Kingdom Hearts 4 Release Date Set for Late 2027, With Coco as Its First Disney World

Square Enix has given Kingdom Hearts 4 a release window at last: the game is due in late 2027, and it arrives with the first Disney world anyone has actually seen in it. The Kingdom Hearts 4 release date reveal came during Disney's entertainment showcase at D23, alongside a new trailer running under a minute and a half that introduced the land of the dead from Disney and Pixar's Coco.

That is two pieces of information the series has been short on since the game was first announced. Until now, the only setting shown at any length was Quadratum, the modern-looking city Sora wakes up in, and there was no timing attached to the project at all.

Which platforms get the Kingdom Hearts 4 release

Square Enix is developing and publishing the game, and it is now listed for wishlisting across every current platform:

• PlayStation 5
• Xbox Series X|S
• Nintendo Switch 2
• PC, via Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC

There is no PS4, Xbox One or original Switch version on that list, and none has been mentioned. Wishlisting is open now on all six storefronts; pre-orders and pricing have not been announced, which is normal for a game still more than a year out. Nobody should read the wishlist listings as a pre-order window.

The Switch 2 inclusion is the notable one. Previous mainline Kingdom Hearts games reached Nintendo hardware only as cloud versions, which needed a constant connection and were never a like-for-like experience. A native listing alongside the other consoles suggests that is changing, though Square Enix has not detailed how the Switch 2 version differs, if at all. What the Coco world actually showed

Coco is the first Disney and Pixar property confirmed for the game, and the trailer spent most of its length there rather than teasing it. Miguel performs while Heartless appear around him, Sora fights alongside him in matching Day of the Dead face paint, and the sequence moves through Casa de la Cruz. Sora also picks up a Keyblade styled to match the world, continuing the series habit of reskinning his weapon per setting.

Héctor appears explaining that those who are forgotten by the living fade away in the afterlife — the emotional spine of the film, and a theme that sits unusually neatly against a series built around hearts, memory and characters who blink out of existence.

King Mickey, Donald and Goofy also turn up, shown searching for Sora rather than travelling with him. Published reports of the trailer additionally place Strelitzia and Sigurd, characters from the mobile entry Kingdom Hearts Union χ, in the footage. Square Enix has not confirmed how any of them factor into the story.

What has not been confirmed

Plenty. No exact release date beyond "late 2027", no price, no edition breakdown, and no other Disney worlds. Reports naming further worlds, returning cast members or a specific launch month are not backed by anything Square Enix or Disney has said on the record, and the series has a long history of leaks that turn out to be wishful reconstructions of old material.

Voice casting is the specific area to be careful with. Coverage of the showcase has attributed a returning film voice actor to the game, but the announcement itself did not lay out a Kingdom Hearts 4 cast, and Disney's showcase covered film and television projects in the same breath. Treat any named performer as unconfirmed until Square Enix says so.

The Disney+ anime is a separate project

Disney used the same showcase to announce an original animated Kingdom Hearts series for Disney+ and Disney Channel, described as inspired by the games rather than an adaptation of them. It has no premiere date, no episode count and no announced cast — the promotional material said only that it is coming soon.

It is not a tie-in to the game and should not be read as one. Square Enix's involvement in the show has not been spelled out either.

What to do until late 2027

A late-2027 window means at least fifteen months of waiting, and no reason to act on anything today beyond adding the game to a wishlist if you want a price alert.
