Google Gives College Students a Free Year of AI Pro With New Gemini Study Tools

Google is giving college students in the US a free year of AI Pro, normally $19.99 a month, alongside a batch of new study features spreading across Gemini, Search, and Lens. Students outside the US get a free year of the lower AI Plus tier instead, worth $4.99 a month. Both offers require verifying student status through SheerID and run through December 31, 2026.
The free year covers Gemini Spark, 5TB of cloud storage, and 4x the usage limits on AI Pro in the US, or Gemini Omni, 400GB of storage, and 2x usage limits on AI Plus internationally. Google is also bundling AI Pro with YouTube Premium at up to 70% off for eligible students. After 12 months, the subscriptions convert to paid unless canceled.
Deep Research now works inside Gemini Live
The biggest functional change is Deep Research moving into Gemini Live, the voice mode of the Gemini app. Ask for a research report by voice, close the app, and Gemini keeps working in the background. A notification arrives when the report is ready, and from there the results can be discussed conversationally rather than read as a static document.
Gemini can also now build interactive 3D simulations for topics that are hard to explain in text, such as rotating and zooming a model of DNA to see how it's structured. Both features are rolling out inside the Gemini app now.
A dedicated Student Hub
Google is opening a new hub at gemini.google.com/students that pulls its scattered study tools into one place: study notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes. Study Notebooks, which first appeared in June, let students upload class materials to generate lesson plans and quizzes, and are gaining graph and image support along with Google Calendar integration that pulls syllabus dates straight into a student's calendar.
AI Mode in Search gets its own study tools
Search's AI Mode is getting matching features. It can now generate custom interactive visuals for complex subjects — Google's example shows a pH scale users can manipulate directly — with that rollout arriving over the coming weeks. AI Mode also gains custom practice quizzes for major standardized tests, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, NEET, JEE, and Brazil's ENEM.
Notebook integration is landing in AI Mode's side panel too, letting students organize class materials and past AI conversations without leaving Search. Google Lens is picking up a new interactive learning mode that lets students photograph a homework problem and get guided feedback rather than a direct answer, rolling out globally in English over the coming weeks.
- Free AI Pro (US) or AI Plus (international): college students, verified via SheerID, redeemable through December 31, 2026
- Deep Research in Gemini Live: rolling out now in the Gemini app
- 3D simulations: rolling out now in the Gemini app
- AI Mode visuals and notebook panel: rolling out over the coming weeks
- Lens interactive learning: rolling out globally in English over the coming weeks
Why it matters
This is Google's clearest pitch yet to pull students away from ChatGPT before the fall semester starts. Pairing a free premium subscription with study-specific features across three separate products — Gemini, Search, and Lens — is a broader push than last year's more limited student tools, and follows Google’s steady push of Gemini into more of its apps, including the recent Gemini in Chrome rollout for Android users.
Students who want to check eligibility can start at the Gemini student hub and verify through SheerID; everyone else will see AI Mode and Lens changes appear in Search and the Gemini app gradually over the next few weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a free year of Google AI Pro as a student?
Verify your college student status through SheerID at the new Gemini student hub (gemini.google.com/students). US students get a free year of AI Pro; students outside the US get a free year of the AI Plus tier instead. The offer must be redeemed by December 31, 2026.
What happens after the free year of Gemini AI Pro ends?
The subscription automatically converts to a paid plan unless you cancel before the 12 months are up. AI Pro normally costs $19.99 a month in the US, and AI Plus normally costs $4.99 a month internationally.
What is Deep Research in Gemini Live?
It lets you ask Gemini to research a topic by voice, then close the app while it works in the background. You get a notification when the report is ready and can discuss the findings conversationally instead of reading a static document.
Does AI Mode in Google Search now help with studying?
Yes. AI Mode is gaining interactive visuals for complex topics, custom practice quizzes for tests like the SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT, and a notebook panel for organizing class materials and past AI conversations, rolling out over the coming weeks.
Is the Google Lens study feature available outside English?
Not yet. Google says the new Lens interactive learning mode, which lets students photograph a problem and get guided feedback, is rolling out globally but only in English for now.
