Diablo Animated Series Confirmed for Netflix at BlizzCon, With No Release Date Given

Blizzard confirmed on Saturday that a Diablo animated series is in development at Netflix, announced by Blizzard president Johanna Faries during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony in Anaheim. No release date, cast, animation studio or episode count was given.

For anyone waiting to add it to a watchlist, that is the practical takeaway: the show exists as a confirmed project, not as anything you can schedule. Blizzard's own wording placed it at the start of a wider push, saying more announcements are coming across its other universes.

What did Blizzard actually confirm?

The announcement was short. Blizzard said it is partnering with outside creative teams to tell stories "beyond gaming across new screens", that an animated series set in the world of Diablo is in development with Netflix, and that more details will follow. That is the entire confirmed set of facts.

Everything else circulating today is inference. There is no announced showrunner, no writer, no voice cast, no logline beyond the games' existing setting, and no window. Treat any specific 2027 or 2028 date you see as unconfirmed until Blizzard or Netflix posts one.

Why Diablo works as animation

Diablo is set in Sanctuary, a world caught between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, with humanity stuck in the middle. It is a setting built around lore rather than a single protagonist, which gives an animated series room to tell a story without contradicting the games or requiring a player-character stand-in.

Animation also sidesteps the budget problem live action runs into with this material. Demons, cathedrals and hell-scapes are cheap to draw and expensive to build. Netflix has leaned on that logic repeatedly, most visibly with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which turned a game world into a self-contained series rather than a retelling of the game's plot.

Has Netflix tried this with Blizzard before?

Yes, and it did not ship. Netflix had Diablo and Overwatch series in development years ago, and both stalled during a period when Blizzard's parent company and Netflix were in a legal dispute over an executive hire. Nothing from that earlier effort was ever released.

That history is the reason to keep expectations measured. "In development" is a real commitment of money and staff, but it is several stages short of a greenlit production with a delivery date, and Blizzard adaptations specifically have a record of not clearing that gap.
