Android 17 Motion Assist Fights Carsickness, but Rollout Skips Some Pixels

Google has begun rolling out Motion Assist, a new Android 17 feature that puts moving dots on your screen edges to counter the nausea that comes from looking at a phone in a moving car. The rollout is server-side and uneven: some Pixel 11 phones already have the toggle in Settings, while others running the exact same Android 17 build do not.

What Motion Assist actually does

Carsickness happens when your eyes tell your brain you are sitting still while your inner ear feels the car turning, braking, or accelerating. Motion Assist tries to close that gap. It places small dots around the edges of your screen and moves them in time with the vehicle, using the phone's accelerometer and gyroscope to track how you are being thrown around.

The dots can activate automatically once the phone senses you are in a moving vehicle, or you can trigger them manually. Google has also built in customization: you can change the shape, color, and opacity of the dots, and there is an option to randomize their pattern rather than run a fixed animation.

The feature has a history under a different name

This is not a brand-new idea. Testers first spotted an early version called Motion Cues buried in Android code back in December 2024. Nearly two years later, Google has renamed it Motion Assist and started pushing it live, well after Apple shipped a near-identical Vehicle Motion Cues feature in iOS 18 back in September 2024.

Why your Pixel might not have it yet

Because the rollout is a remote flag rather than a system update, having Android 17 installed is not enough on its own. Early reports show a Pixel 11 Pro XL with the Motion Assist toggle live in Settings, while a Pixel 11 Pro and a Pixel 11 Pro Fold on the identical Android 17 build did not have it. A Pixel 10 Pro XL running Android 17 also came up empty. In other words, checking for a software update will not force this one to appear — it arrives whenever Google's servers decide your device is next in line.

How to check if you have it

If you want to see whether your phone has been flipped on, the setting lives a few taps deep rather than in the main Settings list:

• Open Settings and tap your profile icon
• Select All services
• Scroll to the Personal & device safety section
• Look for Motion Assist

If it is enabled on your phone, you can also add a Motion Assist tile to Quick Settings for faster access instead of digging through the menu every time you get in a car.

What this means if you already deal with carsickness

The feature is aimed squarely at passengers who need to read messages, scroll, or work from a phone while riding rather than driving. It will not help everyone, and Google has not said whether it plans to extend it beyond Pixel hardware to other Android phones or when the staged rollout will reach full coverage. For now, patience is the only real fix if the toggle has not shown up yet, the same as with most of Google's account-side rollouts we have tracked on Android 17 devices, including the August security and bug-fix update that reached Pixel phones earlier this month.
