Android local multiplayer splits into three lanes, and they need three different sets of hardware. Every game below carries its lane as a label. Read this section first and you will never install the wrong one again.
Lane A — one device, same screen. Two to six people share a single phone or tablet, with the screen split into halves or corner zones, or the device passed back and forth. No network of any kind is involved, so airplane mode works fine.
Lane A is what people mean by “2 player games on same phone android”. It is the cheapest lane: one device, no accounts, no setup. The cost is space — four players on a 6-inch phone is not playable, and we say so on every entry.

Lane B — two or more devices, no internet. One person turns on their phone hotspot, everyone else joins it, and the game finds the host on that local network. Nothing leaves the room and no mobile data is used.
This is the lane behind “android games local wifi multiplayer no internet” and “offline multiplayer games android bluetooth”. Under the hood, most modern examples use Google’s Nearby Connections API, which combines Bluetooth, BLE and Wi-Fi and works with no internet at a range of roughly 100 feet. Older games instead scan the local subnet directly, which is why turning mobile data off matters so much.
Lane C — Android TV or HDMI out, with real gamepads. The game runs on a TV-connected Android device and each player holds a physical controller. This is the only lane where true console-style split screen exists on Android.

Does Android have split screen for games? The honest answer
Android has no system feature that puts two players into one game. That sentence settles most of the confusion around this query, so here is what the OS actually does instead.
Android’s multi-window mode tiles two separate apps side by side. Two tiled windows are two separate app instances, not two players in one match. You can put a game next to YouTube; you cannot put player one next to player two.
The old developer-options trick, Force activities to be resizable, only forces a game to tile at all. It flips the effect of the app’s android:resizeableActivity flag, which most games set to false. It has never created a second player.
That toggle is also becoming pointless in 2026. For apps targeting Android 16 (API 36), resizeableActivity="false", minAspectRatio and maxAspectRatio are ignored on any display whose smallest width is 600dp or more. Google Play’s target-API requirement moves to API 36 in August 2026, so games will tile on tablets and foldables whether the developer likes it or not.
The conclusion does not change. Big screens will show two windows; two windows are still two apps.
What did change is Android 17. It started rolling out to Pixel phones on 16 June 2026 with a foldable gaming mode that splits the inner display — the game on the top half, a virtual gamepad on the bottom half. That is a genuine OS-level split screen for gaming, and it is for one player.
Android 17 also adds a system-level virtual controller that emulates physical controller input, plus device-wide controller remapping that is saved across wired and Bluetooth pads. Both help lane C a lot. Neither turns one phone into two players.
There is one more lane-C route people miss. Android 16 shipped a desktop mode over USB-C to an external monitor, and Android 17 extends it toward overlapping windows. A phone, a USB-C hub, a TV and two pads is now a couch setup with no Android TV box at all.
So: for real split screen on one Android device, the honest answer is an emulator. Dolphin runs GameCube and Wii games with native 2–4 player split screen on a single phone, tablet or TV box. That is entry 38 below.
How we picked (26 August 2026)
- Live Google Play listing, checked on 26 August 2026. If the listing did not resolve, the game is not in the numbered list. Four well-known picks failed that test and are named in the delisted graveyard instead.
- Exact package ID printed for every entry. This category is full of clones with the same name, so the ID is the only reliable identifier.
- Lane assigned from the developer’s own words. We used the Play description, the developer’s support pages, and the store’s own flags. Crossy Road, for example, says “Same device multiplayer!” and nothing about multi-device local Wi-Fi, so it is lane A only.
- Price, ads, IAP, update date, installs and rating copied from the listing. We quote the install band Google shows, never an invented download count.
- A stated catch on every single game. Ad load, hardware needed, buried menus, paid-per-device costs. No entry is catch-free.
- Honest limits. We did not run all 40 games on two handsets in one sitting. Lane assignments come from listings and developer documentation, not a 40-game lab test. Where a mode is buried or unconfirmed, we say so in the entry rather than assert it.

The catch is controls. Two people sharing one touchscreen is genuinely cramped, and the free build carries ads plus a ticket-based IAP layer. Eric Froemling’s own project page is worth a read before you set up a TV session.
Best for: any group, any hardware, especially with gamepads. Skip if: you want an ad-free experience without spending.

The catch is depth, or the total absence of it. Interstitial ads sit between rounds, it is strictly two players, and you will exhaust it in a week. Airplane mode kills the ads and the game still runs.
Best for: two people, one phone, five spare minutes. Skip if: you want something you will still open next month.

