Mortal Shell 2 Early Access Starts at 9 a.m. ET on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam

Mortal Shell 2 early access unlocks at 1:00 p.m. UTC on 17 August, which is 9:00 a.m. ET, 6:00 a.m. PT and 2:00 p.m. BST. It is a single global unlock, and it applies on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC through Steam at the same moment. Only one edition gets in: the $59.99 Devout Edition, which carries up to 72 hours of advance access ahead of the full 20 August launch.

What time does Mortal Shell 2 early access start?

1:00 p.m. UTC on Monday 17 August. There is no staggered regional rollout and no midnight-local unlock, so the game becomes playable at the same instant everywhere:

  • 6:00 a.m. — Los Angeles (PT)
  • 8:00 a.m. — Chicago (CT)
  • 9:00 a.m. — New York (ET)
  • 2:00 p.m. — London (BST)
  • 3:00 p.m. — Berlin (CEST)
  • 6:30 p.m. — New Delhi (IST)
  • 10:00 p.m. — Tokyo (JST)

The 20 August full release uses the same 1:00 p.m. UTC unlock, so anyone buying the standard edition waits exactly three days from this morning.

Which edition actually gets you in early

Only the Devout Edition. The standard edition of Mortal Shell 2 costs $49.99 and does nothing before 20 August. The Devout Edition costs $59.99 on all three platforms and bundles the advance access with an Obsidian skin set covering all eight playable Shells.

There is a third option that does not help you today. The Revered Edition is a $69.99 physical collector's package sold on PS5 only, with an art book, a steelcase and prints. It ships around the 20 August retail date, so buying the box does not buy you the head start.

Developer Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack describe the advance window as "up to 72 hours", and the wording matters: the countdown runs to the fixed 20 August unlock rather than giving each buyer a personal three-day timer. Buy the Devout Edition on Wednesday morning and you get whatever is left of it.

Is Mortal Shell 2 on Game Pass or PS Plus?

No. It is not in Xbox Game Pass at any tier on day one, and it is not in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog either. Both editions are straight purchases. If you are working through a subscription backlog instead, our round-up of the Game Pass titles that just left the service covers what disappeared from the catalogue over the weekend.

What you need to install it on PC

Steam lists 70GB of storage for Mortal Shell 2, and specifies an SSD rather than a mechanical drive as a requirement rather than a suggestion. The stated minimum is Windows 10 or 11, an Intel Core i7-10700K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM, and an RTX 2060 SUPER 8GB or Radeon RX 6600 8GB on DirectX 12.

That is a heavier floor than the first game asked for, and the 8GB VRAM minimum is the part likely to catch older builds. Console file sizes have not been published by either storefront.

The game is single-player, with English audio plus 14 other supported languages and subtitle support across all 15. There is also a free open beta client on Steam if you want to test performance before committing.

What Mortal Shell 2 actually is

It is a standalone sequel to the 2020 soulslike, again built around possessing Shells — dead warriors whose bodies you inhabit, each with its own stats and abilities. The pitch this time leans harder on speed than the original's deliberate pacing, and the eight Shells are a significant jump from the four in the first game.

Cold Symmetry is still a small studio, and Mortal Shell 2 arrives in a crowded stretch of the calendar — its 20 August release date is shared with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope, which is one plausible reason for putting three days of clear air in front of it.

If it will not launch after the unlock

The 1:00 p.m. UTC moment only flips the licence check; the files themselves come down through the normal pre-load. If the game is installed and still refuses to start after that time, a full console or client restart clears a stale entitlement more reliably than anything else, and re-checking that the Devout Edition rather than the standard one is the version installed is worth 30 seconds.
