iPhone 17 Pro Cases Mostly Fit iPhone 18 Pro: Same 150mm Body, but a Slightly Thicker Camera Plateau
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on September 18 with exactly the same height, width and depth as the models they replace, so most iPhone 17 Pro cases slide straight on. The catch is the camera plateau: Apple says it is very slightly thicker this year, and it does not officially promise that last year's cases will fit.
For anyone upgrading today, that means an existing case is worth trying before buying a new one, but a handful of tight-fitting designs may not close cleanly around the cameras.

The body is identical, down to the tenth of a millimetre
We compared Apple's own tech specs pages for both generations. The chassis numbers match exactly:
- iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: 150.0mm tall, 71.9mm wide and 8.75mm deep on both.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: 163.4mm tall, 78.0mm wide and 8.75mm deep on both.
Weight is the one official figure that moved. The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211g against 206g for the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 249g against 233g. That 16g jump on the Max will not change how a case fits, but it is noticeable in the hand. Some coverage has quoted 204g for the iPhone 17 Pro; Apple's own spec sheet lists 206g.
What changed around the cameras
Apple's spec pages do not list a camera plateau measurement at all, which is why the difference is easy to miss. In published comments, Apple said the plateau on the iPhone 18 Pro models is "ever so slightly thicker." One widely shared figure puts it at 11.5mm against 11.4mm on the iPhone 17 Pro, a 0.1mm change. Other hands-on measurements describe the bump as roughly half a millimetre taller. Apple has not published a number, so treat both as estimates.
Either way, the extra height sits at the rear camera cutout. That is where a case can fail: a lip that was flush on the 17 Pro may sit fractionally lower than the lenses on the 18 Pro, or a stiff frame may not seat fully at the top edge.
Case makers do not agree
Accessory brands have split on the question. OtterBox and Decoded have said their iPhone 17 Pro cases work on the iPhone 18 Pro. Mous acknowledged the taller bump but said its iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max cases still fit. Rokform took the opposite line, saying its older cases are not compatible with iPhone 18 models because of the plateau change.
A reviewer who tested both generations reported that iPhone 17 Pro cases fit the iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro cases fit the iPhone 17 Pro, without problems. That matches the brand statements from OtterBox, Decoded and Mous, and suggests Rokform's warning reflects its own rigid, precision-cut designs rather than a general rule.
How to check your case
- Look at the camera lip. Put the phone face-up on a flat table. If the lenses touch the surface, the case no longer protects them.
- Press every corner. A frame that pops loose at the top edge is being pushed out by the plateau.
- Test the buttons. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps Camera Control, the Action button, the side button and volume keys, so check each press through the case.
- Be wary of rigid metal and skins. Hard bumpers and precut skins have the least give, so they are the likeliest to misfit.
- Soft silicone and TPU cases stretch enough to absorb a fraction of a millimetre, so they are the safest carryovers.
The same logic applies in reverse: an iPhone 18 Pro case should fit an iPhone 17 Pro, with at worst a hair of extra room around the cameras. Buyers of the foldable should note that iPhone Duo has its own case-fit setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 18 Pro?
In most cases, yes. Apple's spec sheets list identical height, width and depth for both phones: 150.0mm, 71.9mm and 8.75mm. The only change is a slightly thicker camera plateau, so very rigid or precision-cut cases may not seat perfectly around the cameras.
Does an iPhone 17 Pro Max case fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Generally yes. Both Pro Max models measure 163.4mm by 78.0mm by 8.75mm according to Apple. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is 16g heavier at 249g, but weight does not affect fit, and the same slightly thicker camera plateau is the only physical difference that matters for a case.
How much thicker is the iPhone 18 Pro camera bump?
Apple has only said the camera plateau is ever so slightly thicker and does not list it in its tech specs. One reported figure is 11.5mm versus 11.4mm on the iPhone 17 Pro, while other hands-on measurements put the difference at roughly half a millimetre.
Does Apple say iPhone 17 Pro cases are compatible with iPhone 18 Pro?
No. Apple does not officially list iPhone 17 Pro cases as compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro, citing the thicker camera plateau. Several case makers, including OtterBox, Decoded and Mous, say their older cases still fit, while Rokform says its iPhone 17 cases are not compatible.
Can I use an iPhone 18 Pro case on an iPhone 17 Pro?
Yes, that direction is the safer one. Because the iPhone 18 Pro's camera plateau is marginally taller, its cases leave the same or slightly more room around the iPhone 17 Pro's cameras, and the rest of the body is identical in size.