The catch is the game count. A meaningful share of the minigames are re-skins of each other, so the advertised total is inflated. Untouched, the ad load between rounds is heavy.

The catch is that it is the same product category with the same problems. Aggressive interstitials, thin minigames, and a name you will see on a dozen other listings. We carry one alternate here on purpose rather than padding the list with six identical packs.

Best for: two people who want depth, not a party. Skip if: anyone in the room is impatient.

Two catches. The rebrand to “War.io” buried the local-Wi-Fi line deep in the description, and the last store update was 9 September 2024, so open the mode picker and confirm the LAN lobby before you plan a party around it. Its search results are dominated by modded APK sites — install from Google Play only.
Best for: a dozen phones on one hotspot. Skip if: you need a recently updated app.
25. Mini Militia Classic : DA2 MMC

Split-screen Minecraft is a console feature and does not exist on Android.

Terraria costs $4.99 on Google Play with no ads and no in-app purchases, and its mobile multiplayer is officially documented. One device hosts a world and up to four players on the same local network join it. 505 Games’ own support article tells you to put the host device into hotspot mode, which makes this a true no-internet co-op game.
Two catches. It is paid on every single device, which multiplies the cost of a four-player session to about $20. The host takes a real battery and thermal hit, and if the host app is killed the session ends for everyone.
Best for: the best paid local co-op on Android. Skip if: you want to join a PC host — mobile can only join mobile hosts.
29. Soul Knight

Up to four players in offline LAN co-op on the same Wi-Fi, and its listing invites you to “play together with your gang for an offline multiplayer LAN game”. The host taps Host Game and everyone else joins from the same network. It is the best action co-op in lane B and it plays well on touch.
The catch is version parity. The LAN mode is less maintained than the online one, and if one phone auto-updates ahead of the others the lobby silently stops working. The game leans on gacha-style unlocks and reward-ad prompts.
Best for: four friends and a hotspot roguelike run. Skip if: your group cannot keep app versions in sync.
30. Mindustry

Mindustry is free with no ads, no in-app purchases and no account, and it is the only lane-B pick that costs nothing on every device. It is a factory-automation RTS with cross-platform multiplayer that discovers hosts on the local network. Terraria costs money per device and Minecraft costs money plus a Microsoft account; this costs neither.
The catch is the learning curve. It is a conveyor-belt strategy game, not a party game, and a new player will spend the first half-hour confused. Check the in-game Join Game screen for the local servers list once your hotspot is up.
Best for: two people who like systems, at zero cost. Skip if: you want something anyone can pick up in 30 seconds.
31. Among Us

The Local tab lists any game hosted on the same Wi-Fi network, so a group in one room can play entirely off a phone hotspot with no data. It is the best social-deduction option once you have four or more people with their own devices.
The catch is the player count. It needs at least four humans to function and is much better with seven or more, so it fails completely for a pair. The free Android version is ad-riddled, and its 3.9 rating comes from 13,647,741 people, the biggest sample on this page.
Best for: a group of seven with no internet. Skip if: there are only two of you.
32. DUAL!

The most inventive idea on this page. Two phones are laid side by side and projectiles physically travel from one screen into the other. Nothing else on Android does this.
Get the connection method right, because most write-ups have it backwards. The listing says you can battle locally over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and it flags Bluetooth as a beta feature that is not guaranteed to work with every device. The reliable path is both phones on the same Wi-Fi, with Manual IP Discovery from the Wi-Fi lobby as the fallback.
Best for: the best two-phone party trick on Android. Skip if: you were counting on Bluetooth pairing.
33. PPSSPP - PSP emulator

This is the lane no competitor covers. PPSSPP reproduces the PSP’s ad-hoc local wireless, so two Android phones on one hotspot can play Monster Hunter, Ridge Racer or Call of Duty: Road to Victory together. The PSP library was built for exactly this kind of sit-next-to-each-other play.
Two real catches. You must legally own and dump your own UMDs, and we do not link ROMs.
PPSSPP 1.20’s newer Relay ad-hoc mode routes traffic through a central server, so genuinely offline play means enabling the built-in PRO ad hoc server on the host. Set the port offset to 10000, which is the value Android needs because of privileged-port restrictions. The official multiplayer guide and the network settings page have the exact toggles.
Best for: an entire library of purpose-built local multiplayer games. Skip if: you do not own the discs.
34. RetroArch

