Gemini Free Users Switched to Auto on October 9, With Most Prompts Going to Flash-Lite

Google's Gemini app switched free users to a default "Auto" model setting starting October 9, 2026, and most of their prompts now go to Flash-Lite, Google's fastest model. The change applies to personal Google accounts without a Google AI subscription, including people using the Gemini app on Android phones in the US, and Google's help page lists no country exceptions.

What does Auto mean for free Gemini users?

Gemini's Auto setting picks a model for each prompt instead of letting a free user choose one. Google's help page says most prompts go to Flash-Lite, while prompts that need deeper reasoning may be routed to Flash or Pro. You no longer decide which one handles the request.

Turning off smart model selection doesn't hand back the bigger models. Google says that in that case, chats for users without an AI plan use Flash-Lite for every response. Reports from the evening of October 9 (Pacific time) said Auto, as the only choice in the model picker, was already reaching the vast majority of free accounts.

Low, medium and high effort levels

The Gemini app is also adding an effort setting. Google says that for each available model, you can choose low, medium or high effort. Higher effort makes Gemini more thorough on hard tasks, but it also uses more of your usage limit. Reports describe the three levels as replacing the earlier "Extended" option and say they are rolling out now.

That trade-off matters most to free users, who have the smallest limit. A high-effort request on a free account burns through the allowance faster than a quick, low-effort answer.

Gemini model access and limits by plan

The table below combines Google's help page, which publishes the usage-limit multipliers, with published reports on which models each plan keeps. Google's own model table uses check-mark graphics rather than text, so the model column for paid plans comes from those reports.

Google AI ProReported as unaffected by the new restrictions4x standard
Google AI UltraReported as unaffected by the new restrictions5x or 20x AI Pro, depending on subscription

One detail varies between sources: the Flash-Lite version number. Google's help page calls it simply Flash-Lite, while some reports identify it as Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers don't have a fixed date yet. Google says they should get an email explaining when the change reaches their account.

How this fits Google's other Gemini changes

It is not the first Gemini limits change this year. Google says earlier changes to usage limits and model availability took effect on May 17, 2026 for users over 18, and on July 24, 2026 for users under 18. It also lands weeks before Gems turn into skills, which we covered in what happens to your Gems on November 17.

For Android owners, Gemini is harder to avoid than it used to be. It answers the power-button shortcut on Pixel phones, as explained in why you can no longer switch back to Google Assistant, and it is built into Chrome after the US Android rollout of Gemini in Chrome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Gemini model do free users get now?

Since October 9, 2026, free Gemini users without a Google AI plan default to the Auto setting. Google says Auto sends most prompts to Flash-Lite and may route harder reasoning prompts to Flash or Pro. With smart model selection turned off, every free response uses Flash-Lite.

Can I still choose Gemini Pro for free?

No. Free accounts can no longer pick a model manually, because Auto decides which model handles each prompt. Google says Auto may still use Flash or Pro for prompts that need deeper reasoning, but you can't select Pro yourself.

What are Gemini's low, medium and high effort levels?

They are a new setting in the Gemini app that controls how thorough each available model is. Google says higher effort improves results on complex tasks but uses more of your usage limit. Reports say the levels replace the earlier Extended option.

Does the Gemini change affect AI Plus subscribers?

Yes. Reports say Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but no longer includes Pro. Google hasn't published a single date for AI Plus and says subscribers should get an email explaining when the change reaches them.

Is the Gemini Flash-Lite change happening in the US?

Yes. Google's help page applies the change to personal accounts without an AI subscription from October 9, 2026 and lists no country exceptions. That includes US users of the Gemini app on Android phones.
