Where does the Fitbit Edge sit in Google's lineup?

The Google Fitbit Edge fills the gap between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5. The Fitbit Air, which we covered when Google launched its $129.99 Pokémon Sleep edition, has no display at all. The Pixel Watch 5 is a full smartwatch. The Fitbit Edge is a band-style tracker with a pill-shaped screen, a physical side button and an 11.5mm-thin recycled aluminum case that weighs 17.7 grams without the band.

Google says the screen is its largest and brightest on a tracker so far, with 46% more viewing area than its previous trackers. It is also Google's first repairable fitness tracker: the battery is user-replaceable.

Fitbit Edge vs Pixel Watch 5: what you give up

Google's own US comparison page puts the Fitbit Edge next to the 45mm Pixel Watch 5. The trade is battery life and size against smartwatch features.

Health tracking is close to the watch. The Fitbit Edge lists an ECG app, AFib detection, SpO2, skin temperature, heart rate variability and monthly blood pressure and insulin resistance trends, the same Health Guardian metrics that reached watches with Google Health 5.09. What it lacks is the safety layer: no Fall Detection, no Emergency SOS and no Loss of Pulse Detection, according to the same comparison.

Battery and charging

The Google Fitbit Edge has a 65mAh battery rated for up to seven days. A full charge takes about 90 minutes, and Google says five minutes on the charger adds up to a day of use when the battery is low. Early reports put battery life with the always-on display turned on at roughly two days, a figure Google's spec page does not list.

Colors, bands and the Stephen Curry edition

The $179.99 model comes in four case and band pairs: Matte Black with Obsidian, Silver with Fog, Satin Pyrite with Olive, and Champagne Gold with Canyon. Small and large Active Band sizes are both in the box. The $219.99 Stephen Curry Special Edition pairs a Satin Pyrite case with a water-repellent band in rye tones, sold in Small/Medium or Medium/Large.

Where Google's own pages disagree

Google's announcement and its US store do not match on three points, so check before you buy:

  • Exercise modes: the announcement says more than 50; the store spec sheet and comparison page say 40+.
  • Google Maps: the announcement lists Google Maps among the on-wrist features; the store marks turn-by-turn directions "coming soon."
  • Finish names: the announcement calls the silver and gold cases Polished Silver and Warm Gold; the store calls them Satin Silver and Champagne Gold.

Treat Maps as a later update, not a launch feature. For other Google wearables news, see the Pixel Watch 5's first update.
