Dave Bautista Is Kratos in Prime Video's God of War Series, Replacing Ryan Hurst

Dave Bautista will play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series, taking over from Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep performing a stunt on set and needed surgery. The casting was confirmed on 20 August, and it settles a question that had left an expensive production sitting idle for months.

Nothing else about the show changes. Callum Vinson still plays Atreus, Kratos's young son, the rest of the main cast stays put, and filming is expected to restart in Vancouver this autumn rather than slipping into next year.

Why was Kratos recast?

Hurst was announced as Kratos in January 2026 and had already begun shooting. He injured his bicep during a stunt and required surgery. Waiting out his recovery would have pushed the restart of production into 2027, so Amazon and Sony, which co-produce, went looking for a replacement instead. Bautista was reported to be in talks earlier this month before the deal closed.

Bautista is not an obvious stretch for the part. He spent years as a professional wrestler before Drax in the Marvel films, and Kratos is a role that asks for physical bulk and a quiet, wounded register at the same time.

What Prime Video has actually confirmed

• A two-season order from Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, with both seasons shooting back to back.
• Ronald D. Moore, of Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, is showrunner, writer and executive producer.
• Frederick E.O. Toye, who directed on Shogun and Fallout, directs the first two episodes.
• Co-production credits sit with Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
• The story follows the Norse-era games: Kratos and Atreus carrying his wife's ashes across a hostile world.

What has not been confirmed is a premiere date. Amazon has never given one, and the recast does not come with a new schedule attached. Reports of a mid-October production restart come from the trades rather than from Amazon, so treat the timing as unconfirmed until the company says so itself.

When can you actually watch it?

Not this year. With cameras only restarting in the autumn and two seasons filming consecutively, the earliest realistic window is 2027 — but that is an inference from the production schedule, not an announcement. Anyone quoting a specific date right now is guessing.

When it does land, it will stream on Prime Video, which comes bundled with an Amazon Prime membership and is also sold on its own. That is the same service that recently became the first to ship HDR10+ ADVANCED on Samsung TVs, and it is built into every Fire TV device by default.

Is Christopher Judge involved?

No. Judge voices Kratos in the 2018 God of War and 2022's Ragnarok, and he is not part of the series cast. He has publicly backed the decision to cast a different actor for television, while criticising Amazon for not hiring writers from the games. He has said he is not pursuing the role himself.

Another game adaptation, another streaming service

The pipeline is crowded. Sega's Golden Axe animated series arrives on Paramount+ on 16 September, and Rockstar is going as far as premiering an extended look at GTA 6 on Netflix before it appears anywhere else. Streaming services have worked out that a recognisable game logo pulls an audience that a new drama title cannot.

God of War is a bigger swing than most. The Norse games sold tens of millions of copies on the strength of a father-son story rather than the combat, which is the part a television adaptation can actually reproduce. Getting Kratos right was always the hard bit, and Amazon has now had to solve it twice.
