Wardogs Server Queue: Bulkhead Ships a Launch Hotfix After a 337K Steam Peak

BULKHEAD released Launch Stability Hotfix #1 for Wardogs at about 20:20 UTC on 10 September, roughly ten hours after the 100-player shooter opened in Steam Early Access and promptly buried its own servers. The patch is client-side and mandatory on PC: every player already in a match is logged out, told to download a new build, and dropped back into the Wardogs server queue on relaunch. From there BULKHEAD is readmitting people in controlled batches rather than all at once.

What the Wardogs server queue hotfix changes

The hotfix targets three specific failures players hit through the afternoon, according to BULKHEAD's own launch notes:

  • Players unable to join servers at all after clearing the login queue
  • Players being kicked out of servers unexpectedly mid-match
  • Login queue times stretching far beyond what the studio expected

The rollout is deliberately slow. Once the client update is installed, everyone re-enters the queue together, and the studio lets players through in waves, widening the gate as it confirms that servers are filling and holding. That is why the queue can appear to move in bursts and then stall — it is being throttled on purpose, not stuck. BULKHEAD said it would keep working on the problem overnight.

Is Wardogs down, or is it just the queue?

These are different failures and they look almost identical from a loading screen. If you are sitting in a numbered queue that moves slowly, the game is up and you are being metered. If you get through, load in, and are then thrown back to the menu, that is the kick bug the hotfix addresses — restart the client and check that Steam has actually pulled the new build before assuming the servers are offline. Steam will not always prompt for the update if the game was left running through the patch.

How big the launch actually was

Wardogs peaked at 337,157 concurrent players on Steam on release day, putting it behind only Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2 on the platform. BULKHEAD and Team17 also said the game passed one million copies sold on the day it entered Early Access. "To cross a million copies sold as we launch into early access is mental," studio CEO Joe Brammer said, adding that the most useful thing players can do now is keep playing and keep sending feedback.

The scale was not entirely a surprise. The August closed beta drew close to 500,000 players, the final pre-launch test peaked at 245,118 concurrent players on Steam, and the game had crossed a million wishlists before launch. Capacity planning still came up short — a familiar story for anyone who followed the Battlefield 6 update 1.4.2.5 stability fixes earlier this year.

Price, platforms and what Early Access includes

Wardogs costs $39.99 and runs on Windows only. There is no Mac or Linux build, and no Steam Deck verification at launch. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were confirmed in the launch trailer for 2028, which is a long way out — this is a PC-first release for the foreseeable future, and the studio has said the price will rise when the game leaves Early Access.

Team17 publishes; BULKHEAD develops. The Season 1 changelog that shipped alongside pre-loading on 9 September reworked server browser filtering, fixed voice chat cutting out permanently after a failed join, put a maximum operator rotation speed on vehicle turrets, ran a balance pass on the Z20 Lakota helicopter, and closed an exploit that let players reach an unintended spot on a church roof. Progression was also rebalanced so higher-tier unlocks take longer to earn.

Community servers are the workaround

Official servers are the bottleneck, not the game. Wardogs supports community-hosted servers, and BULKHEAD approved three hosting partners ahead of launch — QONZER, BisectHosting and xREALM. A rented community server has its own player slots and its own admins, so it sidesteps the official login queue entirely. It also means server admins can ban cheaters directly instead of waiting on the report system.

If you would rather wait out the queue, the PC storefront around it has had its own week: Valve has started requiring a credit card for age verification in Australia, and Ubisoft is removing the Ubisoft Connect launcher from its Steam releases. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wardogs down right now?

Wardogs was not fully offline on 10 September, but BULKHEAD took the servers down to apply Launch Stability Hotfix #1 at about 20:20 UTC and is letting players back in gradually. If you are in a numbered login queue the servers are running and you are being metered; if you load in and get kicked back to the menu, restart the client so Steam installs the new build.

Why is the Wardogs queue so long?

BULKHEAD is admitting players in controlled waves on purpose after the game peaked at 337,157 concurrent players on Steam on launch day. The studio widens the gate as it confirms servers are populating without failures, so the queue moves in bursts rather than steadily. It is throttling, not a stuck queue.

How much does Wardogs cost and what platforms is it on?

Wardogs is $39.99 on Steam and runs on Windows only — there is no Mac or Linux build. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions have been announced for 2028. BULKHEAD has said the price will go up when the game leaves Early Access.

Can I skip the Wardogs login queue?

Community-hosted servers are separate from the official server pool and have their own slots, so they are not behind the official login queue. BULKHEAD approved three hosting partners before launch — QONZER, BisectHosting and xREALM — and community server admins can also ban cheaters directly.

Do I have to download the Wardogs hotfix?

Yes. Launch Stability Hotfix #1 is a client update, so you cannot connect on the old build. Close Wardogs completely and let Steam pull the patch; if the game was left running while the update shipped, Steam may not prompt you until you restart it.