RetroArch’s netplay works over a local network, which turns two Android devices into a couch setup for the whole retro co-op catalogue. The package we verified on 26 August 2026 is com.retroarch, and Libretro publishes several separate builds, so match the developer name before you install.
The catch is difficulty. Both devices must run the identical core version or the session desyncs immediately, the netplay interface is unforgiving, and you supply your own legally dumped ROMs. Only install this if you already use RetroArch; if you want retro co-op with less pain, our free Sega emulator guide is a gentler start.
Best for: people who already have a working RetroArch setup. Skip if: you have never configured a core in your life.
Lane C — Android TV, HDMI and real gamepads
35. Beach Buggy Racing

The original Beach Buggy Racing is the flagship true split-screen Android game: up to four players sharing one TV screen, Mario Kart style. The package ID is com.vectorunit.purple.googleplay and Vector Unit documents the mode in its own FAQ.
Three gates nobody else mentions. Split screen is behind the premium in-app purchase on free-to-play builds, you need two to four physical controllers connected at once, and Vector Unit states outright that the game does not support Chromecast — you need an HDMI cable or a directly connected device such as an Android TV. Casting to a Chromecast is the single most common way readers’ setups fail.
Best for: four people, one TV, four pads. Skip if: a Chromecast is your only TV device.
36. Beach Buggy Racing 2

Number 36 is here as a warning, because this is the entry every other list gets wrong. The sequel is live at com.vectorunit.cobalt.googleplay, it looks far better than the original, and it was updated on 31 July 2026. It is not the split-screen one.
Vector Unit put split screen in the premium console edition, Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure. The Android build sells online competitions and tournaments instead, so a couch race on it is not a thing you can buy.
Note the package trail too. com.vectorunit.yellow.googleplay is a dead link and com.vectorunit.yellow is Beach Buggy Blitz, a third game entirely.
Best for: a free solo kart racer with Android TV support. Skip if: you want four players on one TV — install Beach Buggy Racing above instead.
37. Riptide GP: Renegade

Riptide GP: Renegade costs $2.99 on Google Play with no ads and no in-app purchases, and its description confirms local split-screen races with up to four players. It is the best-looking split-screen title on Android hardware and it runs well on Shield TV class boxes. Vector Unit’s official game page has the details.
The catch is gamepads. Additional controllers are required, so a four-player race means four pads plus a TV. Two players on a phone screen is not a supported configuration, no matter what the keyword suggests.
Best for: a paid, ad-free split-screen racer. Skip if: you only own one controller. Our best racing games for Android list covers the single-player alternatives.
38. Dolphin Emulator

Dolphin is the literal answer to “split screen android games” and nobody prints it. It runs GameCube and Wii titles with genuine 2–4 player split screen on a single phone, tablet or Android TV box — Mario Kart: Double Dash, Smash Bros. Melee and Brawl, Wii Sports, TimeSplitters.
The split screen is drawn by the game itself, which is why it works on one device.
Two catches, stated plainly. You supply your own dumped discs and we will not link ROMs. Four-way split screen on GameCube-era titles needs a strong chip, and Bluetooth pairing beyond two or three pads gets flaky on many phones.
Best for: real console split screen on one Android device. Skip if: you do not own the games.
39. Moonlight Game Streaming

Moonlight turns an Android TV box or tablet into a screen for a PC on the same Wi-Fi, with two pads plugged into the Android side. Nothing leaves your LAN, so it fits the no-internet promise better than most of this list. It is the “you already own a gaming PC” route to couch co-op.
The catch is the prerequisite. You need a PC running Sunshine or NVIDIA GameStream on the same network, so this is a sidebar option, not a top-ten pick. Its last store update was 25 February 2024, and Steam Link is the zero-configuration alternative if you use Steam.
Best for: PC owners who want real split-screen PC games on the TV. Skip if: you do not own a gaming PC.
40. AirConsole - TV Gaming Console

Install it on an Android TV, put the game on the big screen, and everyone uses their own phone as a controller. No gamepad purchase, no app install for guests. It is the fastest route from “six people in a room” to “playing something together”.
The catch is fatal for this article’s main promise: AirConsole fails the no-internet test completely. It is a web-delivered platform, so both the TV and every phone need a live connection. Most of the worthwhile library sits behind the Hero subscription, and its 3.0 rating is the lowest on this page.
Best for: a big group with Wi-Fi and no controllers. Skip if: the whole point was playing with no internet.

