Google has finished rolling out Gemini in Chrome to every eligible Android phone in the United States, three months after previewing it. The update also switches on Auto Browse, an agentic feature that can click through web pages and fill out forms on its own, for subscribers who pay for AI Pro or AI Ultra.

The rollout reaches phones running Android 12 or later with at least 4GB of RAM, provided the device's language is set to English (US). Google first showed the features off in May and said they would begin appearing at the end of June, so this marks the point where the gradual server-side rollout has caught up to essentially all qualifying devices in the country.

What Gemini in Chrome actually does

A new sparkle icon sits to the right of Chrome's address bar on Android, with a backup entry point in the three-dot overflow menu for anyone whose toolbar looks different. Tapping it slides up a chat sheet that closely mirrors the desktop version of Gemini in Chrome, and it can pull in whatever page you currently have open as context for a question.

In practice that means you can ask it to summarize a long article, explain a dense topic in plain language, or pull just the ingredients out of a recipe blog without scrolling past a wall of text. Because of the Google app integrations layered on top, Gemini can also save those ingredients to Google Keep, add an event straight to Calendar from a page you're viewing, or search your Gmail inbox without leaving Chrome. Nano Banana, Google's image tool, is wired in as well, so you can ask Gemini to edit or restyle a photo you're looking at.

Auto Browse: the part that needs a subscription

The more ambitious piece is Auto Browse, and it is gated behind a paid Google AI plan. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US can hand Gemini a multi-step task and let it navigate the page, click links, and fill out forms on its own. Google's own examples include using details from an event ticket to book nearby parking and updating a recurring pet food order with new items.

Auto Browse stops short of finishing anything sensitive. It will not post on your behalf on social media or hand over payment details without you stepping in, so the last click on a purchase or a public post is still yours to make.

How to check if you have it

  • Confirm Chrome is updated to the latest version from the Play Store.
  • Check that your phone runs Android 12 or newer and has at least 4GB of RAM.
  • Set your device language to English (US) if it isn't already — that's a hard requirement for this rollout.
  • Look for the sparkle icon beside the address bar, or check the three-dot menu if you don't see it there.
  • Auto Browse only appears for accounts with an active AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.

As with most of Google's server-side rollouts, there's no toggle to force it on if your device qualifies but the feature hasn't shown up yet — it's a matter of the switch reaching your account. The Gemini icon replacing the old Assistant icon has already spread across several Google apps this year, including a similar swap inside Google Maps, so this fits a pattern of Gemini absorbing what used to be separate Assistant-branded tools. It also lands as Google prepares to shut the older Assistant down entirely — Google Assistant is set to stop working on phones, tablets and Wear OS starting September 4.

Chrome for Android has picked up several smaller upgrades recently too, including custom wallpapers and themes on the New Tab page, suggesting Google is treating the mobile browser as a bigger priority than it has in past years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What devices support Gemini in Chrome on Android?

Phones running Android 12 or later with at least 4GB of RAM qualify, provided the device's language is set to English (US). It is a US-only rollout for now.

Do I need to pay for Gemini in Chrome?

No, the core Gemini in Chrome features — summarizing pages, answering questions about what's on screen, and the Google app integrations — are free. Only Auto Browse, the agentic task-completion feature, requires an AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription.

What is Auto Browse in Chrome?

Auto Browse lets Gemini navigate web pages, click links, and fill out forms to complete multi-step tasks on your behalf, such as booking parking or updating an online order. It stops before finishing sensitive steps like posting publicly or entering payment details, so you still confirm those yourself.

Why don't I see the Gemini icon in Chrome yet?

The rollout is server-side, so even a fully updated, eligible device may not have the switch enabled on your account yet. Make sure Chrome is updated, your phone meets the Android 12 and 4GB RAM requirements, and your language is set to English (US), then check the three-dot menu if the icon isn't beside the address bar.

Is Gemini in Chrome replacing Google Assistant?

Not directly, but it fits the same trend. Google has been swapping the Assistant icon for Gemini across its apps throughout 2026, and it is shutting down the standalone Google Assistant on phones, tablets and Wear OS starting September 4.
