NHL 27 Early Access Starts Today on PS5 and Xbox, With a 10-Hour EA Play Trial

Aditya Singh

NHL 27 early access opens today, seven days ahead of the game's 11 September launch, and there are only two ways in: buy the $99.99 Deluxe Edition, or start the 10-hour trial that comes with an EA Play membership. Both routes run on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S, and nowhere else — EA has not made a PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch version of this year's game.

How NHL 27 early access works, and what it costs

EA has split the head start into a paid tier and a subscription tier, and they are not the same thing. The Deluxe Edition is a full copy of the game that simply unlocks a week early. The EA Play trial is a metered sample of that same full build.

  • NHL 27 Deluxe Edition — $99.99, digital only. Seven days of early access from 4 September, plus 4,600 NHL Points, a HUT Icon Choice Pack (one of six 86 OVR Icons, including Scott Stevens and Duncan Keith), a HUT Heroes Choice Pack, a HUT Fan Choice Pack that hands you an arena and coach from one of the 32 teams, the Macklin Celebrini World of Chel loadout and two Double XP tokens.
  • EA Play — $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year. Ten hours of the full game starting today, plus 3,000 Chel Coins, Season Pass XP multiplier tokens and 10% off EA digital purchases, including the game itself. EA Play is bundled into Game Pass Ultimate, so Ultimate subscribers do not pay twice.
  • EA Play Pro — $16.99 a month or $119.99 a year. The higher tier is the one that replaces buying the game outright rather than metering it.
  • NHL 27 Standard Edition — $69.99. No early access. It unlocks with everyone else on 11 September, and carries a HUT NHL Player Pack, 500 NHL Points and a World of Chel double-XP boost.

One caveat worth reading twice: an EA Play membership applies to one platform only. Buying it on PlayStation does not open the trial on Xbox.

What time does the early access unlock

EA's own store and FAQ pages name 4 September as the date but do not publish an hour. Published reports point to 9 a.m. PT — midday ET, 5 p.m. BST — which matches how EA has staggered its recent sports launches. Treat that as the working figure rather than a commitment until the servers actually flip. There is no announced pre-load window and EA has not published a download size for either console.

Progress made during the trial or the Deluxe head start carries into the full game, so the ten hours are not throwaway. Spend them on the modes that take longest to set up rather than exhibition matches.

What is actually new this year

The headline addition is Connected Franchise, a rebuilt career mode, alongside a presentation overhaul that gives all 32 NHL arenas their own atmosphere, crowd behaviour and broadcast package. That last part is the change people will notice in the first ten minutes, because it touches every mode rather than sitting behind a menu.

Crossplay is in for Hockey Ultimate Team and World of Chel, so PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players share lobbies. The Xbox listing confirms HDR10, local co-op for two to four players, online co-op for two to six, and online multiplayer for up to 12.

Should you wait a week

The $30 gap between Standard and Deluxe buys seven days and a pile of Ultimate Team currency. If you do not play HUT, most of that value evaporates and the head start is the whole pitch. The 10-hour EA Play trial at $5.99 is the cheaper way to find out whether Connected Franchise justifies a full-price purchase, and the 10% member discount takes a slice off the game afterwards.

EA's sports calendar has been busy: Madden NFL 27 opened at 2 p.m. ET in August with a wider platform list that included Switch 2 and PC. NHL stays console-only. If you are still on last year's game, note that the NHL 22 and NHL 23 online servers went dark on 31 August, which removes the online modes from those titles for good.

Game Pass holders have a second thing to check this month. The September Game Pass wave adds Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on the 8th and drops Cyberpunk 2077 on the 15th, and Microsoft has separately confirmed monthly hour caps on Xbox Cloud Gaming from November — relevant if streaming rather than installing is how you planned to try NHL 27. On the phone side, our list of Android games with proper gamepad support covers what to do with the controller when the console is busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does NHL 27 early access start?

EA has confirmed 4 September 2026 as the early access date but has not published an official hour on its store or FAQ pages. Published reports put the unlock at 9 a.m. PT, which is midday ET and 5 p.m. BST. If the game has not appeared by then, it is worth restarting the console to force a licence refresh.

Is NHL 27 on Game Pass?

Not as a full catalogue title. Game Pass Ultimate includes an EA Play membership, and EA Play carries a 10-hour trial of the full NHL 27 build starting 4 September. After those ten hours you have to buy the game to keep playing, though your progress carries over.

Which platforms is NHL 27 on?

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and Series S only. EA has not produced a PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch version of NHL 27. Crossplay works between PS5 and Xbox in Hockey Ultimate Team and World of Chel.

How much does the NHL 27 Deluxe Edition cost?

The Deluxe Edition is $99.99 and is digital only. It is the only purchase that includes the seven days of early access, along with 4,600 NHL Points and a set of Hockey Ultimate Team choice packs. The Standard Edition is $69.99 and unlocks on 11 September.

Does progress from the NHL 27 trial carry over?

Yes. The EA Play trial runs the full retail build, so anything you unlock in those ten hours stays on your account when you buy the game. The same applies to the seven days of Deluxe Edition early access.
