Fool Night Release Date Is 26 November on Netflix, the First Shaft and Sunrise Team-Up

Netflix has set Fool Night for 26 November 2026, giving the long-awaited adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda's manga a firm worldwide date after months with only a vague 2026 window. It streams exclusively on Netflix, in every region the service operates in, and it is the first project the animation studios Shaft and Sunrise have ever made together.

When does Fool Night come out on Netflix?

The Fool Night release date is 26 November 2026. Netflix confirmed it alongside a new trailer and first-look images at Anime NYC, where the streamer laid out most of its late-2026 and 2027 anime slate.

Two things are still open. Netflix has not announced how many episodes the season runs to, and it has not published a per-episode schedule. Published reports say the full season arrives on the day, in the batch format Netflix uses for most of its original anime rather than the weekly simulcast pattern. Until Netflix puts an episode count on its own listing, treat the exact length as unconfirmed.

What is Fool Night about?

It is set on an Earth where sunlight no longer reaches the surface and breathable air has become the scarce resource. The state's answer is transfloration: people volunteer to be converted into plants, producing oxygen for everyone still human and earning their families a payout for the sacrifice.

Toshiro Kamiya goes through the procedure and something goes wrong in his favour. He keeps his mind, and he comes out of it able to hear the plants. That makes him useful to the people who want a last conversation with a relative who has already been converted, and the series follows him doing that work while the machinery behind transfloration comes into focus.

It is a bleak premise handled as a character drama rather than an action series, which is part of why the studio pairing raised eyebrows.

Why does the Shaft and Sunrise pairing matter?

These two studios have never collaborated before. Shaft is known for a highly stylised, graphic approach to composition and colour; Sunrise built its reputation on large-scale, grounded productions. Putting them on the same show is unusual enough that it has been the main talking point since the project was announced.

Atsushi Yukawa directs, in his first credit as series director after work on Space Dandy. Jin Tanaka handles series composition, Robert Sato is on character design, and Tatsuya Kato writes the score.

Who is in the Fool Night cast?

  • Kouki Uchiyama as Toshiro Kamiya
  • Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko Horai
  • Aya Endo as Saeko Kanaeno
  • Junya Enoki as Akira Yatsuka
  • Kiyomitsu Mizuchi as Jin Hiragishi

An English dub is coming, with Adam McArthur and Olivia Liang named so far. Their roles have not been announced, and the rest of the English cast has not been listed.

What else is on Netflix's anime slate?

Fool Night lands in the middle of a heavy run. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arrives on 20 October with 10 episodes, and Blue Eye Samurai returns in January 2027 with a third season already greenlit. On the live-action side, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story drops all eight episodes on 17 September.

If your app is currently showing nonsense runtimes on episode listings, that is a known bug rather than anything to do with these titles — Netflix has said a fix for the runtime glitch is on the way.

Should you add it to your list now?

Adding it to My List is the practical move, because Netflix uses that signal to notify you on release day and there is no pre-order or paid tier attached to it. Fool Night is included with every Netflix plan, the ad-supported tier included. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media if you would rather read ahead of the adaptation.