Games other lists call local multiplayer that are not
These are all live on Google Play, and none of them belong in a local multiplayer list. We checked each listing on 26 August 2026.
- Asphalt 8 — the listing is now titled “Asphalt 8 - Car Racing Game” and its entire multiplayer pitch is server-based: World Series, seasons, passes, timed events. The old local Wi-Fi race mode is not mentioned anywhere on the current page. Do not plan a hotspot race around it.
- Modern Combat 5 — live, but always-online and account-gated with no local mode. Modern Combat 4, the entry that actually had local Wi-Fi multiplayer, is gone from Google Play.
- Snake Rivals and Hide Online — both appear on major “best local multiplayer games for Android” lists. Both are online matchmade games with no local mode at all.
- Stardew Valley — excellent game, no multiplayer on mobile of any kind. Co-op is a PC and console feature. It belongs on our best offline games for Android list instead.
- Minecraft split screen — a console feature. Android Bedrock has LAN, not split screen.
- AirConsole — a genuinely good TV party platform, but it needs the internet on every device. It is in lane C above with that caveat attached, never in a no-internet list.
- Payback 2 — live at
net.apex_designs.payback2with Android TV support and a local-network heritage, but we could not confirm from the current listing that a local Wi-Fi lobby still ships. We left it out rather than assert something unverified. - Beach Buggy Racing 2 — live at
com.vectorunit.cobalt.googleplayand constantly listed as an Android split-screen racer. Split screen is a feature of the console edition, Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure. Install the original Beach Buggy Racing for a couch race. - Bowmasters — now listed as “Bowmasters: Archery Shooting”, and the visible description is dominated by season passes with no mention of a two-players-one-device duel. Tank Stars covers the same slot with a clearer local mode.
The clone trap: check the package ID before you install
The same-device minigame category is the most cloned corner of Google Play. Names like “Stickman Party”, “2 3 4 Player Games” and “Supreme Duelist Stickman” have dozens of near-identical listings from different developers, with different ad loads and different quality. The name is not an identifier — the package ID is.
Here are the exact IDs for the games we recommend. Open the Play listing and check the URL, or scroll to the bottom of the store page where Google prints the developer name.

Two package traps are worth naming outright. com.vectorunit.yellow.googleplay is a dead link and com.vectorunit.yellow is Beach Buggy Blitz, which is a different game with no split screen. And Mini Militia has two live packages with different multiplayer priorities, so pick deliberately.
We deliberately carry only one alternate in the “2 3 4 player” slot. Six interchangeable ad farms would be padding, and we already list four packs in that category.
The delisted graveyard, and why the classics died
Four of the most-recommended local multiplayer games on Android are simply gone. Each of these listings returned a 404 on Google Play on 26 August 2026, in every locale we tested. If a 2026 article still recommends them, it was not checked.

Spaceteam is the painful one. It was the single most recommended local co-op game on Android for a decade, and only APK mirrors remain. Duel Otters is the canonical “two players holding opposite ends of one phone” pick, and its surviving iOS listing is why stale lists keep repeating it.
Now the reason so many of these died. Google Play Games Services’ real-time and turn-based multiplayer APIs were closed to new apps on 17 September 2019 and shut down on 31 March 2020. A whole generation of 2014–2018 Android games built their multiplayer button on those APIs, and that button now does nothing.
The clock is still running. Under Google’s published Play Games Services deprecation schedule, the deprecated v1 APIs were removed from the SDK on 15 June 2026, and the games v1 SDK itself is removed in June 2027, at which point the calls fail even for apps built on older SDK versions. The June 2026 date has already passed, so expect another round of quietly broken multiplayer buttons this year.
Two more shutdowns matter here. Google Play Instant was discontinued in December 2025 — instant apps can no longer be published and the Play services Instant APIs stopped working. Any guide telling you to try a multiplayer game instantly without installing it is out of date.
Hardware reality: what you actually need per lane
The most common failed setup in this whole category is trying to cast a split-screen racer to a Chromecast. Vector Unit says outright that Beach Buggy Racing does not support Chromecast and that you need an HDMI cable or a directly connected device such as an Android TV. There is no workaround.

Two more hardware truths worth knowing before you buy pads. Most phones pair reliably with two or three Bluetooth controllers before input lag or dropouts start; hitting four usually means a USB hub with wired pads, or an Android TV box rather than a phone. Android 17’s device-wide controller remapping helps once they are connected, because a mapping saved for one pad carries across wired and Bluetooth.

