The best MMORPG for Android in 2026 is Albion Online: free to download, classless, and playable on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and Xbox with one account. Pick Old School RuneScape for slow manual play, Diablo Immortal for action and Black Desert Mobile for graphics (US stores, checked October 3, 2026).

Two awkward facts shape this list. First, none of these ten is free of paid extras, so this guide shows what each one sells instead of stamping games “pay-to-win” or not. Second, some names that still appear in best-of lists are not available to US Android players today, including Ragnarok: The New World, Tarisland (shut down) and Aion 2 (PC only). Everything below comes from US store listings and developer pages read on October 3, 2026; the method, and what we could not confirm, is at the end.

Which Android MMORPG fits what you want?

These are the qualifiers people add when they search, answered with what we could verify. “Developer promise” means the claim is in the game's own listing or site and we cannot audit it.

• An all-rounder: Albion Online. Free to download, no classes, and one account across Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, Linux and Xbox.
• Free to download: all ten. What each one sells is in the cost table.
• No auto-play: Eterspire and Warspear Online promise it outright in their listings. Albion Online, Old School RuneScape and DOFUS Touch describe no auto-battle mode. Diablo Immortal has one, capped by Blizzard at one hour at a time and 24 hours a week, from level 60.
• No paid power: AdventureQuest 3D and Eterspire both promise it, and neither promise is audited. Albion Online is different: Premium adds progress bonuses, and Gold bought with real money can be traded for Silver.
• The same character on PC: Albion Online, Old School RuneScape, RuneScape, AdventureQuest 3D, Eterspire and Diablo Immortal each promise play across phone and PC. Toram Online and Villagers & Heroes are on Steam too.
• Mostly solo: Toram Online lets you fill a party with borrowed “mercenaries” or your own sub-characters. Diablo Immortal lists solo play, and Old School RuneScape lets you set your own pace.
• Open world: Albion Online, Old School RuneScape and Diablo Immortal all describe open or shared open worlds in their listings.
• Big 3D graphics: Black Desert Mobile and Diablo Immortal. Black Desert Mobile's Play listing states a minimum of 8GB of RAM, so check your phone first.
• Turn-based fights: DOFUS Touch is the only turn-based pick here.

Are MMO and MMORPG the same? What counts here

Not quite. MMO (massively multiplayer online) is the broad label for any online game with a large shared player base, from battle royales to strategy games. An MMORPG is the role-playing kind: a persistent character that keeps growing in a world shared with other players. Every MMORPG is an MMO, but not every MMO is an MMORPG.

To make the ten, a game had to meet four criteria: a persistent world you share with other players in real time; a character that keeps growing between sessions; social systems such as guilds, trading or group content; and a live listing on US Google Play with a developer update in 2026. Three kinds of game fail those criteria or sit on the edge:

• Online action RPGs sold as MMORPGs. Diablo Immortal is the borderline case. Blizzard markets it as an action MMORPG, and its listing describes a shared open world with clans, raids and PvP, so it is in, with a flag.
• Shooters and survival games with shared servers, such as Destiny: Rising and Once Human. Other players are around you, but their own listings call them a sci-fi RPG shooter and a survival game.
• Single-player gacha RPGs such as Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves. They offer small-party co-op, not a persistent shared world. Our gacha guide covers them.

The 10 best MMORPGs for Android in 2026

Ordered by how widely we would recommend each one to a US player, not by a score. Ratings, update dates and prices are in the tables after the list.

1. Albion Online: best overall

Albion Online is a sandbox MMORPG with no classes: your weapons and armor decide your role, and almost every item is crafted by other players, so the market is the game. Its own FAQ lists Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Linux and Xbox, and calls it entirely free to download and play. Xbox arrived on April 21, 2026 on the same servers, and linking your Albion and Xbox accounts brings your characters over. The Dragonfire update, with dragon attacks, the Ancient Lands and the Dragon Sanctuary, went live on August 31.

The catch: Albion has safer regions to learn in, but its red and black zones are full-loot PvP, so you can lose your gear. Spending is not purely cosmetic either. Premium adds progress bonuses (more Fame, plus daily Learning and Focus Points), and Gold bought with real money can be traded to other players for Silver. Whether that is pay-to-win is a judgment call, so we do not call Albion pay-to-win-free.

