Alexa+ Is Now Free on Every Fire TV, No Prime Membership Required
Amazon has dropped the paywall on its AI assistant for Fire TV. As of today, Alexa+ is rolling out free to every compatible Fire TV device in the US, with no Amazon Prime membership and no separate subscription required. The upgrade that previously cost $19.99 a month for non-Prime members now activates automatically.
The change lands on Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon's own Ember smart TVs, and select Hisense and Panasonic smart TVs that ship with Alexa+ built in. Amazon says more devices will be added over time, though it has not named which ones.
What actually changes on your TV
Classic Alexa on Fire TV needed exact keywords to work. Alexa+ understands natural, conversational requests and can hold a follow-up exchange instead of resetting after every command. Ask for "something newer" or a show "with a female lead" after an initial search, and it refines the results rather than making you start over.
Amazon also built in features specific to a TV context: identifying actors on screen without picking up a phone, moving content between Fire TV devices by voice, and using the TV as a hub for smart home control, including camera feeds and lighting. The company says customers use Alexa+ on Fire TV nearly twice as often as they used original Alexa, and that people pick its top recommendation 40 percent more often.
What still requires Prime or a paid plan
The free tier on Fire TV has real limits. Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and the more advanced Home Modes automation stay locked behind Prime or the paid Alexa+ Standard plan. Alexa+ on other Alexa hardware — Echo speakers and displays — is unaffected by this change and still needs Prime or a subscription to unlock the AI assistant there.
How to get it
There is nothing to install and nothing to turn on. Amazon is pushing the upgrade automatically to eligible Fire TV hardware in the US, so if your device qualifies, Alexa+ replaces classic Alexa on its own. If your remote's mic button still triggers the old assistant after a few days, a restart of the Fire TV device is the first thing to try, since the rollout is staggered rather than instant for every account.
Why Amazon is giving it away now
Alexa+ first reached Echo devices in a limited preview in 2025 before expanding to the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and parts of Europe earlier this year. Making the Fire TV version free removes the biggest reason a non-Prime household would stick with the older, keyword-based Alexa. It also puts a conversational AI assistant in front of anyone who owns one of the best-selling streaming sticks on the market, at a moment when Google is retiring its own Assistant in favor of Gemini.

For now, the free rollout is US-only. Amazon has not said when, or if, it will extend the same no-cost access to Fire TV owners in the UK, Canada, Australia, or the rest of Europe, where Alexa+ is already available on Echo hardware under the old pricing rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Alexa+ really free on Fire TV now?
Yes. Amazon is rolling Alexa+ out to every compatible Fire TV device in the US at no additional cost, removing the $19.99 monthly fee that non-Prime members previously had to pay to use it.
Which Fire TV devices get free Alexa+?
Current-generation Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon's Ember smart TVs, and select Hisense and Panasonic smart TVs with Alexa+ built in are eligible now. Amazon says it plans to add more devices over time.
Do I need to do anything to get Alexa+ on my Fire TV?
No. The upgrade activates automatically on eligible devices in the US. There is no app to download and no subscription to start. If it hasn't appeared after a few days, restart your Fire TV device, since the rollout is staggered.
What's still locked behind Prime with the free Fire TV version?
Alexa Routines, access to specific Ring camera moments, and the more advanced Home Modes automation still require a Prime membership or the paid Alexa+ Standard plan. Alexa+ on Echo speakers and displays is unchanged and still needs Prime or a subscription.
Is free Alexa+ on Fire TV available outside the US?
Not yet. This rollout is limited to US Fire TV devices. Amazon has not said whether or when it will extend free access to the UK, Canada, Australia, or Europe, where Alexa+ already runs on Echo hardware under the previous pricing.
