Sony's own upgrade page names three flagships and two mid-rangers:

That is the whole list. The Xperia 10 VI is not on it, and neither is any Xperia 5, nor the Xperia 1 V and the generations behind it. If you own one of those, Android 17 is not coming — the phone will keep whatever version it shipped with plus any remaining security patches.

On the Xperia 1 VIII the update arrives as software version 73.1.A.2.61 and weighs roughly 1.2GB over the air. The Xperia 1 VIII is a slightly odd case: it launched on Android 16 only months ago, so this is its first major version jump rather than a long-overdue catch-up.
What Android 17 actually adds on an Xperia
Sony has highlighted four changes, and they are more substantial than a typical Xperia point release.
Desktop mode. Plug a supported Xperia into an external display and Android 17 gives you a windowed desktop layout instead of a mirrored phone screen. Sony limits this to compatible models rather than the full eligible list.
Deeper customisation. The Quick Settings panel now uses resizable tiles that can carry a short description, and the arrangement is yours to set. Wallpaper and style options expand on the lock screen and home screen, including custom icon shapes.
Better screen recording. You can record the entire screen or a single app, and capture device audio and the microphone at the same time — useful if you have been juggling a third-party recorder for that.
Custom looks, Xperia 1 VIII only. The camera picks up a preset system that changes how images are processed for colour and tone. You can save three of them, name them, and switch between them while shooting. This one does not extend to the other four phones.
How to check whether yours is ready
The update is server-side and staged, so it will not land on every eligible handset at once. Open Settings > System > Software update and tap the check button. If nothing appears, there is no manual trick worth trying — the queue simply has not reached your device or your region yet.
Before you install a 1.2GB upgrade, make sure the phone is above roughly 50% battery and on Wi-Fi. Major version jumps also tend to rebuild app caches on first boot, so expect a few hours of warmer-than-usual behaviour and slightly faster battery drain before things settle.
Sony's short support list is not unusual for the brand, but it is a real gap next to what Google and Samsung now promise on their own flagships.
