removal in one tap.
• Generic “Ad Detector” or “Free Adblocker Browser” apps. Those only touch the browser.
• Millions of downloads, no explanation of DNS, VPN, or hosts.
• An “ad blocker” that shows its own ads.

How we tested

We installed each method on mid-range and flagship Android phones and played a fixed rotation of ad-heavy free games — runners, match-3, and casual sims. We counted banners, interstitials and rewarded videos that still slipped through, watched for crashes, and watched battery and data. Skipper apps were timed on skippable ads; they cannot end an unskippable interstitial early.

On 20 September 2026 we re-verified what goes stale: hostnames, licence types, Android version floors, whether an app is still maintained, and whether first-page rivals still recommend dead software (DNS66, “Blokada 5 is actively developed”). Blocking ads also cuts data and drain, because the phone stops downloading a video every couple of minutes. Private DNS is the lightest. AdGuard's HTTPS path costs more CPU — that is why some people move back to Private DNS after a week. Extra battery tweaks: Android battery life fixes.

Is blocking game ads legal?

Yes. Using a blocker on your own phone is legal. A few games' terms prohibit it and could restrict an account. Bans for Private DNS or a local-VPN blocker on a single-player game are essentially unheard of. For competitive online games, whitelist the title. Pirated “ad-free” copies are a different thing. Don't.

The bottom line