Ads, kids and how to kill both
Two-thirds of lane A is interstitial ad farms, and there are three real fixes rather than one. Here they are in order of effort.
- Turn on airplane mode. Every lane-A game here runs with no network, so cutting the connection stops most ads from loading. It also proves the game really is local, which is the same test we recommend in the verify it yourself section.
- Buy the remove-ads IAP. 2 Player games : the Challenge has a single $6.99 in-app purchase, which is the cleanest one-off fix in lane A. Air Hockey Challenge, Supreme Duelist and Red Hands all carry IAP tiers too.
- Pick a game with no ads flag at all. On their 26 August 2026 listings, Soccer Random, The Battle of Polytopia, Unciv, Let’s Play! Oink Games, Mindustry, Terraria, Minecraft, Riptide GP: Renegade, Dolphin, PPSSPP, RetroArch, Moonlight and BombSquad Remote carry no “Contains ads” flag.
For parents handing a phone to a child, the content ratings matter more than the ad load. Red Hands, 1 2 3 4 Player Games, Glow Hockey, Air Hockey Challenge, Fruit Ninja, Crossy Road, Ludo King and Chess are all rated Everyone.
Three picks here are not for young children. Special Forces Group 2 is rated Mature 17+, and BombSquad, Tank Stars, Mini Militia and Stickman-style party packs are rated Teen. Check the Data safety card on the listing too, because free minigame packs in this category collect more than paid ones.

Why your local lobby is empty: 8 fixes
An empty lobby is almost always one of eight things. Work down this list in order and you will find it.
- Mobile data is still on. This is the number one cause. Android will route traffic over cellular instead of the hotspot, and the guest never sees the host. Turn mobile data off on every guest device.
- Version mismatch. One phone auto-updated overnight and the others did not. Minecraft, Soul Knight and RetroArch all break silently this way. Check the version number in each app’s settings.
- Missing Nearby devices permission. On Android 12 and newer, local discovery needs the Nearby devices permission. On older versions it needs Location permission with Location Services actually switched on. Wi-Fi must be enabled even when no network is attached.
- AP isolation on the Wi-Fi. Hotel, cafe and campus networks deliberately stop devices seeing each other. Use a phone hotspot instead, always.
- 5GHz hotspot, 2.4GHz guest. An older guest phone cannot see a 5GHz-only hotspot. Set the host hotspot to 2.4GHz in its settings.
- Battery saver killed the host app. Android suspends background apps aggressively. Turn battery saver off on the host and keep the screen awake.
- Host is thermal throttling. A phone hosting Terraria or Minecraft for four players gets hot and starts dropping frames for everyone. Take the case off and keep it out of the sun.

How to verify a local mode yourself in 60 seconds
Our audit is dated 26 August 2026 and listings change, so here is the drill we used. It takes about a minute per game and it works forever.
- Read the full description, not the summary. Tap “More” and search for the words local, LAN, same device, split screen or Wi-Fi. Those are the words that mean something.
- Distrust the word “offline”. In this genre it almost always means versus a computer, not versus a human in the room. Tank Stars and Bowmasters both use it that way.
- Check the Updated date. A local mode in a game last updated three years ago is a coin flip. A 2026 date means someone is still shipping.
- Sort reviews by newest and search for “local”. If a mode was removed, the recent one-star reviews will say so before any article does.
- Open the developer’s own support page. Vector Unit, 505 Games and Innersloth all document their local modes properly. A developer with no support page is a risk.
- Then test it. Install on both phones, turn on airplane mode or the hotspot, and get into one match before you plan an evening around it.
How to set up a hotspot game with no internet (every lane B pick)
This one procedure works for every game in lane B: Minecraft, Terraria, Soul Knight, Mindustry, Among Us, Mini Militia, Special Forces Group 2, DUAL!, PPSSPP and RetroArch. Do it once and it becomes automatic.
- Install the same version on every device. Open Google Play on each phone, install the game, and check that the version number matches. A version mismatch is the most common reason a lobby stays empty, and it happens whenever one phone auto-updates first.
- Turn on the host’s hotspot. On the host phone, open Settings, then Network and internet, then Hotspot and tethering, and switch on Wi-Fi hotspot. Set the band to 2.4GHz so older guest phones can see it. You do not need mobile data, because the hotspot still creates a local network.
- Join the hotspot from every guest device. Connect each guest to the host’s hotspot name in Wi-Fi settings. Ignore the “no internet” warning and tap to stay connected when Android offers to switch networks.
- Turn mobile data off everywhere. On every guest phone, switch mobile data off completely. If you skip this, Android routes around the hotspot and the host will never appear in the lobby list.
- Grant Nearby devices permission and keep Wi-Fi on. Open the game and accept the Nearby devices prompt on Android 12 and newer. On older Android versions, grant Location permission and switch Location Services on, and leave Wi-Fi enabled even though there is no internet.
- Host the game, then join from the guests. On the host, choose Host Game, Create Room, or in Minecraft set the world to “Visible to LAN Players”. On each guest, open the Local or LAN tab and pick the host from the list. If nothing appears after ten seconds, go back to step 4.
