Honor Magic9 Launches September 28 With ARRI Color Science and a 500mm Clip-On Lens

Honor has set September 28 as the launch date for the Magic9 series, confirming the date on its own social channels alongside the first official look at the phone's rear. The headline addition is not a spec at all: a pair of clip-on telephoto lenses, the G200 and the new G500, that mount to the phone and reach an equivalent 200mm and 500mm.

What Honor has actually confirmed

The teaser images show a large rectangular camera module with three cutouts, replacing the circular island Honor has used since the Magic5 era. The biggest cutout holds the telephoto camera, the flash and an ARRI logo. Honor is carrying its partnership with the German cinema camera maker forward, and has named the specific tools coming with it: ARRI LogC3 capture, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 colour, and ARRI Looks colour presets.

That combination matters more than it sounds. LogC3 is the flat capture profile ARRI's own cinema cameras record in, and AWG3 is the colour space that goes with it. Footage shot that way is meant to be graded afterwards rather than watched straight off the phone, so this is aimed at people who edit their video, not at people who post it as-is.

Honor has also shown a Moss Green finish for the top model, and confirmed a front cutout that carries both the selfie camera and a 3D time-of-flight sensor.

The G500 teleconverter is the unusual part

Honor already sells a 200mm clip-on teleconverter for the Magic8 generation. The Magic9 adds a second, longer one:

• G200 — the shorter, more portable option, reaching roughly 200mm equivalent
• G500 — a new, larger lens reaching roughly 500mm equivalent for distant subjects

These are external accessories that attach over the phone's telephoto camera, not lenses built into the body. Honor has not said what either kit costs, whether they ship in the box, or whether they are sold outside China. On the Magic8 generation the teleconverter was a separately priced accessory with limited regional availability, so treat wide availability as unconfirmed for now.

What is still rumour

Plenty of the specs circulating today have not come from Honor. Reports point to a dual 200-megapixel arrangement — a 1/1.28-inch main sensor at f/1.57 and a 1/1.4-inch telephoto at f/2.6 — plus a 50MP ultrawide, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, a battery near 8,000mAh, and a roughly 6.8-inch 1.5K LTPO panel. A square 1:1 selfie sensor has also been claimed for the Pro model. None of that is officially confirmed, and Honor has not even said how many phones are in the series; a Magic9, Magic9 Pro and Magic9 Pro Max split is the common expectation, not a stated fact.

Where and when you can buy it

The September 28 event is a China launch, with pre-orders already open there. Honor has not announced international pricing or dates. Recent history is the best guide: the Magic8 series launched in China first and reached European and other global markets several months later, at higher prices, and with a narrower model range. If you are outside China, expect a wait rather than a same-week release.

One date worth putting next to it: Honor is unveiling MagicOS 11, its Android 17 skin, at its developer conference on September 15 — thirteen days before the phone. The Magic9 series is the obvious first device to ship with it.

Honor has been pushing hardware experiments hard this year, including a phone with a motorised gimbal camera. The 200MP telephoto claim, if it holds, would put the Magic9 in the same bracket as Oppo's triple 200MP Find X10 Pro Max, also due this month, and the launch lands in a crowded few weeks that already included Huawei's Mate XT 2 tri-fold.
