The Google Assistant phase-out date for phones is September 4, 2026. Status as of September 2026
- The date has not moved. Google has not announced any delay or change to the September 4 start. Earlier Assistant deadlines slipped (see below). This one has not.
- It is a staged rollout, not one switch-off. Google said it "may take a few weeks to reach everyone". If a phone still has Assistant in late September, it probably has not been reached yet. It is not a sign the plan changed. Google has not announced that the rollout is complete.
- Where Assistant still works: cars with Google built-in; Google Home and Nest speakers and smart displays; Google TV; and the docked Pixel Tablet. Google's Gemini help page says that on smart displays, speakers, TVs, cars and Pixel Tablets, "Google Assistant will continue to respond."
- Phones that cannot run Gemini, or that are in countries where Gemini is not offered, keep Assistant for now. Google has not published the device or country list.
- Budget Android Go phones were handled separately. Gemini Go began replacing Assistant Go in June 2026 on Android Go devices with 2GB of RAM or more.
- Kids' accounts: for supervised children under 13, parents turn Gemini on or off in Family Link. Google has not said what a child's phone falls back to if a parent keeps Gemini off after Assistant is removed.

The removal is not instant. Google says the process "may take a few weeks to reach everyone", so the phone next to you and the phone in your pocket may lose Assistant on different days. Gemini takes over as the assistant that answers "Hey Google" and a long press of the power button.
Which devices lose Assistant
The notice covers the mobile side of Google's ecosystem rather than everything Assistant has ever run on. Based on the wording Google has sent out, the September 4 cut-off applies to:
- Android phones and tablets, including the Pixel line.
- Wear OS smartwatches paired to those phones.
- Headphones and earbuds that trigger Assistant from the bud or the phone.
- Android Auto when it is projected from a phone rather than built into the car.
The one clearly stated exception is vehicles with Google built-in, where the software runs on the car's own hardware. Google's notice says Assistant "will continue to function beyond September 4, 2026" in those cars, so drivers of models with native Google infotainment are not on this timetable.
What is still unsettled
Two gaps are worth flagging honestly, because Google has not closed them. The first is hardware that cannot run Gemini — devices below Gemini's requirements, or in countries where Gemini is not offered, have been described as keeping Assistant through a longer wind-down rather than losing it on September 4. Google has not published the device list or the country list that decides this.
The second is the docked Pixel Tablet and Google's living-room hardware. Google's Gemini help page lists Pixel Tablets alongside smart displays, speakers, TVs and cars as devices where Assistant keeps responding. Gemini is confirmed for Google TV and for Home speakers and displays, but there is no forced switchover date for any of them.
On speakers and displays, the replacement is opt-in for now. Gemini for Home is in early access in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico and much of Europe. It works on the Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Home Mini (1st gen) and the Nest Hub and Hub Max. Google's support page warns that once you switch a home to Gemini for Home, "it can't switch back to Google Assistant." Until you opt in, those devices keep Assistant.
Google's own Assistant support pages already carry a banner confirming the direction of travel, stating that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices and that Gemini understands the same commands. The September date, though, has come from the emails going out to users rather than a published support article.
What to do if your phone still has Assistant
Because the switch is one-way, do your checking before the rollout reaches your phone. You cannot undo it afterwards.
- Confirm Gemini is available to you. Open the Gemini app and sign in with the Google Account you actually use on the phone. If it is not offered in your country, expect to keep Assistant for longer.
- Check the accounts on shared devices. Assistant on a family tablet or a paired watch follows the account signed in there, not the one on your main phone.
- Test your voice triggers. Try "Hey Google" and the power-button long press with Gemini set as the assistant, and check that your headphones' squeeze or hold gesture still reaches it.
- Note anything Assistant does that you depend on. Run your routines, alarms and smart-home commands through Gemini once while you can still switch back.
- Family Link accounts need a look. Gemini access for users under 13, or the equivalent age locally, is controlled separately in Family Link.
A deadline that has moved before
This end date has slipped more than once. Google originally signalled the mobile handover for the end of 2025, then moved it into 2026, and an Android Auto support page previously pointed at March 2026 before that passed without the removal happening. This time Google has not moved the date, and a rollout that takes "a few weeks" could reasonably run into October.
What is different this time is that the message is arriving directly in users' inboxes with a specific date and the explicit warning that the change cannot be reversed on a device once applied. Gemini has been the default on new Android phones for a while — it is already the icon sitting in the corner of apps like Maps, as we noted when Gemini features first arrived in Google Maps. September 4 is simply the point where the old assistant stops being a fallback.
If your phone is still on a recent security patch you will get the change through a server-side switch rather than a system update, so there is nothing to install — Pixel owners who just took the August Android 17 update will not find Assistant removed by it.
