How to Host a Roblox Private Server (VIP Links & Settings Guide)

You get everyone online at the same time, you all tap the same game — and Roblox scatters you across four different servers.

A private server fixes that in about a minute.

A Roblox private server is your own locked copy of a game. Only the people you invite can walk in. No randoms, no queue, nobody stealing your loot while you AFK. You get one link, you drop it in the group chat, and everyone lands in the same place.

Here is the part most guides have not caught up on: the rules for free private servers changed in 2026. If you are on Roblox Plus, something important happens on September 24, 2026, and it can quietly delete servers you are using. That is covered below, along with the exact steps, the real costs, and how to spot a fake “free VIP link” in five seconds.

What a Roblox private server actually is

Picture a big Roblox game as a cinema with 50 screens. Everyone gets pushed into whichever screen has a free seat. A private server is a screen with a locked door, and you hold the key.

Three things trip people up:

• You are not building or hosting anything. Nothing gets installed. Roblox runs it in the cloud for you.
• Not every game has them. Each developer decides whether private servers exist and what they cost. No Private Servers section on the game’s page means the developer switched it off.
• “VIP server” is the old name. Roblox renamed them private servers years ago. Same feature, and Roblox’s own help pages still say “Private / VIP Servers.”

How to make a Roblox private server, step by step

This works on the Roblox website and on the mobile app.

1. Open the game’s page — the page with the green Play button, not the game itself.
2. Scroll down to the Servers tab, below the description.
3. Find the Private Servers section under the public server list.
4. Tap Create Private Server.
5. Name it something your friends will recognise, like “Sam’s grind server.”
6. Check the price. It will say Free or show a monthly Robux amount.
7. Read the subscription agreement, then confirm.

Your server now sits at the top of that same Servers tab, with a Configure button next to it. That is where everything else lives.

Where the VIP link is hiding

Open Configure and look for the server link. Modern links look like this:

roblox.com/share?code=XXXXXXXX&type=Server

Roblox switched to this shorter format in October 2023 so links stop leaking the game ID and work better on Discord. Older links in the privateServerLinkCode format still work, so an old link a friend saved is not broken.

Anyone holding that code can join — friend or not. Treat it like a house key, not a username.

Playing on Xbox or PlayStation? Read this first

Console is the gap almost every guide skips.

• You cannot create a private server from the console app. Make it on the website or the mobile app first.
• To join, open the link on your phone or PC while signed into the same account, then launch the game on your console.
• On Xbox you can also open the Edge browser, sign in to Roblox, paste the link and hit Join.

Same account, same server. The console just cannot make one for you.

What every setting actually does

Most people create a server and never open Configure again. That is where the money leaks.

Shut down is your reset button. Someone being a pest, or an item glitched? Shut it down, rejoin, and the game restarts clean.

How much do private servers cost?

The developer sets the price, so it changes game to game. In practice:

• Free — common in simulators and grinding games, where developers want longer sessions.
• 10 Robux minimum if the developer charges at all. Most paid servers sit somewhere between 10 and a few hundred Robux a month.
• Not offered — some competitive games disable them so nobody farms wins in private.

Billing is a monthly subscription: you pay once up front, then the same amount on the same date each month until you cancel. Roblox spells the developer side out in its official private servers documentation.

One quirk worth knowing: if a developer changes the private server price, every active subscription for that game gets cancelled. If your server suddenly stops renewing, that is usually why — not a bug, and not a ban.

How to cancel before it charges you again

This is the single most common regret: buying a server for one weekend and paying for it for six months.

1. Go to the game’s Servers tab.
2. Find your private server in the list.
3. Click the three-dot menu on the far right of it.
4. Click Cancel, read the agreement, then confirm.

Your server keeps working for the rest of the month you already paid for. It just will not bill you again. Do this the day you buy it — you can always renew later.

Free private servers in 2026: what actually changed

“Free Roblox VIP links” is one of the most searched phrases in the game, and 2026 rewrote the answer.

Roblox launched Roblox Plus on April 30, 2026, a $4.99-a-month subscription that replaced new sign-ups for Roblox Premium. One of its headline perks was free private servers — and at launch, there was no cap.

That cap is arriving. From September 24, 2026, Roblox Plus includes one free private server per game instead of unlimited. Roblox says a small number of members were creating thousands of free servers in single games, which cut into creator earnings.

What that means for you, in plain terms:

• If you are a Plus member with several free servers in the same game, you keep one. The extras start expiring on September 24, 2026.
• Servers you bought at the creator’s price are untouched. They keep running and keep renewing normally.
• Servers in games where the developer made them free for everyone are untouched too.
• Different games still get their own free server each. The limit is per game, not per account.

What to do before that date: open each game where you hold multiple free servers and decide which one you actually use. Move your friends to that link now, rather than finding out later that the wrong one survived.

So how do you get a genuinely free private server?

There are only three legitimate routes:

1. The developer made them free. Open the Servers tab. If it says Free, create it and you are done.
2. A Roblox Plus subscription ($4.99/month), which covers one free private server per game from September 24, 2026.
3. Someone shares their link. Owners often post links in a game’s Roblox group or Discord for anyone to join.

There is no fourth way. Any site promising free VIP links for a game whose servers cost Robux is lying about something — and what it usually wants is your login.

The 5-second scam check before you click any link

• Does it start with roblox.com? A real link does. Not “robloxs,” not “rblx-vip,” not a shortener you cannot see through.
• Does it ask you to log in again? Roblox already knows who you are. A login box on an outside site is a password grab.
• Survey, offer, or download first? Close the tab. Roblox never gates a server behind those.
• Does it want your 2-Step code? Never share that with anyone, including someone claiming to be a moderator.

Will sharing a VIP link get you banned?

No. Sharing your own private server link is a normal, intended part of the platform.

What actually gets accounts banned or stolen is the stuff wrapped around it:

• Selling access for real money. Off-platform payments for Roblox goods break the rules. Robux only, through Roblox.
• Sharing your account instead of your link. Handing over a password is a rule break and the start of most “I got hacked” stories.
• Running exploits in your own server. A private server is still Roblox. Cheat software gets detected there like anywhere else.
• Posting your link publicly. Not a ban — but strangers will walk in. Generate a new link when you are done.

Why did my private server disappear?

A server deactivates for one of four reasons, and none of them are mysterious:

• You ran out of Robux when renewal day came.
• The developer disabled private servers for that game.
• The developer changed the price, which cancels every active subscription.
• You cancelled or shut it down yourself.

If you are a Plus member after September 24, 2026, add a fifth: it was an extra free server beyond your one-per-game allowance.

Three mistakes I see every single time

1. Pasting the link in a public comment. Within an hour, strangers are in your base. Share it privately, then generate a fresh link afterwards.

2. Forgetting to cancel renewal. Cancel on day one. The server still runs for the month you paid for.

3. Expecting separate progress. Your level, pets and items follow your account, not the server. A private server hides you from other players — it does not create a fresh save file.

Want your own game, not just a private room?

If you want your own map and your own rules, a private server is the wrong tool. You need Roblox Studio, the free program every game on the platform is built in.

• Download Roblox Studio on a PC or Mac. It does not run on phones.
• Start from a template — Baseplate is the classic blank canvas.
• Build, then hit Publish to Roblox.
• Keep the experience private in its settings so only invited friends can play.

Worth knowing if you go further: a game must be public before you can offer private servers in it, and you enable them from the Creator Dashboard under Audience → Access settings. Games that charge for access cannot sell private servers as well.