2. Old School RuneScape: best for slow, manual play

Old School RuneScape is the 2007 version of RuneScape, and players vote on what gets added. Jagex's listing promises mobile and desktop play on one account in the same worlds. There are 24 skills, including Sailing (added in November 2025). You can start free; Jagex's membership page lists 9 member-only skills, a world four times larger, 170-plus quests and 65-plus bosses among the benefits. The homepage counter showed 107,911 players online when we looked on October 3.

The catch: it is a grind with deliberately retro visuals, and membership costs money. The US App Store lists one month at $12.49 to $14.99. RuneScape (RS3), the modern sibling, has 29 skills and the same PC cross-play but a lower Google Play rating, 3.29.

3. Diablo Immortal: best for action and loot

Blizzard calls Diablo Immortal an action MMORPG. It plays as an online action RPG with a shared open world, clans, raids and PvP, and its Play listing promises cross-play between mobile and PC. The Warlock became the 10th class on June 17, 2026, version 5.1.2 reached Google Play on September 16, and Blizzard's news feed has Spawn crossover posts dated September 24 and 28.

The catch: purchases include random items, and Google Play lists single items up to $199.99. Auto-Battle arrived in April 2026 (level 60 and up, one hour at a time, 24 hours a week), which Blizzard says is deliberately less efficient than playing. 4. Black Desert Mobile: best for graphics and guild wars

Pearl Abyss's mobile MMORPG pairs real-time action combat with guild Node Wars and Siege Wars, a personal camp, and life skills such as fishing, trading and alchemy. Its Google Play listing states a minimum of 8GB of RAM. Patches land on Tuesdays (notes on September 22 and 29, another scheduled for October 6), and the official site also offers a PC launcher.

The catch: the listing flags random-item purchases, with items up to $99.99 on Play. It is a different game from Black Desert on PC and console, with its own servers and its own site.

5. Eterspire: best for no auto-play and PC cross-play

Eterspire is a small-studio, old-school MMORPG built around grinding, four-player Trials and endgame boss hunts. Its Google Play listing promises no auto-play, no paid power boosts, controller support and cross-platform play, and the Steam version launched on June 4, 2026. The official site confirms updates on the first and third Tuesday of each month, with version 82 on September 15, 2026.

The catch: those are developer promises we cannot audit, and the shop still sells Crystals and extras such as guild-member slots, with items up to $199.99 on Play. It is also among the smaller communities here, at 500K+ installs on Google Play.

6. AdventureQuest 3D: best casual and family pick

AdventureQuest 3D is a light-hearted MMORPG with five-player dungeons, 20-player raids, 5v5 PvP and sandbox housing. The developer's site calls it a free cross-platform game for iPhone, Android and PC, says there are no pay-to-win upgrades, and showed a seasonal update dated October 3, 2026.

The catch: Google Play labels the app as containing ads, and the shop sells Dragon Crystals and Guardian packs, with items up to $99.99. The no-pay-to-win claim is the developer's own.

7. Toram Online: best for build freedom and solo play

Toram Online has no classes: your weapon and skill-tree choices define your build, and its listing says you can run party content alone with borrowed “mercenaries” or a partner from your own sub-characters. The official site lists iOS, Android and Windows, with a Steam release on December 19, 2021, and was posting news daily as of October 3.

The catch: its listing recommends Android 12 or higher, a Snapdragon 765 or better and 6GB of RAM, so budget phones may struggle. The site calls basic play free with item charges included, and the shop sells Orbs plus leveling and bag-expansion tickets, so it is not cosmetic-only.

8. Blue Protocol: Star Resonance – best newer anime MMORPG, with caveats

Star Resonance is an anime-style MMORPG from Shanghai Bokura, published by A Plus Japan, with Android, iOS and Steam versions (Steam lists an October 9, 2025 release). Its store listings say Season 3, “Echoes of Ember,” added a new class, Twin Striker, and three maps on May 28, 2026.

The catch: its last Google Play update was May 20, 2026, the only pick without one in the past 90 days, so check that a new season is under way before you commit. Its official site was region-blocked when we tried it, and we could not confirm PC-to-mobile cross-save from the store pages. The update notes mention “Wish” systems for fashion, mounts and Wills, and the App Store lists Rose Orb packs, a Monthly Card and passes.

