Final Fantasy Resonance Demo Is Out on PS5, Xbox, Switch and Steam, and Saves Carry Over

Square Enix put the free Final Fantasy Resonance demo on every platform the game is launching on, and it went live on 3 September. It covers the opening through the end of Chapter 1 — roughly three to five hours — and the save file you finish it with transfers straight into the full release on 22 October.

The demo is out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through both Steam and the Microsoft Store. There is no staggered rollout and no platform waiting a week for its turn.

What the Final Fantasy Resonance demo actually includes

You get the whole first chapter, not a walled-off vertical slice. That means the opening story beats set in the Kingdom of Grandshelt and the full turn-based battle system rather than a trimmed tutorial version of it. Square Enix and co-developer LANCARSE have pitched Resonance as an HD-2D turn-based RPG, and the demo is long enough to tell whether that combat holds up past the first few encounters.

Progress carries over. Square Enix has confirmed this on the Steam listing and in its PlayStation announcement, so the hours you put in now are not thrown away when the full game unlocks. That is the single most useful fact here, because a demo without carry-over is a trial and a demo with it is a head start.

Which platforms get it, and what you need free on the drive

Both Switch models are covered, which matters because the two run the game differently and the demo is the only way to check handheld performance before paying. The Steam page lists 15GB of available space for the full game, so the demo's footprint sits under that. Console storefronts show their own figures at download time, and they are not identical across PS5, Xbox and Switch.

Storage is worth checking first on Switch, where a Final Fantasy release can eat an entire internal drive. Sephiroth turned up, but not necessarily in the demo

A new trailer released alongside the demo revealed Sephiroth as a boss encounter in Resonance, with Square Enix saying players will be able to find and challenge him for a special reward. What the publisher has not said is whether he is reachable inside the Chapter 1 demo or only in the full game, and it has not described the reward. Treat the fight as confirmed for the game and unconfirmed for the demo until Square Enix says otherwise.

The full version is sold in a Standard and a Digital Deluxe edition. On the Steam listing served to us, Standard is priced at ₹3,499 and Digital Deluxe at ₹3,999; storefront pricing differs by region, so check your own store page rather than converting. Pre-orders across editions include the Magitek Airship and Squire starter pack, with early-purchase bonus items attached separately.

Worth downloading before 22 October?

If you already intend to buy it, yes — the carry-over makes it a free first chapter rather than a preview. If you are undecided, three to five hours is an unusually generous window to judge a turn-based RPG on. The obvious comparison is the recent Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter demo, which also carried saves forward on PS5, Switch and Steam.
