iPhone Duo's 'Shift Left Edge' Setting Adds a Fake Bezel So Thicker Cases Fit

The iPhone Duo ships with a display setting that deliberately makes its outer screen smaller. It is called Shift Left Edge, it lives in the Duo's Display settings, and turning it on roughly doubles the width of the black border running down the left side of the 5.4-inch cover screen — the edge nearest the hinge.

Apple's own description for the toggle explains the point: it "moves content when you are using a case that partially covers the left edge of the outer display of your iPhone." In other words, it is an escape hatch for cases whose lip creeps over the fold edge and clips whatever is on screen. Reviewers with early units surfaced it this weekend, hours after iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders opened and buyers started shopping for Duo accessories.

Why a foldable needs a fake bezel at all

On a folding phone, the cover display sits flush against the hinge side of the chassis. There is almost no frame there to grip. A case that wraps that edge for structural rigidity — which is exactly what rugged and folio designs tend to do — has nowhere to put its material except over the glass.

The Duo's cover screen is a 5.4-inch OLED panel running 1398 by 2034 pixels at 460 ppi, and Apple says it delivers 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Losing a few millimetres of that to a case lip would cut into notifications, keyboard rows and the left end of the status bar. Shift Left Edge pushes the interface inward so the case covers black glass instead of pixels. The trade is straightforward: you give up usable display width to keep everything visible.

Apple's own cases are not the reason it exists

Apple sells two first-party cases for the Duo. The iPhone Duo Case is $79 in navy blue and sand, with a two-part design that wraps both halves. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is $129 in navy blue and taupe. Neither appears to require the setting — both are built around the phone's actual dimensions, and both support MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified charging.

Here is the detail that makes the toggle matter more than it first looks. Apple's cases do not go on sale until October 16 — the same morning Duo pre-orders open — and the phone itself does not reach customers until October 23 in more than 70 countries, with a second wave on October 30. Third-party accessory makers are already listing Duo cases now. For the first stretch of the Duo's life, the cases in circulation will largely be ones Apple did not design, built to specifications no one outside the supply chain has tested against a shipping phone.

What to check before you buy a case

• Look at how far the case wraps the hinge-side edge of the cover screen. That single edge is the one Shift Left Edge compensates for.
• Rugged and drop-rated designs are the likeliest to need it, because they gain their strength from a raised lip around the display.
• If a case only overlaps the top, bottom or right edges, the setting will not help — it shifts content on the left side only.
• The Duo measures 84.1mm by 117.8mm by 11.3mm folded and weighs 254 grams. Cases cut for any other foldable will not fit.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a support document for the setting, has not said whether it will expand to other edges, and has not indicated whether it is meant as a permanent accommodation or a stopgap for the first generation of Duo cases. There is also no published figure for how much display width the toggle actually consumes — the doubling of the border is an observation from hands-on time, not a specification.
