The second is the docked Pixel Tablet and Google's living-room hardware. Anyone relying on that dock should treat its timing as unknown.

Google's own Assistant support pages already carry a banner confirming the direction of travel, stating that Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices and that Gemini understands the same commands. The September date, though, has come from the emails going out to users rather than a published support article.

What to do before September 4

Because the switch is one-way, the sensible work is the checking you do now rather than anything you can undo later.

Confirm Gemini is available to you. Open the Gemini app and sign in with the Google Account you actually use on the phone. If it is not offered in your country, expect to stay on Assistant longer than September.
Check the accounts on shared devices. Assistant on a family tablet or a paired watch follows the account signed in there, not the one on your main phone.
Test your voice triggers. Try "Hey Google" and the power-button long press with Gemini set as the assistant, and check that your headphones' squeeze or hold gesture still reaches it.
Note anything Assistant does that you depend on. Routines, alarms and smart-home commands are worth running through once with Gemini before the option to switch back disappears.

A deadline that has moved before

This end date has slipped more than once. Google originally signalled the mobile handover for the end of 2025, then moved it into 2026, and an Android Auto support page previously pointed at March 2026 before that passed without the removal happening. What is different this time is that the message is arriving directly in users' inboxes with a specific date and the explicit warning that the change cannot be reversed on a device once applied. Gemini has been the default on new Android phones for a while — it is already the icon sitting in the corner of apps like Maps, as we noted when Gemini features first arrived in Google Maps. September 4 is simply the point where the old assistant stops being a fallback.

If your phone is still on a recent security patch you will get the change through a server-side switch rather than a system update, so there is nothing to install — Pixel owners who just took the August Android 17 update will not find Assistant removed by it.