9. EVE Echoes: best space sandbox

EVE Echoes is NetEase's mobile take on EVE Online, a space sandbox MMO in its own listing's words. The official site posted patch notes on September 9, 2026, and the latest App Store release notes add Titan-class supercapital ships and 0.0 sovereignty warfare.

The catch: the shop sells AUR currency and Omega packs, with items up to $184.99 on Play. It is mobile only (its official site lists only the App Store and Google Play), and its App Store rating, 3.44, is the lowest of the ten.

10. DOFUS Touch: best turn-based pick

DOFUS Touch swaps real-time action for grid-based, turn-based fights, solo or with up to three allies, plus 1v1 and 3v3 PvP, 15 classes, 20-plus professions and a player-driven economy, according to its Google Play listing.

The catch: the shop sells Goultines, 30-day bonus packs and a class-change potion. Neither store listing mentions a PC version, and its official site would not load for us, so this entry rests on the store pages.

MMORPG comparison: ratings, platforms and combat

Ratings are the stores' own averages, not our scores. All ten returned a live US Google Play page on October 3, 2026.

What do they cost, and is any of it pay-to-win?

Pay-to-win is a judgment, not a store label, so this table lists what each game sells and who makes which promise. “Biggest single item” is the top of the per-item price range Google Play shows in the US. Nine of the ten list an item of $99.99 or more; only Toram Online tops out lower, at $79.99. Only AdventureQuest 3D carries Google's ads label.

They are not in our ten because we found nothing on their listings that beats the picks above for the needs in the chooser, not because they are dead. Not in the US, shut down or not on Android

These names keep appearing in “best MMORPG” lists, but as of October 3, 2026 none of them is an official US Android release.

• Ragnarok: The New World. Gravity's press releases list launches in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau (January 15, 2026) and Southeast Asia (July 16, 2026), with no US release announced. The App Store page Gravity linked for the Southeast Asia launch is missing from the US store, and the Google Play page it linked is the Southeast Asia version, so US availability is unconfirmed. A list that ranks it first is not written for US players. For Ragnarok in the US today, Ragnarok M: Eternal Love and Ragnarok X: Next Generation are live on both stores.
• Tarisland. Its operations team announced it would be delisted and stop operating at 00:00 UTC on November 4, 2025.
• Aion 2. NCSoft's Steam page calls it PC only and lists an October 5, 2026 release. There is no Aion 2 app on US Google Play.
• Final Fantasy XIV Mobile. Tencent announced on July 17, 2026 that the Chinese version, Crystal World, would close on September 30, 2026 and that plans for a global release were scrapped. The game's official portal now returns a 404 error.
• Throne and Liberty. We found no Android app on US Google Play.
• Metin2. Gameforge's own Metin2 page lists a Windows client only, so treat any Android file sold as Metin2 with suspicion.

How we picked and verified this

This guide compares official listings and pages; it is not a review based on playing the games. On October 3, 2026 we:

• requested each pick's US Google Play page (HTTP 200 for all ten, against a 404 control) and recorded its rating, installs, last update, ads label and per-item price range;
• read each pick's US App Store listing for its rating, release notes and in-app purchase names;
• read the developer's own site, FAQ or patch notes where they loaded (Albion Online, Old School RuneScape, Diablo Immortal, Black Desert Mobile, AdventureQuest 3D, Eterspire, Toram Online and EVE Echoes), and Steam's store listings for PC versions;
• applied the four criteria in the definition section above.

We did not play these games or measure install size, battery use or frame rate, and we have no scores of our own. When a claim is a developer's marketing, such as no auto-play or no pay-to-win, we say so. The Star Resonance and DOFUS Touch sites would not load for us, so those two entries rest on store listings. Ratings, prices and update dates change, so check the store page before you spend.

If you want one download, make it Albion Online: free, no classes, one account on six platforms. Choose Old School RuneScape for a slow game you can dip into, Diablo Immortal for loot and action, Black Desert Mobile for big-budget graphics and guild wars, and Eterspire if you want a stated promise of no auto-play and no paid power.
